In March 2019 I had to fly to MEL urgently from SFO due to a family member being ill. I literally booked the morning of the day of the flight. Business class was stupidly expensive, but I managed to get 20A in Premium Economy. The food and service was as I expected: outstanding. What was surprising was how comfortable the seat was. I haven't flown in Economy long haul very often in a long time, and I was expecting to arrive sore and tired: I was neither. I was perfectly refreshed and I did manage to sleep most of the way across the Pacific. I even drove the 100 miles to Northern Victoria, no problem.
I was suppose to do that as well. From Perth to Northern Victoria in March 2020 to see my dying aunt for the last time. Then the pandemic put an end to that. Last month I booked a scenic flight on the Dreamliner from Perth to Antarctica. Then I find out I have to do a mercy dash to Northern Victoria because my favorite cousin, the very aunt's son, has terminal cancer now and not long to go. Preying there will be nothing to stop me this time...
Thanks Harry. Lots of travel videos planned for 2018 so stay tuned. Yeah the whole Qantas team were awesome on that flight, really friendly and happy to help with my filming.
Hey Ryan, no way that's a coincidence! Hope you enjoyed your flight on the Dreamliner, it's a great aircraft hey? Were you in the Captain's seat when I was in the cockpit, if that was you I remember seeing you. Hope you enjoyed getting a look around the flight deck, they were a really friendly crew to let us do that. Travel safe mate, cheers, Stef 👍
Hey Tony, thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Glad you enjoyed that review. Hope you get a chance to fly the Qantas 787 at some point, it's a cool plane. Lots more travel and air travel reviews coming up in early 2018 so stay tuned. Thanks again, Stef 👍
Thank you so much from a Yank fan. I must say that all of you airline & travel Vloggers have my sincerest admiration and thanks for your dedication and talent in producing these most informative and entertaining videos. I don't think I could do so and therefore, appreciate them immensely.
Hey Paul, thanks for the comment, I really appreciate the feedback. Glad you're enjoying the videos. There's a few more air travel adventures in Asia to come soon, I hope you'll enjoy those too. Thanks again, Stef 👍
I am primarily a still photographer using Nikon SLRs. The creativity you videographers provide us with never ceases to amaze me and your editing is first rate. Please keep them coming!! I'll be waiting to see them as they hit YT.
Row 20 has an ottoman for your feet on long haul which will Velcro to the carpet. The seat really is fantastic and once you find the right position with the footrest it’s incredibly comfortable
That's good to know, they didn't get those out for the MEL-SYD domestic flights (not really worth it on a 1hr flight I suppose). But that makes row 20 even better in my mind. Do you have a photo or something you can tweet/post to me @stef747? I'd love to see.
You are one lucky guy to be allowed onto and film the flight deck. I would imagine it would take alot of training to learn all those switches etc. Thanks for the review mate, i will remember front row premium economy.
Thanks Spiro, the cabin and flight crew were really friendly about the whole thing. I think they were happy to show off the new plane! I’m very grateful they said yes when I asked. Cheers mate, Stef 👍
Thanks for this video. Going to Europe next September and tossing up between Business class with a cheaper airline, or premium economy with Qantas, either direct or single stop. QF9/10 premium economy is at the top of the list now. Cheers.
Great video, this is my third time watching it!! On the last flight thats the same seat that I am in when I fly LAX-MEL in two weeks. Its the last row of premium economy in that same seat.
Thanks FlightExpert96, I'm really glad you enjoyed that. It's a great aircraft, it's cool you're going to fly it in a few weeks time. Will you be posting a flight review of the new Dreamliner on your channel too? I look forward to seeing what you think 👍
That catering truck at the start, that's what I do, but in Brisbane. Good video mate but as I'm on holidays right now..... I'd rather the cirrus haha. Good eps.
Thanks Kompulsa, the window shades are really clever hey? The fact you can set your own dimmer amount is a great idea. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, cheers, Stef 👍
Thanks for the vid. Most reviews of Qantas 787 PE product are negative so I avoided it on our upcoming trip from BNE to LAX and booked us to go on a 747. Now Qantas in their wisdom cancelled that flight and moved us on a 787 from MEL to LAX which made me very nervous given the reviews. Kicker is we had reserved great seats on the 747 but now are scattered in the middle seats on the 787 without much hope of something better. Hopefully it won't be all bad based on your vid.
You probably dont care but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times you can watch all of the new movies on instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my girlfriend during the lockdown =)
Great vlog. I am thinking about flying premium economy to Santiago by the end of the year, but it will be flying B747, so the feature probably will be totally different being it's old aircraft. But I think it must be still better than flying couch.
Yeh, OK Stefan, the Qantas Dreamliner is fine, but as it now has taken the place of the A380 on flights to the US, the chances of getting an upgrade to business are far fewer as there are fewer business class seats. Three days to go for Qantas to contact me......fingers crossed. Essentially, you are right , PE makes a lot of sense on a 12/14 hour flight, unless you are a sardine! Cheers and thanks for an interesting vlog. O.Vandevelde
The Qantas crew were really friendly when I asked them. If you want to take a look next time you fly, I’d suggest ask the ground crew at the gate first so they’re prepared, then ask the cabin service manager if they can put a request into the flight crew. If they’re not too busy, and if their policies allow, your best chance would be after landing when the plane is shut down. Good luck!
Thanks for the tips, I was on an A320 (air nz) 3 weeks ago but the door was shut and the flight attendants were getting everyone out as fast as possible so I couldn’t ask :(
Great video, thanks. One quick question. When sitting on the back row, are you able to recline the seat to the same extent as the one in front of you? Cheers
PE Bulkhead row -- EXACTLY where I'd sit when I fly Quantas from Melbourne back to San Francisco in October. Is there that same footrest with the mesh and the calf rest in that first row? Thanks for confirming that for me Stefan. And those window darkening options? That's SU-WHEET! An option you don't get outside of long-haul Business Class on most carriers. This PE product seems on par with Air France's PE service on the A380 which is currently my favorite Great video. Cheers.
Yeah the dimming windows are good fun, I think I annoyed a few passengers turning mine on and off for a lot of the flight 😀So the footrest and mesh weren't in the front row from what I saw. But you get a little bit more legroom in the front row and nobody reclining into you which is why I preferred it. I haven't flown Air France's PE yet, I'll have to add that to the list. Thanks Ben 👍
Thanks for confirming about the footrest Stefan. Yes, I HEARTILY recommend Air France's PE product (esp. on the A380), it's AWESOME! Ok, so it will either be Row 20A or 23A (I am a window seat person also) on Quantas' 787 PE. Settled.
The crew can over-ride the window controls and will do so on some airlines. So if you are someone who enjoys looking out at any scenery that might be passing below then you could be disappointed. Airlines I've flown that do this are Air Canada and JAL but I've read of others such as United. I don't know what Qantas's policy will be.
Please note regardless of the sate you select and the month you select and indicates the Qantas 787 in the booking. When you select your seat any row in the front 20s or select any row in the 21s then these 2 rows are going to be blocked regardless the price your paying on premium. I have tried this as i had a play with it and i could see the seat live map on qantas website. The only selections one can make is anywhere on rows 22s and anywhere rows 23s so you pretty much have very limited to select by all means. This is entirely not good enough. (Qantas told me that the rows 20s and 21s can be requested closer to date or that closer to your travel date these seats will then be available) But my suggestion to this is.. I think its important to select your seat well in advance now and not at the final days before travel only because you could end up in a random seat between 22s and 23s instead. So if you want a window seat you have the selection of 22s and 23s if its available at the time of booking* But still this is unfair for these paying a (premium price) regardless the cheapest price or the most expensive price and yet you still get the 20s and 21s all blocked for a reason. And these are only re-open availability days before travel. So my thought on this is.. As much as i wanted to select a front window seat 20 it is impossible (Maybe design for these on Qantas memberships or something) But i would just select the back row as Stefan shows it's pretty good. If unless the curtain behind you is a distraction during sleep time. So im surprise that rows 20s and rows 21s are all blocked. How did i looked this up? Easy... you just have a play with it pretend your booking a date and time and select accept the next page and you end up going to the next page where it shows you a live interactive map on whats available. Again this is not good enough when you see very limited and yet all rows 20s and all rows 21s are all blocked. (Not taken) depending the date you selected but these are blocked for a reason and i don't simply no why. Qantas just say it is available days before travel. But my suggestion is... don't bother waiting because at the same time premium seating group is very limited and there are 28 seats only and they do filled up depending where your heading to. So organise your selection and be happy what you got. Though front row was what i wanted to select. But can't do anything about it and i sure would not bother waiting days before travel because the possibility in trying to select a front row seat may be very very limited specially (days before travel) due to the fact that the Premium seating group has only 28 seats and people travel a lot and or may be filled up quickly before you know it. Remember this is for (long haul international flights) So i don't no if its the same issue for domestic.
Hello from NZ, and more top class content! Qantas is very inconsistent with their in-flight experience I find. I flew Premium Economy from Hong Kong to Sydney last month on the 747, and then transferred over to Auckland on the A330. You'd be forgiven for thinking they're not the same cabin class!
Hello Nick, thanks for joining the channel and for your comment. You’re right there are variances between the same cabin class across different aircraft, that’s an important point. But the Dreamliner Premium Economy is very good. Am I right in thinking the 747 Premium Economy was a little dated?
You're quite right, it's similar to what I flew on with Air NZ in Premium in 06-08'. Qantas advertises they've got A380 cabin interiors on the 747, but it's obviously a very slow roll-out because it was clear it needed work desperately. The problem is you pay a premium economy fare, you expect that level of service. I flew to HK with Cathay a few weeks earlier in Premium and it's like night and day!
Great video! A couple of questions though.. 1) how tall are you? (Trying to compare how much room my partner will have as he is 6"3.) 2) are you able to select row 20 when you book your flights? Thank you!!
Hey mgreen311, thanks for watching and glad you found that useful. I'm 6"2 and yes you should be able to book row 20 in Premium Economy however some of those seats may be held on certain flights, you'd have to confirm with Qantas on that one.
I've traveled already on 787 American Airlane's Premium Economy and I can definitly say that it's worth it. Although, I must say the seats available at 787 by American Airlane are better than those Qantas shown by you, as they offer leg support and all the seat features are eletronic controlled.
Hey Wladner, that's great feedback thanks. I'm flying AA in a couple of months time and will definitely be shooting some videos onboard. I'll check out what you said, thanks for the tip. Cheers, Stef 👍
Another very enjoyable blog. I have only flown business or economy but now might have a look at premium econmy ( especially row 20 on the dreamliner) was there much of a price difference? Cheers Harry
Thanks Harry. The price difference appeared to be just over double the Economy price, but of course that's going to vary depending on flights and offers that Qantas may put out there. But if you're booking, definitely try and get that front row. Cheers, Stef 👍
Hey Rowan, if that's your dream and what you want to do as your career, then go for it! I can't think of a better way to spend your life than doing something you love and getting to travel at the same time. Good luck with your flight training mate.
The reason the windows take longer to go light than dark is because the electricity in the gel has be extracted extremely quickly but even with that electricity can arrive quicker than it can leave which is why you’re lights sometimes don’t turn on or come on and don’t instantly light up.
Also, on premium economy Brit Air you have a separate cabin with a separate WC. Other premium economies are separated by a curtain and you have to go down to the end of economy to use the loo. How is it on Quantas?
Interesting video Stef. Were you travelling for work or just as a comparison? Interesting window tinting (Did wonder if the cockpit was so busy they had installed the flap control on the bulkhead!) It maybe Australia but it looked like landing in British weather though :)
Thanks Tim, I booked those flights just to checkout the Premium Economy cabin. I wanted to compare it to Economy and when I saw a MEL-SYD-MEL flight I jumped on it. And Melbourne weather can be very similar to British weather sometimes, probably why I like it down here :) Cheers.
Hi Stefan. We are booked to fly in the Dreamliner from Melb. to LA in September, seating in row 23 right side. Trust my reward points upgrade to business comes off
Hey Stefan... apparently to use the Premium Economy Foot/Legrest... you're supposed to place both your legs into the net and the orange padding...is meant for your calf... coupled with the right recline and locked position of the legrest it's meant to give you a feeling of being cradled by the seat... based off what I read on google. Great video by the way!
Hey Kenneth, that’s really interesting to know thanks. I’ll give that a go next time. Glad you enjoyed that, thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Stef 👍
I usually book direct with the airline, so via the Qantas app for example. Sometime I’ll use SkyScanner to shop across airlines too, but usually end up booking direct.
no inflight Service on this flight? Ist unbelievable that QF has no first class cabin on this aircraft. now imagine a flight Perth to London ....a nightmare
Hey Claus, this was just a domestic flight for the 787 Dreamliner. The inflight service would be different on an International flight on this aircraft. But for long-haul the Premium Economy or Business Class would, in my opinion, both be comfortable options.
Cant see what all the fuss is about Stefan, British Airways European Business Class has much better seating (not) After watching your recent video, this is night and day mate, and this is Premium Economy. Qantas know what a great product is and deliver it well. On domestic and European routes BA are now a budget airline, a very bad one at that.
Hey Julio, I spoke to the ground crew before the flight and then asked the Cabin Service Manager once we'd touched down in Sydney. They were really friendly. I've been declined before, but I'd recommend simply asking the CSM once the plane has started emptying on the ground, and if the flight crew have time they may let you in too.
@@StefanDrury yeah, it's usually ok after the flight when all the passengers have left. During flight definately not anymore unless you're really lucky or know the flight crew of course.
I cannot stand the bulkhead seats, yes nobody is in front of you but there are some clear disadvantages. You cannot stretch all the way out, nor can you simply unfold the table in front of you. The foldaway screens are generally low quality (although these seem good) and a pain in the neck to adjust properly. You also need to fold away before take off and landing while everyone else gets to use their screens.
Hey thanks for letting me know :-) as we will be going Sydney to Auckland in December..... you have just given me piece of mind for my seat booking. Thanks heaps :-) Well we are going via Air NZ but they are such similar seats.
This was just a domestic hop from Melbourne to Sydney and back whilst they were testing the plane. There would be a regular catering option now it’s operating International.
In March 2019 I had to fly to MEL urgently from SFO due to a family member being ill. I literally booked the morning of the day of the flight. I’m dewing a 15 hour flight from Sydney in qantas premium economy on qantas thanks for the review
Great Video! Nice lil humor I see here and there! Video quality and editing is really good too!
Thanks Dhananjay, I'm glad you enjoyed that. Thanks for being a part of the channel, cheers, Stef 👍
Best premium economy review video on the entire internet, hands down 👌🏼
You did great editing work on the cockpit tour. Very fascinating. Liked and subscribed.
Awesome video mate! Keep them coming. The Customer Service Manager looks like a great person!
Thanks Harry. Lots of travel videos planned for 2018 so stay tuned. Yeah the whole Qantas team were awesome on that flight, really friendly and happy to help with my filming.
You’d expect that from them all though! They all must be loving the change from the A380...
I'm flying from Europe to Melbourne on Qantas premium economy next year. 3 flights on the B787 and one on the A380 with the new layout.
Nice video, beautiful cockpit! love it!
Thanks Josh, yeah it's a pretty cool office hey? ✈👍
can't believe it!!!!! I was on both flights too!! and i also got a look in the cockpit and saw you
Hey Ryan, no way that's a coincidence! Travel safe mate, cheers, Stef 👍
i was in the captain's seat-so we have met before, and you can see my grey jacket as you walk past 11a and 11k
That’s awesome. Hope you enjoyed your trip.
Sorry for the late reply, I really enjoyed my flight
Stefan! Great review! I've never actually flown with Qantas before or the Dreamliner in fact. Can't wait to see more next year!

Stefan Drury unfortunately not, but if you fly t again while on domestic just ask the crew as you get off, they’re stored in the overhead lockers
Very informative review regarding the seat selections. Thanks!
Thanks for this video. Going to Europe next September and tossing up between Business class with a cheaper airline, or premium economy with Qantas, either direct or single stop. QF9/10 premium economy is at the top of the list now. Cheers.
Thanks Carsten, yeah obviously do your cost comparisons, but in terms of premium economy this is a good option on Qantas. Have a good trip mate.
Good eps.
Haha thanks Dan, I promise there's some more Cirrus action coming very soon... Cheers mate 👍
Genius window design, and a great video!
Thanks Kompulsa, the window shades are really clever hey? The fact you can set your own dimmer amount is a great idea. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, cheers, Stef 👍
Stefan Drury Yes. 😃 I hope to see that technology in building windows soon
I wonder if when a passenger dim the window.. Can people from outside can actually see you from the window view ? Take note of that :)
Can’t wait for new 787 route opportunitys
Thanks for the vid. Most reviews of Qantas 787 PE product are negative so I avoided it on our upcoming trip from BNE to LAX and booked us to go on a 747.

I can't believe you didn't ask the pilot where the parachute deploy handle is? Opportunity lost! - Mike Costello.
Haha, I’ll remember to do that next time!
You probably dont care but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times you can watch all of the new movies on instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my girlfriend during the lockdown =)
@Jad Scott Yup, have been using Instaflixxer for years myself :)
Great vlog. I am thinking about flying premium economy to Santiago by the end of the year, but it will be flying B747, so the feature probably will be totally different being it's old aircraft. But I think it must be still better than flying couch.
Beautiful Cockpit
Would have liked to see how restrictive it felt to have the seat in front of you fully reclined.
Yeh, OK Stefan, the Qantas Dreamliner is fine, but as it now has taken the place of the A380 on flights to the US, the chances of getting an upgrade to business are far fewer as there are fewer business class seats. Thanks for watching Otto, glad you found that useful.
Thanks for the review! I'm wondering whether the bulkhead seat (row 20) has a footrest like the last row (row 23)?
Great vid mate cheers
Thanks Camero_11 👍
Nice wish I could see the cockpit sometime
The Qantas crew were really friendly when I asked them.
Settled.

Thanks Mick, welcome to the channel. Really glad you're enjoying the videos. Cheers, Stef 👍
great vid I am going on v australia adelaide to brisbane today
Thanks Seb, have a great flight to Adelaide ✈️👍
Rumour has it there is less leg room on the new premium economy product compared to the current on the A380 would you agree? Nice video
Great I liked and subscribed
Thanks Flightsimmer101, welcome to the channel 👍
Great video! A couple of questions though.. 1) how tall are you? (Trying to compare how much room my partner will have as he is 6"3.)
2) are you able to select row 20 when you book your flights?
1:47 not sure why but my tired eyes thought that was Ash Barty in the back there 😂😂
Another very enjoyable blog.
Stefan i was interested of what the life of a pilot is like as i want to be one when im older
2-3-2 on-board 789 is more than generous for W.
Also, on premium economy Brit Air you have a separate cabin with a separate WC. Other premium economies are separated by a curtain and you have to go down to the end of economy to use the loo. How is it on Quantas?
On the Qantas 787 premium economy passengers share the two toilets at the rear of the main business class cabin.
Excellent Thank you
You're welcome, thank you for watching 👍
Does row 23 actually recline with the wall there? Booked this for bris to la but now having second thoughts
Hi Stefan. We are booked to fly in the Dreamliner from Melb. to LA in September, seating in row 23 right side. Trust my reward points upgrade to business comes off
Have a great flight Otto and good luck with the upgrade request.
Is there any restriction to the seats total reclining angle on row 23 due to the bulkhead?
Hey Stefan... apparently to use the Premium Economy Foot/Legrest... you're supposed to place both your legs into the net and the orange padding...is meant for your calf... coupled with the right recline and locked position of the legrest it's meant to give you a feeling of being cradled by the seat... based off what I read on google. Great video by the way!
Hey Kenneth, that’s really interesting to know thanks. I’ll give that a go next time. Glad you enjoyed that, thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Stef 👍
th-cam.com/video/82AP0-sOZrg/w-d-xo.html
Start at 11m40s...for the Y+ legrest usage...
Is there a USB charging point in front row premium eco of 787?
Good dedication just to fly there and fly back just for a review.
Thanks den525, I was excited to check out the new aircraft. I think in my heart I'm just a 16 year old boy who still loves planes!
Hey Stef. Do you book all your flights through Qantas or outside companies?
I usually book direct with the airline, so via the Qantas app for example. Sometime I’ll use SkyScanner to shop across airlines too, but usually end up booking direct.
Did the headphones at 2:03 come with the seat?
Hey Jesse, yep those came with the seat.
no inflight Service on this flight? Ist unbelievable that QF has no first class cabin on this aircraft. now imagine a flight Perth to London ....a nightmare
Hey Claus, this was just a domestic flight for the 787 Dreamliner. The inflight service would be different on an International flight on this aircraft. But for long-haul the Premium Economy or Business Class would, in my opinion, both be comfortable options.
Cant see what all the fuss is about Stefan, British Airways European Business Class has much better seating (not)
After watching your recent video, this is night and day mate, and this is Premium Economy. Qantas know what a great product is and deliver it well. On domestic and European routes BA are now a budget airline, a very bad one at that.
Row E on premium economy has a wider seat.
Howd you get on the flight deck?
Hey Julio, I spoke to the ground crew before the flight and then asked the Cabin Service Manager once we'd touched down in Sydney. They were really friendly. I've been declined before, but I'd recommend simply asking the CSM once the plane has started emptying on the ground, and if the flight crew have time they may let you in too.
@@StefanDrury yeah, it's usually ok after the flight when all the passengers have left. During flight definately not anymore unless you're really lucky or know the flight crew of course.
Ah good ol' Melbourne Tullamarine.
Why premium economy section is always so small (just 4 rows and view obstructed by wing)?
Generally an economic thing. Most people don't want to pay extra to sit in PE, and are content to pay less and squeeze into economy out back.
There are more business class seats than premium economy. IMO pricing of PE is wrong.
Deal breaker since I did not see any leg rest. Foot rest isn't enough.
Did the back seat recline ok?
Hey Suzanne, yes I put it as far back as it would go and it seemed to recline a good way back.
Hey thanks for letting me know :-) as we will be going Sydney to Auckland in December..... you have just given me piece of mind for my seat booking. Thanks heaps :-) Well we are going via Air NZ but they are such similar seats.
1:45 i'd like to imagine Stefan awkwardly taking his camera back out
did you get breakfast and lunch? business class did!!
Hey Ryan, just a small snack because it was just a domestic flight. But the snack was good.
I got a hot breakfast and for lunch, i had ravioli (i probably shouldnt have eaten breakfast in the lounge
why would qantas fly a long haul plane on such a short flight
They were testing procedures and systems and showcasing the aircraft on a few shorter domestic legs. It doesn’t fly these now.
I'm Australian
Me too!
Nice review, however I do hope that you don't put your feet on the bulkhead. It's tacky.
where are u from where to where
Hey Kevin, this was just a domestic test flight for Qantas. So this was from Melbourne - Sydney - Melbourne.
thanks
No catering?
This was just a domestic hop from Melbourne to Sydney and back whilst they were testing the plane. There would be a regular catering option now it’s operating International.
oh yeah in business class
Problem with front row is the idiots that cross in front of you
i pratheep anumat ok
you can see the wall dirty where some people have put their dirty great big hoofers to rest lol
