Until the Indianapolis 500 began be televised live, it was a Memorial Day weekend tradition in my family (and millions of other families around the country) to listen to the race live on radio in the afternoon, then watch the videotape of the race on TV that evening.
I think I listened to this "Indianapolis 500" earlier...maybe when it was put on TH-cam. This is great info for the fans and the new guys and gals in the field of sports broadcasting. In this whole special...none who did the broadcasting of the Indy 500 on radio, let alone TV runnings via ABC's "Wide World of Sports" guys better than the late Sid Collins. He was a "master" like the best play by play fellows who do the other sports. Donald Davidson...now there's a man who has given the facts about Indy 500 racing like none other. May he live to be 150!
Sid Collins was awesome and he introduced me to the Indy 500 in 1970 when I was 5. He did not however coin the phrase "Greatest Spectacle In Racing." A young lady working for WIBC named Alice Greene is the brainchild behind that phrase.

I was 10 in 1964. Sid gave a eulogy every racer wants on their head stone. Tears in my eyes now!
Thank you for posting this! This is awesome!!
RIP Bob Jenkins and Sid Collins.

Agreed! And if Mr. Donald Davidson lives to live only to 149, may his obit read that he ran out of fuel in turn 4 and coasted across the finish line.
RIP Bob Jenkins.
