- I waited the whole concert to capture this ... and I was not disappointed. Working Man is the kind of song that reminds me so much of my father's arduous life (the other like it is the song Factory) ... and the choir and Shane McLeod's amazing voice add so much to the song. It's hard not to get a lump in your throat when hearing this.
I shot this on the Panasonic ZS3 (TZ7), which is a compact camera with a fairly long zoom.
I mastered this in Sony Movie Studio and cleaned up the audio as best as I could, considering that it was recorded from far stage left in the first row I believe.
This song always makes me cry…..how these brave men worked a lifetime in the mines I don’t know.
I have to say that the end of the song does that too me too...

These are all actual mine workers who make this magic on stage, and I had the rare privilege of seeing one of their concerts. By the end of this song I was totally in tears. They are just amazing. They tell of a way of life that is back-breaking, but still, a necessity, and they all have a quiet pride about them when they perform and tell their stories, both funny and heartfelt. They make me so very proud to be Nova Scotian.
How I miss Rita McNeil with her yearly beautiful Christmas concerts, She was one truly amazing woman who had an angelic voice. RIP Rita, may your concerts be as glorius in heaven as they were when you were here on Earth

I got to love and appreciate Rita when we lived 7 miles from the Quebec border in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. We saw her show on Canadian broadcasting and watched it religiously every week. When we did our Cape Breton trip in 2009 we stopped by the teahouse and what fun. One of those experiences you never forget.
I'm full of tears right now, listening to this great song. AMAZING!!!!!!! Rita, may you REST IN PEACE.

Saw Rita in concert 3X in contact. She was totally awesome...a wonderful lady. I read her biography, a definite must if you are a fan. She went through alot hardship but came out one the other side of it. She was a spectacular woman that is missed.

In the late 90's she played the Q.E. in Vancouver, I was lucky enough to see her live, she sang this song with the full entourage of miners ... it was the most profound experience I've ever had.

Thank you Rita, no one in the world could sing that song better than you! My father spent all his life working in the mines{#20 & 26}. I went to work with him in #26 and than a bad thing happened{in a coal mine?... go figure!}

I seen Rita with the Men Of The Deeps in concert numerous times. Video can't capture the fine hair raising goose bumps emotional experience it was everytime. Here you see the very miners she wrote the song for and about. She said the song was thought up written and done in her mind in 10 minuted while she "was miles under the Atlantic Ocean in danked miing tunnels" on a guided mine tour. In from Springhill NS another big mining town where many men died. There is a cultre born in us from these mining towns that is uniquely Canadian Maritime. It's what I believe makes me oddly strange to those born here on.upper Canada. Many have tried to beat it out if me. All have failed. It's my blood.

Felt so sorry for her listening to this, what on earth has happened to her voice? I loved her singing this when it first came out and still love it on here, it's one of my favourites but as a recording, not sung live. Poor Rita, I really thought she sounded dreadful on this and felt so sorry for her for even attempting it but of course it's the song she is known for and she had to end with it. I'm afraid in future I'll stick with the recording, I love it."
