  • If you’re a young worker in the hospitality industry, especially if you’re new to the industry, it may feel intimidating to raise questions about safety in the workplace. But it’s important to listen to your gut and speak up if you are unclear about any kitchen or restaurant safety procedures, or if you spot safety hazards in the restaurant that need addressing.
It’s your employer’s responsibility to provide adequate health and safety training to employees, and to ensure occupational health and safety regulations for the food and beverage industry are followed. But you have a role to play too. If you get a gut feeling that something isn’t safe, or don’t feel like you know how to do your job safely, listen to your instincts and talk to your manager or supervisor about it. It could save your life or the life of your co-worker.
Speaking up about your concerns shows that you respect your work and the health and safety of others. Make sure you know who to talk to and how to ask for the appropriate training when it comes to safety in restaurants.
Some quick facts about young workers in hospitality:
Did you know that over 71,000 young workers are involved in the hospitality industry, including food and beverage, kitchens, and restaurants across British Columbia? About 30 percent of injuries in the hospitality industry in B.C. involve young workers, with slips, trips, and falls, being cut or hit, and burns being the main causes of injury.
WorkSafeBC’s #ListenToYourGut campaign has been developed to increase awareness around health and safety for wait staff and other young workers in hospitality and other industries. Know your rights and understand the role you play when it comes to health and safety at work.
