      Agreed. For 8 years from 2007-2015 Serena hired a full time male hitting partner called Aleksandar 'Sascha' Bajin. His career high ATP ranking during his own playing career was 1149. And of course he could beat her and handle her serve way better than the any of her opponents on the WTA tour. It would have made no sense for her to hire a hitting partner than couldn't beat her.
      During her career the legendary Chris Evert won 90% of her professional matches and reached the semi-finals or better at 52 out of the 56 grand slams that she entered. But she couldn't beat her brother John who 'only' played collegiate level tennis in the US.

      "It's been fascinating to watch," Federer told Gay. "She had a totally different upbringing - I came up through Switzerland with the federation, she did it with her dad and her sister.
      It's an amazing story unto itself - and then she became one of the greatest, if not the greatest tennis player of all time."
      Gay asked Federer whether he meant the greatest player ever or the greatest woman ever, and Federer reaffirmed his stance.

I'm sorry, for centuries humanity has gotten away with being plain outright rude and discriminatory to people, especially those with less power. We have however grown up slowly over the last four years and we are going to keep marching towards a more positive future. People like Trump are stuck in the past - he's 70 years old, (most 70 year olds are from another era). The next four years maybe eight are short steps backwards but we're going to keep going forward towards a more respectful world. Don't be scared, its much nicer than whatever world you seem to prefer. You do have to face up to and accept your discriminatory views - NOW THAT'S THE HARD WORK THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE TOO SCARED/UNEQUIPPED TO UNDERTAKE.

      The reality is that many people make provocative statements saying they are not being PC simply to either intentionally rile up people (they find amusement in seeing others suffer), to hurt them or to strengthen their own position of power - these people are not committed to finding the truth. The truth is not easy to determine when everyone brings a different point of view, base understanding of situation, context etc. Being compassionate, considerate and understanding towards each other however can give us a much better getting to whatever truth we can find. People respond to kindness and being respected, the reality some people just don't respect certain types of people (because of their race, gender, country, height, skin color, achievements, etc). These are the people that really harming society.

    Another event dubbed a "Battle of the Sexes" took place during the 1998 Australian Open between Karsten Braasch and the Williams sisters.
    Venus and Serena Williams had claimed that they could beat any male player ranked outside the world's top 200, so Braasch, then ranked 203rd, challenged them both.
    Braasch was described by one journalist as "a man whose training regime centered around a pack of cigarettes and more than a couple of bottles of ice cold lager".
    The matches took place on court number 12 in Melbourne Park, after Braasch had finished a round of golf and two shandies.
    He first took on Serena and after leading 5-0, beat her 6-1. Venus then walked on court and again Braasch was victorious, this time winning 6-2.
    Braasch said afterwards, "500 and above, no chance".
    He added that he had played like someone ranked 600th in order to keep the game "fun" and that the big difference was that men can chase down shots much easier and put spin on the ball that female players could not handle.
    The Williams sisters adjusted their claim to beating men outside the top 350.

The coach's point was that you could not practice and learn to play like McEnroe. His playing style was always about raw talent: he was born with the ability to play like that. Cheeze Pizza Literally every woman and ordinary feminist I know agreed with him. So did twitter feminists like Penny White and Magdalen Burns and Meagan Murphy, as did TH-cam ones like MarinaShutUp and Laci Green and Christina Hoff Sommers. What feminists do you know of to have disagreed with him? Even the women of The View mostly agreed with him. 2 of them just weren't knowledgeable about how high a 700 ranking actually would be for a woman, but even those two acknowledged biological differences giving males a physical edge. You males insulting women and feminists just seem insistent on being upset and having an excuse to spout misogyny. Look at how insulting and aggressive with their hatred of women the commenters here are being basically in very emotional response to strawmen arguments as if the official coalition of feminists said, "women are literally as physically strong as men." Pathetic and ironic how much quicker to responding irrationally and emotionally you guys are. Everything isn't a battle of the sexes.

      Whoa there. If you took my comment as offensive forgive me. But I'm just saying that I didn't see the "most feminists" you were talking about. And I don't think there is a single woman that thinks men and women are physically equal. What I'm saying they're disagreeing with is the 700 ranking.
      I'm tired of all these people that take little things liberals say and make it seem as if they're complete twats. Don't fall into the same category and put every person who comments something in opposition to your statement in the same pool.

      *TL;DR below*
      I think what he said was perfectly innocent and ironically I think part of it is that women's pro tennis in the past hasn't been taken as seriously _because_ of the sexism people are accusing him of. Fewer girls would get seriously into the sport because it was seen as a less viable career. There was less access to the best trainers, talent spotters weren't on the look out as much for girls, more difficult to secure high paying sponsorship deals, etc.
      *TL;DR*: It makes perfect sense that men would dominate the top of the "best of all time" lists, there haven't been as many opportunities for women to become pros.

      No, I didn't say that at all. Of course she's amazing and the best at what she does. The fact that she was pregnant and winning GS just proves how incredible she is.
      I don't think John shoud have mention that "700" line, but his point that Serena wouldn't be able to be number one playing constantly with men, is valid.
      It's just a different game for men and women, just like football, swimming, volleyball, etc. Men in tennis play faster, more aggressively and for a longer period of time. Of course that doesn't mean everything, Roger Federer is not the fastest or the strongest or has the biggest physicality of the players, yet he's still the best. But in average the game is very different for men and women.
      I see no point in comparing them, that's what John should've said.
      Serena is the best in women's tennis.
      Roger is the best in men's tennis.
      Period.

    McEnroe being generous and truthful, calling Serena the greatest ever female tennis player. But it's obvious she wouldn't stand a chance in men's tennis and that's not sexist that's pointing the obvious biological differences.
    For evidence she and her elder sister Venus had challenged to beat any man outside 200th the rank and we know how that turned out.

  • @sternelvis
    @sternelvis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +382

    We know she can't beat a player ranked 203rd in the world, remember when Venus and Serena Williams had claimed that they could beat any male player ranked outside the world's top 200, so Karsten Braasch, then ranked 203rd, challenged them both. He added that he had played like someone ranked 600th in order to keep the game "fun". Braasch said the big difference was that men can chase down shots much easier, and that men put spin on the ball that the women can't handle. The Williams sisters adjusted their claim to beating men outside the top 350.

    McEnroe was being generous when he said she would be ranked 700 in the world. In reality she would be outside the top 1,000. Even college level players would have no trouble returning her serve. On top of that she would be one of the slowest players on the men's tour. It's not chauvinist to say that men on average are much faster and have more muscle than women. Even her height would be a tremendous disadvantage on the men's tour. But hey, if she wants to prove all the naysayers wrong, she can play a match against someone ranked 500, but she won't because she knows she would lose.

      Let me put this way Serena will never qualified in Europe for a future. If she goes to easy ones ....Syria or India she could definitely pick top 2000 in the world. But in Europe no way she could compete. Different game.

    • @tennisdude52278
      @tennisdude52278 7 ปีที่แล้ว +87

      I'm an amateur player. I was ranked number 3 in the USTA Middlestates rankings and I'm pretty sure even I would have no trouble returning her serve once I got used to her spin. I just can't fathom how an opinion like this is tantamount to sexism in some people's minds.

    • @jaquinhamdan3943
      @jaquinhamdan3943 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Very generous. If Serena trie to qualified in Europe for any future she probably lose 6/0 6/01 in very match. If she played in central america, africa, Mexico were tennis is having troubles as a professional sport a pretty sure she wil pick a few points. That will put her top 2000 in the world. You can t compare women with men.

      Players outside the top 1000 serve the ball about 10 mph slower than Williams. They'd never be able to return her serve.

      Men and Women play tennis extremely differently (like they play most sports differently).
      The trick in tennis is that men offer much more upper body strength whereas women use their whole bodies to put the force into the ball (it's also why female tennis players have AMAZING and strong legs!)
      So what does this mean on the court? Well, it means that a man can deliver an extremely high velocity return...WHILE RUNNING. Women need to be planted in order to deliver the same or similar force because they use the force of their entire bodies on the return.
      SW is the most excellent female tennis player that ever lived and she does not play like a man...in other words I'm saying she plants when she delivers (at high velocity). Top 500 men can deliver the same velocity whilst running across the court.
      It's quite simple, really, and takes nothing away from the athleticism of either gender; unless you actually think the genders are at war, which is exceptionally silly.

  • @spietroify

    The key is that he didn't say what he did at first. He gave her a great compliment, and it wasn't until later when the NPR reporter asked "why qualify it" where he was pressured to explain himself. If he had just, out of nowhere, come out and said that Serena Williams would be ranked 700th as a man, then, even though that's roughly true, I would agree that's a little douchy and disrespectful. But that's not what happened! He was pressured by an ideologue into explaining why she isn't the best tennis player in the world, man or women. It's so depressing and frightening that otherwise smart people descend to single digit IQs as soon as the subject turns to race, gender, sexuality etc.

    3:15 I know he's half joking, but this moment right here kind of shows the difference between someone like Colbert v.s Mcenroe. Colbert seems to think you should just follow the mainstream cultural opinion and if people seem upset you should placate them, because that's more important than values and principles. That's how things like the Nazi party rise up.
