Hello, I'm a HKer having grown up in Canada. I believe the level of racism really depends on the specific neighborhoods. I personally feel it's virtually impossible not to have any experience of discrimination. Keep in mind a lot of whites do feel superior. It's in their blood! Also, racism doesn't have to come in the form of verbal attacks. I have seen a lot of angry/weird looks myself mostly from some elderly... Anyhow, just carry on with life and don't let it bother you! BUT NEVER BACK DOWN WHEN BEING BULLIED!!
Never feel you're inferior to them. On the contrary, you're superior to them. If you belong to an ethnic group, chances are you're bilingual. If you're an immigrant like me, you would have been exposed to life and culture outside of your adopted country. The local whites mostly have not seen the outside world and are uni-lingual. Most hard working immigrants own their own home while a lot of the local whites are renting because they are not as financially astute as most immigrants and are unable to save up for the down payment.

I think the question should be turned around and ask the HK Chinese if they are racist to people of colour or to their own people as well as to people of lower education, lower income group and those from the Philippines who live in HK. They should answer truthfully.
Great video and something I deal with more sensitivity. As a BBC, I have the Hongkonger looks with the English sensibilities, so I think like a British person experiencing racism in the 70s and 80s, but something my children rarely see.
Being born and raised in UK during the 80s and 90s I personally experienced extreme racism throughout my childhood and teenage years. I was often physically attacked on a daily basis and hospitalized due to the colour of my skin in school , even certain teachers would too therefore my childhood was dark. I understand that back then when there were no internet the world was more closed off therefore foreigners like me and my family would be very protective of our own people, in the 60s my uncle would face serious racial problems as he would get pelted with rocks on the streets for no reason. But as time goes by and the world opens up with online media access and social media people are more wary of how to treat one and other. In 2019 I went back to UK to visit my family after leaving and living in Hong Kong since 2005 I realized a lot has changed and people were much more welcoming and friendly towards me, it made me really happy and something popped into my mind saying "I'M FINALLY HOME"
Wow, physical abuse and attack at school !! No wonder why my retired supervisor hated foreigners, expatriate so much ! He attended boarding primary school and studied up to university in the 60s , 70s. He was bullied by the locals. He never back t o the UK.
I went back to London for a leisurely visit a few years ago. Restaurant services were so greatly improved and waiters were so friendly. Quite a difference from how it used to be in the 80's and 90's. I finally figured out that most of the catering service jobs were taken up by Eastern Europeans.
@@jackkwok3030 Many Eastern Europeans are quite friendly towards Asians. Many Asian people (men and women) living in Eastern Europe have said they feel they're treated equally as other people
Why didn't you learn Kung Fu. When I encountered that I took up Kung Fu and did weight training to put on more muscles. At 5-11 and 175 who dared to bully me. My mom asked me once if I was ever bullied. I said no. Well, I was the bully! But I was Little Lee Flying Daggers, the famous character in Gu Loan's novels, only to help the meek and the weak(Chinese).
The thing is everywhere has racism. Hong Kong has racism from Hong Kong Chinese to Hong Kong Indians. While we should keep the conversation going, too much highlighting may have the opposite effect. It is similar to school bullying. They don't need a reason, they just do it because they wanted to do it. I just hope people don't take it too personal as trashes will always be trashes, we can do little about it, but we should treasure those who appreciate us as who we are.
As a Chinese American, I have encountered more discrimination in Europe than I ever have in the US. I was visiting London for the first time 10 years ago. The first night of my visit, I was assaulted while withdrawing money from an ATM in Piccadilly Circus. 3-4 young Brit men attacked me from behind, pummeling me in unison. I assumed it was a robbery, but realized it was a race based attack when they start yelling out “ Konichi wa” surmising my identity as Japanese. I yelled out “Get the f*ck off of me, I’m not Japanese.” Shocked by my response in American English, they backed off sheepishly. And said “ Sorry, mate. Are you alright”! ?! Racism can happen anywhere. Mostly subtle but unfortunately blatant and violent in some cases.
It happened to me a couple of times in the UK. The first time was the local youngsters calling us out rudely with F words, and the second time the kids threw bottles at night on the ground while staring at us. Not sure they were targeting Asians or any passerby. Never happened to me in Asia.
It happens occasionally in certain areas in u.k. You need to report to the local police right away , police will come to investigate and give those youngsters official confrontation , and also to take down their identity documents for police record . Don't hesitate to call police immediately . 0therwise , you will just tolerate violence , which may harmful to you and your family in future .
I went to a public school near Oxford for 4 years, but that was years ago, and I have moved to California since then. Racism in the UK was rife, but now there is some pathetic attempt to hide it under a cloak of political correctness.
I must be a most lucky person as I settled in London way back in 1991 and in all those many years I have never ever experienced discrimination from a native Brit. However, I have seen an ethnic minority school girl bullying another Chinese man who was minding his own business. This girl was in the wrong place as I did the same to her and her school friend laughed out loud at this nasty piece of work. Job done!
I got a Chinese friend who spent his high school time in the uk. He suffered from discrimination and bullying in the high school just because he didn’t like to chat with others, and probably he’s Chinese. He said that the kids who didn’t like to talk was often bullied in schools.
Thank you for this excellent production. I'm glad to hear everyone has very positive view towards life in UK. Don't trust too much in what reported by news media. They always exaggerate the problem.
I was attacked for countless times while out riding my bike with street kids shouting inaudible stuff at me, putting their arms out trying to scare me to get a chance of me losing control of my bike and fall and take the laugh out of that, while some other ones would mimic barking while they were driving in a car past me, the most extreme one actually threw small rocks at me in which one of those actually hit me while i was on my bike
@@Brownismyname I try to ignore them, but sometimes they are being outright outrageous and harmful that I couldn't just ignore, not that I've ever reported to police about any of the incidents, but it just keeps happening whenever I'm out, so now I grow myself a mustache to hopefully deter those street kids and become less of a target to be bullied with
@@91722854 i was being sarcastic. Those were clearly racism that you experienced. But if you fight back, the odds will be against you as they are the majority. Who knows if the cops will be on their side ? or the press ? Its just a reality when you are the minority.
I grew up in the uk , London to be precise . I got teased for doing things a little differently to other kids at school ( like taking rice and Chinese sausage to a field trip when everyone else had sandwiches ) but I was never bullied . I have experienced racial slurs here and there from ignorant individuals but I would never , ever say the UK on the whole is racist . That's simply not true , for me anyway .
I ever heard some local people says before Chinese tourists, "deportation !" even in Heathrow Airport , duty free shops !
Faye~
Very civilised guests you’ve got here. I live in the UK and I agree with them.
I like this video so much, it’s worth to share it! Gorgeous work, thanks Moving Socks💪❤️
I love this video, thank you Stevo and Faye ❤️❤️❤️
This is a very positive video, thank you so much guys!
I just hope people don't take it too personal as trashes will always be trashes, we can do little about it, but we should treasure those who appreciate us as who we are.
only england and america plus austrailia has more violence
Cannot agree more! Don’t ‘highlight’ this topic, please!
@@woklam342 That's an over generalisation, but I respect your view :)

Mostly subtle but unfortunately blatant and violent in some cases.
is true!
Love this video, your attitude to the community is very important. Don't think yourself as a foreigner, think yourself as a local resident.
Moving socks very nice interviews and informative
No matter where you choose to live, respect their lives and cultures and adapt yourselves to them.
Thank you Faye & Stevo
Well said! Faye and Steve are very positive.
Thank you for this excellent production. I'm glad to hear everyone has very positive view towards life in UK. Don't trust too much in what reported by news media. They always exaggerate the problem.
No they dont exaggerate
That also include problem in hk
I was attacked for countless times while out riding my bike with street kids shouting inaudible stuff at me, putting their arms out trying to scare me to get a chance of me losing control of my bike and fall and take the laugh out of that, while some other ones would mimic barking while they were driving in a car past me, the most extreme one actually threw small rocks at me in which one of those actually hit me while i was on my bike
Where were you? That sounds horrible!
according to the comments here, you should have a sense of humor as they are just joking with you !

You can't control what other people say or do . It's how you choose to respond to it.
yea I agree with you to a certain extent. Growing up in the UK, the racism here is simply bad. Altho not all definitely most of em white. The HKers just need to feel it fr themselves
Couldn’t agree more 👍
You'd have brought salty fish and rice for lunch and challenged the kids to share. You'd won some friends instantly 😀😀
@@georgeyeung8374 Thankfully we never had that in the house . LOL .
I wish I had taken home cooked dishes from my HK mum to school instead of horrible sandwiches 🤣
Really thank you so much for the message received.
Great effort in producing this film
Thanks for sharing and the encouragement
