My most vivid memories of the IMS construction project came during the 1999 500 and 400. Not only had the top four floors of the old Master Control Tower been removed, but they had also removed the back of the tower, which included the stairs to get into the tower. We had to enter using some scaffolding placed on the south end of the tower and go through a hole on the second floor where the old pylon controls had been. It was a little precarious lugging broadcast equipment to our post during practice and qualifications up that scaffolding. It was well worth it. The MCT was really falling apart by 1999. It was all glass with no air conditioning and occasionally when you tried to open a window the pane of glass would fall out. The new Media Center was state of the art and is still an excellent place to watch, but I do miss the "closeness", for lack of a better term, of watching practice and quals from that rickety old sweatbox.
Im an old man. In the 60's & early 70's we were lucky to see 2 races a year on tv. One race that was so entrenched in our DNA & eagerly waited for. The most attractive ( for me) part of this once a year event was this. It was a run what ya brung world welcome event & nobody knew WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN!!! It promoted free thinking. It was a glorious time to be witness to the genius of the day. The day you were given the choice between Chevy or Honda only was the day The Indy 500 died, for me. It has lost the most precious ingredients.
What you say is true, the old Indy 500 was a great event. However, IndyCar was going away because of the cost of innovation had become too great. Roger Penske had shown that with a fat bankroll it was a race for fourth place. Tony George wanted to go back to the "old days" where anyone could compete on an equal footing. The Meyer-Drake (aka Offy) engine was an off the shelf item available to all competitors. The roadster chassis was an open book. For most of the '50's and early '60's you had 33 cars with the same engine, the same basic chassis. Cars were able to compete for years. Calhoun, (#98) the car Parnelli Jones drove to victory in 1963 was driven for 3 years in a row. A year before and the year after his 1963 win. One car, with two different drivers won twice in succession. Mauri Rose won twice in the same car and Bill Holland, his teammate won the following year in a twin of that car. Let me add here that I see the 500 on TV after the event, I see it live and in person. I was 16 before I had to pay to get in to the race and that was because I wanted to sit in line the night before on 16th street. I had already witnessed 6 races at that point, yes I went to the race at 10 years old. I went to qualifications for the first time, with my father, at the age of 3.

The narrator suggests that the story about how the Pagoda first came about, is unknown history. WRONG. We know exactly what the background story is about how the Pagoda came to be. That's a Fisher idea.
To Hell with F-1! They thought Indy was a joke! They laughed in the Hulman's Faces. They even boycotted the F-1 race. Now! Penske owns the damn thing! Shawn
F1 did not boycott it, it’s just that they got an order from their tire company to not race in this track since the tires aren’t safe for the oval. They said that there’s no guarantee at all that drivers won’t be severely hurt or killed. That’s the reason for the last race at Indy. The drivers and the FIA all wanted to race but weren’t allowed due to safety reasons.
Too bad they lost money doing this and Tony George was kicked out of running INDYCAR and bring the IMS president. Thank god Tony George isn’t in charge of INDY anymore.
Rob Mush. That was a MUSH of an effort on your part. Are you sure that Tony George was kicked out of running INDYCAR? If your assertion is correct, who was it then, that would have kicked Tony George out of running IndyCar. Are you sure that Tony George was kicked out of being IMS President? Are you sure that Tony George isn't in charge of Indy anymore? Rob, you seem to have a real soft spot in your heart for Tony George. And when you post your opinions or prejudices on the internet as if they were fact, you blatantly expose the hatred you have accumulated in that soft spot in your heart, that you choose to dump on Tony George. Rob, Tony George deserves your respect and admiration. I do hope your eyes will open some day and lead you to the conclusion that you really have no clue what your are talking about when it comes to the operation and control of the property known as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That is a Hulman company asset. Who is the #1 person at The Hulman Company? That would be the Chairman of the Board. That is your kingpin at the top of the food chain. That person is Anton Hulman George. That is Tony Hulman Jr's hand picked successor to guide the Indianapolis Motor Speedway into the 21st century, and Anton Hulman George is the man who has made that track what it is today. Every piece of glass on the front stretch is a Tony George capital improvement. The face of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Today belongs to the sculpter, Anton Hulman George.
All speeds are done in KPh/Meters not the US standard MPH/feet. If this were a Grand Prix documentary the metric measurements would be accepted. This is the greatest race in the world and it is in the UNITED STATES where we use standard measurements NOT METRIC.
Give it time…Penske will want it to be improved and has way more bucks than the George family did. Tony would have done more, but his sisters wanted to sell the place as soon as their mom finally passed away, so he didn’t have a chance. Not defending him, he wrecked the sport and it almost died, but he was opposed at every turn when trying to spend on the place.
I wish f1 still raced at Indy for the US Grand Prix

The pagoda is excellent, still looks like it was built yesterday, tony Georges only real accomplishment after he fell off that turnip truck.
Great story... if I were that developer, the bill for the construction would have been tripled
Awesome racing facility. I have attended the Indy 500 years ago. 🏁🏎
What years did you attend the Indy500?
I attended the race in 1995 & 2001. I went to see the race but ended up people watching and admiring the atmosphere. It's a race and more! 🏁🏎
Yes! You got it Ray! Lol
We walked and walked. Lol We parked in a neighborhood at 38th & Moller and walked to and from IMS. 😰😰
Jeff Gordon won the first Brickyard 400 in 1994 and won 4 more

Been to f1 monaco, nascar daytona 24, isle of men, 24 lemans and lots of other races, nothing comes close to Indy500
Nascar and F1 should of never been allowed to race there, now its just any other track.
that's great, thanks stefmeister! you have the nat geo documentary about CART?
Yeah believe it or not Nat geo guy, F1 and Nascar wasn't the mid nineties announcement that really pissed off IndyCar fans.
To Hell with F-1! They thought Indy was a joke! They laughed in the Hulman's Faces. They even boycotted the F-1 race. Now! Penske owns the damn thing! Shawn
Lets hope he doesn’t GLAMM it up too much and destroy a lot of the HISTORIC feel that is still kind of present...

Rob Mush, that was a serious bowl of mush you dished out. Exactly who kicked Tony George out of running IndyCar and being the IMS President?

Why does someone go on the WORLD wide web and prove to everyone how clueless they are? Very entertaining though. Please, Rob Mush, tell us more! LMAO!

While historic, the Venue is an absolute Shithole for the Paying Public
Do you have any idea what it would cost to renovate that entire place at one time?
Give it time…Penske will want it to be improved and has way more bucks than the George family did.
