“I don’t think I’ve ever heard Black Sabbath”
Iron Man movie credits: am I a joke to you?
“Is this normal? For there just to be no lyrics for such a long time?” Yes. Yes it is. Welcome to the world of breakdowns and instrumentals
A lot of metal, despite popular belief, actually talks about important subjects. Societal, political, spiritual, any subject you can think of there’s probably a metal song about it. As a huge metalhead I love seeing people dipping their toes in the genre and coming in with an open mind and actually trying to understand it.
If you want some good bands with meaningful lyrics about political and societal issues check out bands like Metallica, Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, System of a Down, and Rage Against The Machine. If you want some dope drumming my go tos are: Metallica (again), Slayer and Avenged Sevenfold

LOVEBITES HOLYWAR IS A GOOD INTRODUCTION FOR WOMEN BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL WOMEN THAT SHRED AND SING WITH AN R AND B BACKGROUND SINGER. I AGREE AS A TRIBUTE TO HISTORY WAR PIGS IS A GREAT PLACE TO BEGIN. BTW, METAL IS STILL GOING VERY VERY STRONG IN JAPAN. THEY WORSHIP METAL FROM THE 70S, 80S AND 90S.

if someone thinks the carpenters are fast insane noise sounds i think they might have to graduate little by little to even be able to handle classic rock when they like van halen for example they might just be ready for metallica also some people can't stand the sight of the flags or christian crosses that you might see on a ffdp stage let alone a tribute to handicapped veterans

"Is this normal, for there to be no lyrics for such a long time?".
Yes. This is maybe one of the most defining characteristics of the "metal" genre: it is very focused on the music which is why purely instrumental passages are given significant weight and many "metal" singers use their voice as an instrument as much as a means to sing a song.
This is also why "metal" tracks are often longer than the average pop or rock song.

Almost always a bad idea to watch a video (even the "official" ones) to songs. They rarely have anything at all to do with the song and can confuse the message of the music. I see lots of people react to metal and they're so wrapped up in the video that they're really not paying any attention to the song. Just a thought.

However, the pandemic had me watching reaction vids from vocal coaches and I found out how much technique is involved, and while I still don't like a full scream song, I've come to enjoy songs that use it as emphasis, and I appreciate it when I see someone like Tatiana from Jinjer for example displaying insane control over her sound.

True but this is not what defines "metal". The backlash to Flower Power didn't wait for them, the Rolling Stones had it right out already in 1968 with Sympathy For The Devil, Street Fighting Man then Gimme Shelter or Midnight Rambler, and by 1969 the Stooges were taking all this to 11 and more. "Metal" is a purely musical genre, not a thematic one.

Mary, I only watch your movie recommendations, and I clicked on this. I LOVE how you immediately notice the cool drum work on the verses. I'm not a metal fan - ie: 1980s-present..... but I love 60s and 70s rock & roll, of which Black Sabbath totally is part of, and I always loved this song. This wasn't called heavy metal when it came out, it was just hard rock, which is the root of "metal". Really loved your sharp ears on that, and so I'm subscribing to this channel as well, just based on that split second. PS: I wish there wasn't video on this (which is decades after it was recorded), it's better just to listen without having visual distraction, other than the album cover, especially when it's from a totally different time period. The album cover for this song is great, and the only image needed.

I consider this a "Classic Metal" sub-genre. As with most genres there are good songs/artists and bad, and even 'bad' ones can reach a few rabid fans. It comes down to what you are looking for and what catches your ear. Classic Metal (Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen), Thrash Metal (Metallica, Megadeath, Pantera, Jinjer), Speed/Power Metal (Dragonforce), Symphonic Metal (Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica), Industrial Metal (Nine Inch Nails, Rammstein, Marilyn Manson), Alternative and Nu Metal (Alice in Chains, Tool, Godsmack, System of a Down, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Disturbed), Progressive Metal (Tool, A Perfect Circle, Dream Theater). You can slice and dice it so many ways, and no one will agree with the organization or if those bands would be considered 'metal', but there are some that were more popular than others.
I would recommend speaking with your friend more about these sub-genres to see if he/she has some thoughts on what is worth trying.
Not everything is scream-o or growling, although there are a few gems in those areas even.

This is a really classic song and near perfection of hard rock, early heavy metal song. The band are extremely talented and BTW, I loved the show Freaks and Geeks too. Black Sabbath gets a reputation for being satanic due to their dark music and band name, however, many of their lyrics are actually anti-satanic. They were originally a blues band and took them name from the marquee of a movie theater which was playing the 1960s horror movie of the same name.

Oh sweet Mary… You picked a great one to start your journey on. Hands down my favorite Sabbath song. Even though this was made back in 1970, it is still relevant today. Just for different reasons. Especially for you guys in AU. Crazy bonkers of overreach Batman!!! I really appreciate you leaving in and slowing down the clip of the factory worker taking off his mask as if he was fed up with being told what to do. Very relevant in today’s times. I also liked the scene in this video (which I thought was very deep) of the Big Gov man standing out and overseeing everyone beneath him. The shadow on the wall behind him from the statue… but the statue isn’t wearing a hat. So I see it as someone is watching the watcher. Someone else is pulling the strings behind the curtain.

"War Pigs" is from their 1970 album called "Paranoid". This was years before the term "Heavy Metal" existed as a music genre by name. Guitarist Toni Iommi said in a 1999 interview: "We always classed ourselves as a hard rock band. "Heavy Metal", I don't know where that came from".

This was written & recorded at a time when metal was just coming into being & defining itself. In early metal, instrumental virtuosity, with extended musical breaks; especially guitar solos, were commonplace. Also this was at a time when MTV & music videos didn't exist yet. So you might find yourself confused trying to connect the video with the song lyrics even if it the official video release. I loved your musical reaction. Hope you'll consider doing more. Especially in the classic metal category.

This is the kind of stuff I grew up with, really early metal like Black Sabbath. For an introduction, it's a great idea to start with the guys who came first and influenced everyone else. What I love about the first few Black Sabbath albums is that you can hear the building blocks of their style, lots of blues and even some English folk, that you don't pick up in anything later.
There's a lot that's quite accessible and shouldn't be intimidating for a newbie. Standards like Iron Maiden and Motorhead that everyone should know, Metallica are huge of course, Van Halen were just such a fun party band. I lean towards more melodic early bands like Blue Oyster Cult or Atomic Rooster... but dip your toe in and see what you like!

Always cool to see the next generation discover "my" sort of music. If you're interested in the origins of Hard Rock I'd like to suggest "Sunshine of your Love" by Cream (the live version in the Royal Albert Hall in 1968 is epic, featuring a 21 year old Eric Clapton and one of the first headbangers ever recorded).
Jimi Hendrix is also up that alley.

Basically Black Sabbath invented Heavy Metal as a genre. Growing up in Birmingham, UK, around lots of the heavy metal industries in the city, their music was compared to anvils and the sounds of industry, thus inventing the term for 'Heavy metal' as a genre. Often Sabbath and Motorhead are both credited with inventing the genre in slightly different ways.

3:48 that image is of Battersea power station in London (now an art gallery), here's it's used as an analogy, the poor are being used as fuel for the wars. Heavy Metal has so many sub genres, it's not all "screaming cannibalistic stuff" Heavy metal music deals with so many deep themes and differing stories.

Hey Mary, just throwing an idea out there for you: I've been watching a youtube reactor (another Aussie, in fact), and she's been reacting to all of The Beatles albums in order. It's been a really beautiful experience and it's also blown up her channel pretty fast! Since you're a "flowery girl" - and because you already demonstrated to me you have sharp ears for musical detail - I know I myself would LOVE to see you do those albums. Even (and especially!) if you already know and like The Beatles - if you haven't listened to the albums themselves, and in order, people will definitely love to see your reactions because the progression album to album is so clear, and the variety so great. And let's face it: every Beatles album is like a little "movie"! In fact, every Beatles SONG is like a little movie! Anyways, just an idea! Watching you react to ANY great rock and roll from the 60s and 70s (and before and after those decades), I'm all for that.

I’m not a big metal head. But Black Sabbath knocked her up. Metallica (from the 1980s) married her. I would recommend the song “Master of Puppets”, though technically it isn’t my favorite Metallica song, I think it is the best introduction to their music.

Black Sabbath was the original heavy metal (and often considered doom metal) band from England. Ozzy Osbourne and his family are pretty well known, as well as Sharon Osbourne and Kelly Osbourne. Ronnie James Dio joined the band after Ozzy left and originated the devil horns. One of the most popular hand gestures in the west, yet very few people know of it's origins coming form metal.

    Some other Sabbath recommendations:
    Black Sabbath (very gothic)
    Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
    Paranoid
Hand of Doom (about how heroin addiction kills)
Megalomania (my favorite, tho not a "hit" - it has a really cool vocal bit where Ozzy sings the last syllable of the first word, then the first syllable for several measures until it comes together for the full word, e.g., "Sez ob, sez ob, sez Obsessed")
    Sweet Leaf

Here's the thing about Metal music no one ever tells people starting out or even people who listen to it casually. There's so much! There's a guy who made a documentary series about it where he identified 26 different individual genres. Since that came out I know of at least one more that's come about you could add to the list. But that's only the starting point. Then you have bands that combine elements of those other ones or combine it with other genres entirely (I know of at least one who made a legit Jazz Metal song with Saxophone solos and everything). Then you have genres in different time periods or from different countries with their own spin on it. It can seem unbelievably intimidating at first but here's the thing. New to it or spent a lifetime listening to it everyone is still experiencing something they've never heard of for the first time that could be classified as Metal. It's a journey not a competition. It's expanding your horizons and experiencing something new and novel. That's what metal is really all about.
