You ever noticed that in the first episode of breaking bad when Walter is lighting and throwing matches into the pool he is contemplating cooking meth.
I noticed it after watching when tells the person at the store that it’s his territory.
Heisenberg is the shadow of walter white, the buried part of his unconscious that walter kept repressing over the years and it slowly manifested itself through expressing it's inner desire and it slowly took over, that's what happen when people ignore their shadows and don't try to integrate it, this is according to Jung

I always hated this idea. I hate "this is when Walter became Heisenberg." I think it misses the true implication of Walt’s character. Walter never "became" Heisenberg, they are the same person. Walter White has always been a man who has pride and respect at the forefront of his life, being held back by his loss, family, and Financials. His alias as Heisenberg gave him a chance to finally be who he really is, a power-hungry man who'd stop at nothing for adoration and control. Walter White always WAS Heisenberg, he just didn’t have the means to show it
I think the point of the show is to raise the question of when Walter becomes Heisenberg, not to answer it. "He was always Heisenberg" is a valid interpretation, but no more so than the interpretations that he became Heisenberg when he did X in season Y. The show frequently informs us about past events, such as Walt's departure from Gray Matter/falling out with Gretchen and Elliot, only very indirectly through how the characters feel about what went down decades later. We're very deliberately not given information that would give us clarifying insights on these points. We have no idea if Gretchen and Elliot consciously screwed Walt over (Gretchen does seem to be genuinely oblivious of why Walt would look at those events the way he does, but that could be a self-serving delusion or her being unaware of what Elliot may have done to Walt), or if he's nursing petty resentments over perceived slights. The debate IS the point. Breaking Bad is the eternal nature vs nurture debate applied to morality.
I think I take back my previous comment. We're both wrong, Walt straight up tells us the answer in his chemistry lecture in the first 10 minutes of the first episode of the series, and he says it's indeed about how he changes. Walt's arc is "growth, then decay, then transformation!"

Yes and no. I agree that Walter and Heisenberg aren't split personalities that flip like a switch. It's more like a spectrum. But to say that the man in Season 1 who grappled emotionally with the idea of killing an enemy so much that he spent an entire episode weighing the pros and cons of it and even getting to know the guy to look for reasons not to kill him is not the same man who, in Season 5, orders the outright killing of a bunch of guys the same way he ordered a meal at Denny's. It's like what was said about chemistry, he changed over time due to the circumstances around him. You'd be very surprised at what you or any person can become in different conditions and environments. That's not to absolve Walt of what he's done, he definitely owns accountability for it too but it was a slow, gradual process. Same thing went for Jesse except he had a positive arc and not a negative one. He started out as a junkie, went through shit and came out clean on the other side. Walt ironically turned into a junkie, his drug being that of power and control. One that he took his first hit telling himself yeah, it's just for my family, I'm going to stop after this. But he never could quit and always ended up getting "high" once more. Are we defined solely by our worst attributes? I don't think so. By the end of Season 5 we don't still see Jesse as the junkie he was in Season 1-3, during his lowest points. Why then should we see Heisenberg as the true Walt? Heisenberg is the outward manifestation of the darkness inside every person that can come out when pushed too far, if we allow it to happen.

@@Aleczandxr The real tragedy is that people call the man just before the cancer diagnosis "Walter." We can clearly see the *real* Walter during the house buying scene, and hints of this real Walter in his previous relationship with Schwartzes, and in the strained relationship with his wife starting from the first episodes. There are at least three phases: young Walter, then Mr White the science teacher, then Heisenberg. What transforms Walter into Mr White is the Schwartzes and his wife defeating him. Mr White is a man who serves his wife but doesn't love her. That's one thing line I feel was off in the video - it wasn't so much that _he_ fell in love with the house, but _she_ did. There is nothing about Mr White's life that he loves, merely those he wishes he loved, likely even thinks himself bad for not loving - I don't know if that can be called "holding dear" or not, but "I should love you" is still more warmth than Heisenberg's guiltless embrace of non-love. Point is, young Walter wouldn't have continued living in that home, but that was when he still had entrepreneurial ambition and before Mr White sought solace from defeat in the mediocrity of Skyler. The Mr White we see in the first episode is an old trope of American TV, but the portrait of the defeated man implies a deeper personality, hidden within his memory, of a man yet undefeated.
@@joshshrum2764 And what was that? Because in the actual show it was a way of showing that Walt didn't go for half-measures. It was used correctly in the video and it all makes sense, but it was used in the show in a different way so I don't buy that you applied it in this way when you saw it.

A detail related to the point you make that stood out to me on rewatch is that the meth business got Walt‘s interest BEFORE his diagnosis, not after. He didn’t find out about his cancer then see a good way to make money illegally, he saw something that he knew he’d be the best at and then got the news that he’d never have to face the consequences of that business.
Great point, I hadn't picked up on that but it's very true. The core interest was always there, it's just that the cancer was what made him take the leap.

For me, the moment at the end of Face Off where he tells Skylar “I won” was the turning point where Walt surrendered himself to Heisenberg; not because of the things he did, but his reaction. For all the terrible things he did before (killing Krazy 8, not saving Jane, making Jesse kill Gale etc.) there were hints of remorse and/or uneasiness within Walt, but upon learning his plan to kill Gus was successful, he doesn’t seem to think about all the messed things he did to get there (poisoning a kid, using a physically weak and helpless man in the plot, blowing up a hospital etc.) or how his family will react to all of it. All that mattered was that he beat Gus.
Well at the same time, he had the least reason to have any remorse to kill Gus. He was literally going to kill his family.

You're right about it being his reaction, but you're wrong about it being about a lack of remorse. There was no reason to have any remorse. It's not about that, it's all about how his personality shifted. He became fully confident and became the Heisenberg persona for the first time.
Yeah this is it. I’ve never bought into the idea that Walt and Heisenberg are distinct and seperate personalities. They’re linked and they intertwine.

I think it’s more than that. WW with confidence and years of resentment built up. If he would have come up with this confidence he’d probably be a lot more stable and wholesome. But the resentment of not being confident for so long made him bitter and willing to use that confidence for horrible things

What really sells this outlook to me is in Ozymandias when Walter, despite defintely being a lot closer to Heinsberg than himself, is still desperately fighting to keep Hank alive even though all it would do is hurt him.
They aren’t too separate entities, they just come out at different times.
It actually makes the most sense that he'd fight to keep him alive. It shows all these horrible people would do anything once their family is in the crossfire. It's why Jess is the perfect character. He's want Walt thinks he is. He brings morality to it. He pleads for his life. Taking a life is something he needs drugs to live with.
A scene that clearly shows how insecure Walter/Heisenberg still is is when he tells Hank that the book he found isn´t that of the original "Genius" meth cook but rather just someone who was trying to copy the real Heisenberg
He was SO petty at having his work not recognized (probably a trauma he got when he quit Gray Matter only for it to run with his ideas and earn millions) that he HAD to make Hank aware he hadnt really found anything on Heisenberg
Also that led in the end to his own demise when Hank eventually found the "to my other WW" in the book whilw taking a shit

I can't help but grin and chuckle whenever I see that scene of Jesse and Walter high fiving and yelling with joy after their massive batch in the desert. Even though its meth, the sheer joy of putting in effort and seeing it pay off is exhilerating
Thanks for including the flashback in s03e13, when Skyler is pregnant with Walt Jr. and she and Walt are shopping for the house. There is something about that scene, with Walt outrageously cocky and pushing Skyler around a bit (and basically refusing to listen to what she's saying) that shows he's always been a malignant narcissist. Maybe he was able to keep it at bay and/or lost that instinct for a while, but it was always there.

The speech he gave at the school assembly, downplaying the plane crash, always stood out to me. We were seeing him present as Walt, but it was Heisenberg's greed and ambition behind a Walt mask. For me that was when the shift crystalized

Heisenberg was the shadow side of Walt and as with every repressed shadow Heisenberg had his positive qualities but was deeply selfish. I actually think that in the last episode Heisenberg doesn't exist anymore. it's just Walter White who has integrated with his alter ego in a positive manner. And indeed in Felina Walter is determined, unafraid, scary even, but he is finally working for altruistic reasons.
He puts his ego aside and uses Gretchen and Elliott to pass along his money, knowing that they will get the credit. He admits his sins to Skyler. He plans to sacrifice himself in order to avenge Hank. And in the end he saves Jesse and gives him a second chance. All of that would be impossible without his time as Heisenberg but in the end Walt is the one doing it.
Ultimately it's a story of a man casting off the fear that paralyzed him from action in the past and becoming a dark reflection of what he always was. He was a man of great ambition held back by uncertainty, but once his death was certain he was able to cast off his feelings of uncertainty and embrace his starved ambition and ego.
Doesnt that make him a role model? We all yearn to feed our egos. We're all held back from being our true selves.
@@RoScFan It's implied that in the past Walter burned his bridge to success with Gray Matter because he hadn't built it. He cut himself out of Gray Matter, when he say how much money Gretchen's family had he gave up both the relationship and a chance at being a multi billionaire. All because his ego wouldn't let him feel inferior and get a life which he hadn't made for himself. He then allowed his ambition to smolder as he became a family man and an overqualified chemistry teacher. Breaking Bad was his endlife crisis, a sudden time limit that spurred him into vitality. He made a self destructive grab at the wealth and power he always dreamed of, built through his wits and talent.
The moral here is to not let your ego control your destiny. Don't let it deny you opportunity, and lead you into self destruction. You can do great things if you keep your ego in check, or terrible things if you let it fester until it explodes.
He has always had the tendency to go to the “dark side” they mentioned that he left gray matter due to a feeling that his girlfriend came from a rich family. He always had pride issues. The planets aligned and created the scenario to let those dark tendencies come out as seen by the show. Great show. :)

Walter White is obviously a perfectionist. He thinks a lot of things but doesn't follow through. He's said that he was scared before, I believe as a perfectionist, he's scared to not get the results he expects. He's scared to fail. But with an impending death, he believes he won't even be alive to face consequences if he fails.
Thus, Heisenberg is simply Walt that has gained the confidence to act on his thoughts. They're no different, Heisenberg is like a drunk Walt.

Makes sense, considering that when we actually see drunk Walt, he acts more like Heisenberg. The pool party scene where he makes Walt Jr. drink and puke and intimdates Hank is a great example of this, as is the scene where he tells Hank that he probably hasn't caught the real Heisenberg.

6:04 I know this is a little off-topic, but as someone who deals with anxiety and hesitation daily which is holding me back, this rings true and was brilliantly put. I am only free when I act as the person I desire myself to be. It’s not who I am but who I want to be. I have not developed a personality so it makes it easier to adopt one. And I have been given the “stimulus” now to break from these chains hopefully for good…

I feel like part of his transition is a commentary on the idea of “knowing yourself.” The idea that you don’t know who you really are until you’ve been through struggles and figured out your values. Walt IS Heisenberg, he just needed a push to understand his values and priorities. Jesse on the other hand, needed to struggle to find out that he isn’t a bad guy at heart, he’s not a criminal at heart, and it’s shown that Walt and Jesse really are opposites. Jesse’s a bad guy with a good heart that turns into a better person, Walt is a good guy who’s bad on the inside and becomes worse when given the chance.
I find this topic so interesting because I think people can change when they’re incredibly desperate and people can change when they have all power in the world. Breaking bad plays with both those ideas.

He's still Walter White. He's not a different character. This show is a study of good to evil in one character. That character is Walter White, and Heisenberg is a pseudonym he uses when selling producing meth. Yes he uses the name a lot more as the series progresses and his actions take a turn for the dark side, but that doesn't make him "full on Heisenberg". The character is still Walter White.

The definition of fear is "the anticipation of pain".
If you are afraid, then identify the actual amount of pain that you fear.
Often, that fear is unwarranted when you compare the worst case to the best case.
For me, the turning point is when he went from "I need X amount of money for my family's future to be decent" to "this person is an obstacle that needs to be dealt with"
That audio from Granite State in the beginning gave me chills. "You sound very.... sure."
The fact of the matter is we, as an audience, relate to Walt. Every good person has been put in a position where they do bad things (though it may not be as extreme compared to Walt). So in the very beginning, whenever Walt says he wants to cook meth-in order to leave something behind for his family-we simply believe him.
Duuude I've been loving these videos on breaking bad you've been making. It's got some really insightful analysis on Walter as a person and not simply viewing him and Heisenburg as separate personalities or personas. I'd love to see these kinds of deep-dives into other Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul characters, since this short essay format works really well for discussing things in bite-sized chunks

I personally interpret Heisenberg as an evil hidden in each of us that needs certain events in life in order to be activated and then revealed. The moment Walter White realized what a mistake it was to refuse to work with Eliot and Gretchen on the $ 5,000 gray matter project was the moment he launched internal Heisenberg at Walter. The scene in which Walt found out about cancer revealed Heisenberg, and this caused the evil in Walter to grow over time. In short, Heisenberg is the protagonist's wounded ego, which is fed more and more harm to other people and the profit of Walter White.
I just realized something here, Walt wanted so much to be respected and feared as his alter ego Heisenberg but the key moment in that pub is when Gretchen says on TV that she recognizes that person as Heisenberg not as a worthy human being anymore she once loved so the exact opposite of what he had been expecting from the very person he felt undermined by in the past.
That hurt Walt in my opinion maybe more than the Grey matter empire stuff and reenactes his Heisenberg process but this time being aware it's just him using Heisenberg as a cover to fix things.
Whatever that show is brilliant from head to toes 😍

I always thought the parallels to Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde were self-evident, I am kinda surprised to see so many people think no piece of Walt remained, even up to Felina when he helped Jesse
Heisenberg is WW’s Id. WW is subconsciously aware of how much he’s failed given his abilities but morality and familial responsibility kept him from acting upon it, “making up for lost time.” When faced with death WW felt a need to somewhat ignore it. When the imminent threat was gone but WW saw the fruits of his labor and the scope of his talent the cat was already out of the bag.
Heisenberg is like a compound, with Walt being one element, and the diagnosis being the other. Therefore I believe that the moment Walt became Heisenberg after the reaction had concluded, so he was only truly Heisenberg at the moment before his death. But I do agree with the idea that Walt was never lost
One thing that I've never seen someone say is that his chosen monicker, Heisenberg, is very known for his "Heisenberg's uncertainty principle"
Which is a very good metaphor of what he's been throughout the series.

I think creating the construct that Walter was two different people is interesting, but fundamentally devalues the importance of this story. Remember his character is a progenitor of characters like Tony Soprano with the twist of us witnessing his metamorphosis. His story is interesting because he was every man confronting death and doing what was needed to care for his family. The hook is what would happen to him(or us) when the rules that govern us no longer matter, and we are left with the limits of our own agency. All the while pushing the characters and viewers empathy further and further until we feel him become a monster. You see, he is not any less Heisenberg than Walter even in the beginning, that's why we love it. Because it makes us think about that nature of evil, and of ourselves.

Nobody likes to talk about when Walter was found out by Hank, Walter wanted to turn himself in. Then Skyler said no, and forced him to make the confession tape, and wanted Walter to kill Jessie.

I know this video was made months ago, but I do want to point out one thing. I forget which episode, but Walter notes that he sees chemistry not at the study of reactions (or some other word) but as the study of change, which goes with how Walter himself ends up going through change.

I have always believed that if you track the timeline of the show (which is 2 years and 1 day) that Heisenberg took over 9 months after the diagnosis. (Heisenberg was conceived as the cancer and of coarse was given birth 9 months later) I have not watched this show in a while so I don’t know at what point in the series this is, but it’s always seemed logical to me
