Was a clean hit, part of the game. Kid's gotta learn to keep his head up and not try to be too fancy around D-men that know the right way to shut him down, which is exactly what that was. That's NHL hockey.
Clean hit. I’d say the scariest thing about the collision is Bedard’s right skate. It swings around about a foot away from a Smiths upper body like a scythe.
Hate to see the injuries but love to see the intensity. Reminds me of 90's hockey when rivalries between Colorado and Detroit and Philadelphia and New Jersey were gritty physical games.
Nice analysis. Overall I haven’t been a fan of Smith this year and I hate to see Bedard get hurt, but as you noted this wasn’t a dirty play. A rough one for sure… and puts the Devils in a tired, banged up spot as they look to play Vancouver tonight. They haven’t done well in back-to-back games as it is this year, and they have many on their schedule.
At first I thought Smith hit higher on initial contact, but looked clean enough when I finally saw a good angle. Hope Bedsy is alright and has all his Chiclets intact.
His head was up. What he needs to learn is this isn't juniors anymore. He can't expect to just dangle through the other team's defense so easily without getting it. He's lucky he doesn't play in the same division as Trouba because he would destroy Bedard every time Bedard attempted to do something like this.
His head may have been up but his eyes clearly weren’t which is what people mean by “keep your head up”. He lost his forward vision and put himself in a vulnerable position by looking at the puck and reaching for it right in the middle of the ice, the worst possible place to do so. He may have been able to get away with that in juniors but certainly won’t in the show.
IMO Bedard is genuinely performing insane for a 1st overall rookie. I can easily see this kid breaking some long-standing NHL record in the years ahead

He had 51 goals and 28 assists...
He's not a bust, but he is probably out for 6 weeks now. So much for a rookie of the year. That's the thing about being a good player too, you HAVE to be able to avoid being injured as a younger player.
I liked Smith a lot when he was on the redwings and rangers. Granted his game fell off a cliff on the rangers but he always had tons of heart and grit in his game. I find it annoying that folks want to fight the guy because Bedard skated face first into his shoulder….
Reminds me of when Gretzky played with Semenko, I like to see the tough guys showing their stuff in defence of the finesse players. This is truly a manly man’s game.
Clean hit, but you can't even do that anymore without the other team getting their undies in a bunch. Unfortunate that Bedard was injured, but it's always good to see teams not afraid to touch top players. Respect to Smith and the Devils.
You can bet Bedard won't complain about the hit, he's a solid individual and knows how the game works and it was a legal hit in open ice, but it is shitty when you see a franchise player leave the game after a hit, it's never easy to watch. He is a generational player and he's filling arenas with fans and pumping up TV ratings, even sports bars have huge nights when they have Hawks games on the screens. Bottom line, he is great for the game, in mamy ways he's a promotional tool, (just look at how many Bedard jerseys are being bought). Sure check him like crazy, but he has to remain in the game as he is helping promote the entire league and the game of hockey with every shift he plays.

As a die hard Devs fan, last nights game was rough. Couldn't believe we saw so much aggression and fighting. To be completely fair I was ready to judge the fuck out of Smith until I realized that Bedard just skated right into a wall 😂
Thankfully it didn't look like a concussion, maybe a tooth and/or jaw situation. Thanks for pointing out he probably didn't see Smith coming in, good analysis there!
No one wants to see anyone hurt, but boy o boy what a game! I feel bad for these new young stars, they cross the line and do things with their guard/head down. Jack Hughes does it too, hits like these will wake them up. It was nice to watch some old school hockey for once. Go Devils !
It's hockey. players get hit. Players get hurt. Players like Bedard come back. This isn't some learning experience, Bedard isn't the average rookie if you haven't noticed. He isn't stupid enough to think he won't be hit. He has already taken bigger hits than this. This was just an unfortunate circumstance. This changes nothing, he will play how he plays. Right now he is being asked to do everything offensively, in time more talent will come and the load will be lessened. People won't be able to target just Bedard the whole game like they have been. Bedard won't always have to try and make plays solo like this (because the alternative is passing to Taylor raddysh or some other bum). All the people who are glad Bedard got injured will get their just desserts the next time he plays your team (:
This is what I was worried about with Bedard.. as a Canadian hockey lover,I love his talent and skill but I had a feeling he wasn't going to be able to take hits..it was a clean hit , Bedard kept his head down..that falls on him.. hope he recovers soon
Watched him lots in the WHL and it was like the league told everyone not to hit him which I don't think was great for his development. He would always skate up the middle like that in the Dub and got away with it. It was only a matter of time before something like this happened.
While you hate to see players, especially young highly talented players, leave the ice and not return, this seemed like a throw back game… big hits, penalties, fights… and some good hockey in between. A lot of the time these days it’s all “nicey-nice”… the hits are token gestures, the fights are very few, it’s all a bit friendly for the hardest hitting team sport in the world. There was a bit of nastiness in this one, a “you took out our star, we’re taking you all out!”, replied with a “bring it on, bitches!” You hardly see players sticking up for their stars or their goalies anymore, so it’s quite refreshing to see some actual back-and-forth between the 2 teams.
It sucks to see how many people are celebrating it, too. Right from the moment he started playing, Twitter and Reddit have been full of posts about how Bedard needs to suffer a career-ending injury, someone needs to take out his knees or crosscheck him in the back of the head, and since this moment I've seen so many people saying that this was the best thing to happen to the NHL this season.
The thing I loved about hockey growing up is, you have to be tough as nails AND incredibly talented to play the game. If you don't have both of those qualities don't bother. I loved the hit, loved Bedard getting up and loved the defense of their star player. There was nothing in this game that I hate to see. This is hockey. Injuries are going to happen, just hope they are not career threatening. If you got to miss a few games so be it.

Bedard is a finest player with enormous talent yet on the smaller side. These players always had an enforcer going way back to Gu Lefleur, Gretsky etc. Chicago needs a Shultz or a Bouchard and things will settle down.
I’m sure people hate it, but I love when teams are constantly fighting and hitting/checking the whole game. ESPECIALLY when a team is defending one of their downed players like this.
This is why the Forwards need to protect the Center, especially if he is your star player (and a kid). Hit was Clean, absolutely no issue there, it happens. I suggest Bedard either switch to a cage or fishbowl if he wants to protect his face. Looks like Hughes did a number on his wrist when he fell as his stick got trapped under his skate, thats unfortunate. Both teams got very heated in this game (which is understandable), but the devils managed to keep good pressure in the 3rd as the Hawks seemed to lose their momentum that they had in the 2nd. I also don't think pulling the Goalie at the end of the 3rd has really worked out well for most teams this season, it is basically a free goal at the end of the game for the other team now.
Sucks for the Hawks to lose bedsy for a while but it was a great clean hit. Can't let a Bedard get an attempt on net, he's show that he can score when he wants if given a sniff of the net
Hawks fan so don't take this wrong but little dudes get hurt when they run at walls. No way Bedi saw him when he made that cut, hopefully he's OK for next game. Also except for Tinordi we don't have any meat left on the team, watching the "retaliation" right after was like seeing gradeschoolers tell highschoolers they're gonna tell their teacher
Right? Seney trying to run people, and he's smaller than Bedard lol. At least they fought back though, a chippy game is more fun to watch. I think Foligno might have broken his hand in that fight too. We do have some big boys though, Vlassic 6'6", Crevier 6'6", etc. But we have an AHL team out there lol. Go Hawks!
As much as Im tired of hearing about Bedard 24/7 the guy needs to be plying this reminds me of McDavids rookie season when he got hurt. I hope Bedard maybe just lost some teeth and he will be back.
IDC if ppl disagree, but Foglino makes current NHL hockey look ridiculous since his fight against Corey Perry, waiting later to fight a guy. Bad for Bedard but relatively clean hit. Then we are all complaning that there's no legal checking along the boards during gameplay when it would be useful to do it to steal the puck or avoid a scoring chance.
A good hit with a bad result. I hate to see anyone injured like that, but body checks are part of the game. For those who can’t accept that, the WPHL has just started up and they put on a good show of hockey for fans. There are many levels of the game to enjoy.
Beautiful, clean hit. But I can understand the retaliation. You don't want anyone taking liberties on your young franchise player, dirty hit or not. In a league where enforcers are history, it's good to see teammates sticking up for each other.
I think the reason Bedard hit his head was probably his own shoulder came up to his chin. My guess is he misses just the one game on concussion protocol.
Clean hit, but you have to answer the bell. Bedard is a rookie and already the best player on his team, so you have to expect a response. Bedard had his head up all the way, but things like this happen to everyone at some point. Everyone who is happy to see a player getting injured are scummy no matter who it is.
Looked like just got hit in the chin the wrong way hopefully he's alright. Its not like bedard is weak. Just small. clean hit, good teammates sticking up for their guy. Great game to watch
Unfortunately this is a sad reality of new young super star potential players. They hang on to the puck too long and skate with their head down looking at the puck. Plus the Black Hawk coaching staff don’t seem to have an enforcer to protect the superstar (like Gretzky had). Probably because they haven’t had a young superstar player in a long time! I hope Mr Bedard bounces back with more intensity and keeps his head up as the future belongs to this young man! He is amazing and a pleasure to watch!
It was a good clean hit. Skilled players years ago had to take hits like this on a nightly basis. Blackhawks suck, if they start winning Bedard is going to have to take a lot more hits like this.
We gotta teach kids comin up how to take contact and give contact. It’s so important so people don’t get unnecessarily hurt like this. We gotta do better.
Losing Bedard is brutal but the kid kind of had it coming. I mean his size just puts him at a disadvantage, unfortunately, and he was eventually going to find some ones shoulder in his chest sooner or later. I hope he bounces back to the same player and isnt afraid to cross the middle of the ice again
Clean hit. If you wanna dance in that spot expect to get caught every once in a while. He is young and will learn to avoid that allowing someone else to gain entry into the zone when the opponents are backed up in a group.
Bedard had it coming. As Mickey Redmond would say, HAH what did you think you were gonna dance across the blue line! Very sad to see him hurt but that type of play is only asking for it. He needs to keep it tame until he has teammates who can keep up with him. Until then its just him flying into the zone by himself, 175lbs soaking wet.
There was no malice on that hit on Bedard, he skated right into it really. Smith could of really nailed him but I think he held back. Though can you imagine that hit on say Yzermin or a young Gretzky with Probert or Semenko looming in the background??? Not a chance. The superstars these days are too unguarded and as a result get beat up a lot more than in the past. I don't think that is a good thing. On a different note The Blackhawks could really use an experienced, feisty skilled veteran like say, I don't know, Cory Perry?
People complaing about that hit? Bro If that was Scott Steven's and Bedard skated through the middle he would have left that game with his first concussion
this is one of my qualms with hockey man, clean hit and it could not have been any cleaner but because of the height difference it could have been an even worse hit to the head. the only way to fix it is removing hitting but i would rather watch tennis than hockey without hits so ultimately there is no fix. sucks to see though and im glad it wasnt a kariya situation man
This is hockey, if you think your going to step into the league as an elite player, and not have a target on your back, your in the wrong sport. It has been this way since I can remember, but that is what enforcers are for. For the youngin's in the room, those are guys whose sole job it was to let you know if you took a shot at the elite player, you were absolutely going to pay for it. When enforcers were removed from the game, injuries went up dramatically. Can't have your cake and eat it too folks.
if you don't want to get hit, you don't play hockey, especially not in the NHL (or any other physical league). It's not like he couldn't stand up anymore - as it happened to Leo Carlsson, for example -, so it's all good. Both teams have a generational, and the Hawks decided to create a whole squad of bodyguards to protect their young talent. To me, that's bad for the Bedard development, but I'm not an expert, and they might feel like it.
im a bit conflicted, because on one end, you have to stand up for your teammates, especially your star players. on the other hand, im sick of everyone on the ice losing their minds over a clean hit. sometimes, its part of the game, and maybe im only saying this as a rangers fan, jacob trouba throws a lot of hits that just level people, but dropping the gloves after a hit is just getting old. instead of fighting, have one of your more physical guys return the hit in the next few shifts, instead of a fight on sight after a hit
They do it to remove the momentum and restart, both physically and mentally. Plus, he's one of the few stars in the team, and with such a gentle hit, they're already doomed. How are they expecting people not to play hockey against them just because the League wants to advertise the kid? When Leo Carlsson went down badly, nobody reacted because it was unintentional and the Ducks have a team that isn't built around one player only. The same cannot be said for the Hawks. Maybe in 3-4 years, they'll start to look over their shoulders

Why does no one aid the less important guy on your team? Where is the code of brotherhood on that guy?! 🤣🤣😂😂
Was a clean hit, part of the game. Kid's gotta learn to keep his head up and not try to be too fancy around D-men that know the right way to shut him down, which is exactly what that was. That's NHL hockey.
his head was quite literally up lmaoaaoao - he just didnt see him fast enough
Bedsy?😂😂gay
Hard lesson for Bedard, always have to keep your head up when playing in the NHL. The hit wasn't even bad.
You're saying he should abandon the puck on that play. His coach will disagree.
His head was up, he's just small compared to Smith
He's a bust. Out of 800 players in the NHL, Bedard's +/- is tied for 798th worst. He has the worst record of all 100 current rookies. And it ain't because the team sucks. Dickinson is a +8. And it ain't because he's 18. So is Benson, and he's a plus 1. And it ain't because he's a rookie and rookies don't know how to play a two-way game. Marco Rossi is doing fine. No, it's because the dude is out to pad his stats and couldn't care less about playing as part of a team.
@@Borodin410 I mean yeah his +/- is bad but +/- in hockey doesn't show really anything. +/- in other sports is really indicative of who is a great player but not in hockey. It hurts players who actively shoot to score more You mean to tell me Ovechkin in 2013-2014 season with a +/- of -35 (which was 3rd worst in the league) was a bad player that season? He had 51 goals and 28 assists...
@@Borodin410bro is using plus/minus as a stat trying to prove a point hahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
@@VacuolateBeef24 lmao he’s copy and pasting it everywhere. The virgin just wants attention.
Great game! Everything Bedard does he'll learn from it and come back stronger.
We used to call this "hockey". Finally nice to see some physical play come back.
@@RobertRaz-j2ewhat are you going on about, never once was hockey ever about taking out players in a bad position it just happens. the fighting, hitting and grit of the game has be loss to more of a flashy style of play which i wouldn't say is a bad thing but leaves a lot of long time hockey fans longing for something more. just like this game gave.
yeah great hockey play lets ask Kariya,Savard and so many other that felt to these reckless open ice hits shoulder or elbows to the head....
Hahaha
I was at the game and yelled out. "HOLY SMOKES...a HOCKEY Game broke out!"
And for the record...if that was Scott Stevens inside of Smith...Bedard would be a dead man.
I was thinking Stevens as well...or Bryan Marchment.@@yoholmes273

the view @1:36 definitely confirms a clean hit. Probably rattled his teeth a bit. I played lacrosse and got rocked by clean hard hits to the chest and have definitely had the cage rattled by it. Doesnt look like any part of Smith hits his head or mouth.
Wow, this breakdown was a barn burner; all the chippiness, hard checks, fights, sweet goals, drama! You're *tops* among hockey video guys. Love how the hawks stood up for their guy without resorting to _florida-level_ dirtbaggery. Hoping the Devils can keep up this level of grit.
It's great to see how much the whole team is there to back up Bedard.
Yes if this was Toronto they'd all sit around drinking kambucha
they have built a whole team to defend that kid hahaha

Clean hit. Bedard has it coming he's tiny and the biggest name in hockey. More to come.
Steamroll his girly figure!

Blackhawks fan here. From the Old School Era of hockey and that was a clean hit. Hate losing the kid for a bit but such is life. When you have the puck, keep your head up and on a swivel. He should come back from this an even better player.
I'm a devs fan and I was hoping for a cool match up between Jack and Connor, I sure wasn't expecting that insane of a game.
With how much time off he will be getting, this is great for Faber. He could really pull through as a furthermore legitimate contender for the Calder
Glad I tuned into this one! Crazy game
As a die hard Devs fan, last nights game was rough. Couldn't believe we saw so much aggression and fighting. To be completely fair I was ready to judge the fuck out of Smith until I realized that Bedard just skated right into a wall 😂
Rough for who?
I was at the game and it wasn't "rough" for NJ at all.
The start of a rivalry-- I have no horses in this race but this matchup could be the next "must watch" games next year
Thankfully it didn't look like a concussion, maybe a tooth and/or jaw situation. Thanks for pointing out he probably didn't see Smith coming in, good analysis there!
Agreed
surprised to see this much hitting in today's nhl.
Seeing Mercer get into that brawl made me proud, he's not the most physical player but good to know he's got it in him
That was the cleanest hit I've seen in my entire time watching hockey, Smith even holds up a bit 😂 Glad the Devils won
It was bound to happen to Bedard at some point. At least it wasnt a serious season-ending injury for him (hopefully)
There was a bit of nastiness in this one, a “you took out our star, we’re taking you all out!”, replied with a “bring it on, bitches!”
You hardly see players sticking up for their stars or their goalies anymore, so it’s quite refreshing to see some actual back-and-forth between the 2 teams.
Good hit, solid hockey play, Bedard will learn from it.
Can you link a single one of those posts?…
@@danmulvaney4580 I guess so. I'll go over to the NHL subreddit and find some. Ugh I hate that site sometimes...
As a Hawks fan this makes me super happy. Passionate team putting themselves out there for the defense of their young superstar. Go Hawks
Imagine some people not enjoying hockey
Hate to see a clean hockey hit and someone finally doing it instead of just letting him skate through the zone...
The way his skates fly up man, so dangerous. Can’t believe neck guards aren’t mandatory yet
Skate didn’t even reach elbow height for one.. for 2 it’s the nhl not the minors, there’s professionals ready to go for serious incidents

@@itstmony2986 so wearing a neck guard is meaningless because doctors are prepared for incidents? by that retarded logic they just should get rid of helmets because doctors are prepared for head injuries 🤣🤣🤣
Go Hawks!
Smith's hit was pretty clean. Bedard may have lost a chicklet or two. Hope he is back soon as he's such an exciting talent.
As much as Im tired of hearing about Bedard 24/7 the guy needs to be plying this reminds me of McDavids rookie season when he got hurt. I hope Bedard maybe just lost some teeth and he will be back.
My to favourite players 2 bedard 1 Hughes but as a Canuck fan hoping Jack is injured today so we don’t need to play him
IDC if ppl disagree, but Foglino makes current NHL hockey look ridiculous since his fight against Corey Perry, waiting later to fight a guy. Bad for Bedard but relatively clean hit. Then we are all complaning that there's no legal checking along the boards during gameplay when it would be useful to do it to steal the puck or avoid a scoring chance.
Textbook hit. Clean and good.
100% clean hit, Bedard skated into a brick wall.
A good hit with a bad result. I hate to see anyone injured like that, but body checks are part of the game. For those who can’t accept that, the WPHL has just started up and they put on a good show of hockey for fans. There are many levels of the game to enjoy.
I hope he makes a speedy recovery and gets back on the ice. My only hopes for this season is that Bedard takes the Calder.
the giggle on "foligno with the slap here" sent me
"That can't happen to bedard" after watching it happen 30 times in slow motion.
Thank you !! Your the First Person to see that . Cause I looked at So many Videos and don't see any contact to his face but his own arm coming up 👍✌KK
Head down lil superstar. Clean hit and learning time
Good hit. Part of the game, no matter who it is.
Clean hit, and FFS he was trying to skate past THREE defensemen, as if this isn't the NHL.
Clean hit, keep your head up don't reach. Nhl where the big boys are
Clean hit. If you wanna dance in that spot expect to get caught every once in a while. He is young and will learn to avoid that allowing someone else to gain entry into the zone when the opponents are backed up in a group.
Clean hit. Im a blackhawks fan.
He likes going in that middle part entering the zone too. Makes me nervous every time.
Super clean hit. Going to happen more often as Bedard seems allergic to passing.
The ice view angle makes it look like the dirty hit some people think it is, unfortunately he had his head down and is also small to begin with.
any update on Bedard leaving the game? clean hit just bad placing when connor ran into him.
On a different note The Blackhawks could really use an experienced, feisty skilled veteran like say, I don't know, Cory Perry?
please tell me you mentioned Perry as a joke

No buddy. Love to see this. This is real hockey. Not a bunch of snotty nosed kids skating around like ballerinas.
this is one of my qualms with hockey man, clean hit and it could not have been any cleaner but because of the height difference it could have been an even worse hit to the head. the only way to fix it is removing hitting but i would rather watch tennis than hockey without hits so ultimately there is no fix. sucks to see though and im glad it wasnt a kariya situation man
That's a clean hit , I'm sorry that Bedard got hurt though. #thatshockey
Love to see this. Kid's gotta earn it like everyone else.
It's a good hit and a good reaction from teammates. The hit was clean as day but you should always stick up for your younger players.
Clean hit keep your head up rookies .
im a bit conflicted, because on one end, you have to stand up for your teammates, especially your star players. on the other hand, im sick of everyone on the ice losing their minds over a clean hit. sometimes, its part of the game, and maybe im only saying this as a rangers fan, jacob trouba throws a lot of hits that just level people, but dropping the gloves after a hit is just getting old. instead of fighting, have one of your more physical guys return the hit in the next few shifts, instead of a fight on sight after a hit
