Nicely described. I find that this is necessary every year or two. After cleaning it is also a good idea to 'feed the wood' with teak oil. This enhances the look. If you do it every year, and don't mind the roughness too much, it is not necessary to sand it. Pressure washing alone is enough unless you want a 'like new' look. After all, it is GARDEN furniture, not living room furniture!
Wise words and good advice.
I did this for a neighbour who is quite specific about not wanting to finish, only natural. It’s a wonderful transformation just after jet hosing the key is all sand. Please consider subscribing if you haven’t already I’ve got 70 other videos, that you might find useful. Cheers Sion.
Thank you! I purchased some chairs that were used and look just like the bench before you sanded it. I cannot wait to get them looking like new!
Go for it . Its such a satisfying process. Cheers Sion
This is so helpful! Now that the weather is warming up, I can't wait to tackle my Adirondack chairs that look like your "before" pictures of the bench! Thank you!

that's encouraging, thank you! Ours has rotted quite badly on the feet (I've had to put a terracotta tile under one), I've done rough running repairs on the struts between legs and the support bar across the middle has gone. I won't give up on it though (we bought it for our 10th anniversary 20 years ago). This gives me hope.
What a lovely story . Keep working on it . I saw the wood whisperer once wrap tape around an upturned outside table leg and upturned pour in epoxy to create a surface that would never rot or suck water up into the wood . Hope that idea helps . Cheers Sion
@@sionhughes5543 oooh, thanks for that!
Done with such care. Nice.
What a lovely comment. Bless you . Regards Sion
This guy is a real professional, nice job !
Interesting work, high quality video, clear explanation of the work

Just the instructional video I was looking for!!! Thanks :)
Hi Virginia , Really glad you enjoyed the video. It was a lot of fun and I must say I am addicted to pressure washing. Please consider subscribing if you haven’t already. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Cheers Sion
Thank you, Good and clear Instructions.

Little disappointed at no finish. But then you mentioned "the customer".
Those darn customers!
You really did a great job on the sanding! That piece looked brand new!
NICE JOB !
Glad you enjoyed the video and teak oil would have looked lovely , oh well ….please consider subscribing if you haven’t already.
Not sure about pressure washing, not sure it does teak any favours. However, the sanding was a good call. As for treatment, have read that you should only treat furniture if it is kept indoors.
Hi Nick , I wanted to show what people could actually accomplish with household items such as a jet washer and a hand sander . I have a good friend who has his own sailing yacht with a teak deck and I have been lectured about the correct treatment. The teak cleaning fluids are expensive and requires a lot of elbow grease . I do appreciate jet hosing is a very aggressive treatment but if sanded afterwards does minimal damage and certainly looks way better than if it were left alone . I left this one untreated as that is what the customer specified . Thanks for taking the time to comment. Cheers Sion
What to do if you dont own a pressure washer?
I suppose a wire brush and a hose pipe would work, but just take longer
Awesome 😎👍
Really glad you enjoyed it .
Thanks, great video as I just picked up an old table with similar damage. Maybe just me but the music doesn't do it for me, much rather preferred voiceover :)
Fair enough, glad you enjoyed the video
Great job, can I ask, why you wouldn't give it a few coats of teak oil?
Hi, thanks for the nice comment. The owner had bought it and it was just a standard finish and that’s how they wanted it to be restored to.
Why not applying a sealing coat to keep it safe more time?
Because the customer requested that the teak remained natural
Would you get the same result if skipped the hose and just sanded? Curious what you think, cheers, Matt
I think you would sand away a lot more wood than needed because all the dirt and moss would be sanded into the grain of the wood and then you would be sanding to get a uniform colour . Also it would take you ten times longer to achieve the same aesthetic, in my opinion. Cheers Sion
That is what I do with my outdoor teak furniture. It is a bit rough to the touch but that does not matter much, if you don't want it to be 'like new'..Also, it will last longer if you don't sand it because you will remove less wood each year that way.
Is there any risk of damaging the wood with the pressure of the jet wash?
Yes especially if the wood is rotten . Jut be careful and follow what I did . As you can see it works a treat
I was hoping to see how you sanded between all the slats
Hi Gail, With that soft Micra sanding pad ….. Hope you liked the end result.Cheers sion
Simply apply sand paper to your tongue and lick.
Hello, thanks for all these good advices. What number is the hand-sanding pad you are using? Thanks
Hi , from memory I think it was 240 grit Micra Abranet
Nice of you to answer. Thank you
I am doing similar project in my garden I have sanded it and looks good. Would you mind sharing what I can apply on top to keep furniture in that colour
Hi Zara, I believe teak oil will both protect and enhance the look of the wood . I hope that helps. Cheese Sion
Thanks.

Do you know what PSI you used on the pressure washer?
I believe that was done with a Karcher K4 on full power
HI which sand machine did you use?
Hi Rick, I used. DeWALT DWE6423 . 120 and 240 grit . Hope that helps. Please consider subscribing if you haven’t already, cheers Sion
Hi great vid, how long did this take please?
Hi , in nice dry weather the whole process is a couple of hours
Spraying like this is the worst thing you can do to living breathing wood. Far better to use a very stiff brush to get all the moss and dirt off and then use a wood cleaner and wash it down. you can use teak oil lightly applies to finish off
Hi Andrew I am sure what your saying is true but I do have a bit of a jet washing addiction and I have some 20 year old teak chairs that I have cleaned every other year with the jet hose and they still look good . A good friend of mine has a sail boat with a teak deck and he uses chemicals to keep that tidy but, like me jet washes everything in the garden . Thanks for taking the time to comment . Cheers Sion
Once a tree is cut down and especially after being dried, its dead
@@nateb4543 my chairs regularly grow leaves, care to explain?
How powerful is your jet washer? I’m looking into getting one to do the same work on my terrace and bench, is 120 bar good enough?
I must admit I don’t know . It certainly sounds powerful enough . Mine was bought from B&Q and was a mid range model. It is great fun jet washing as you know and works well on hard wood . Thanks for taking the time to comment and please consider subscribing if you haven’t already. Cheers Sion
@@sionhughes5543 ok clear. Thank you!
I’ve tried to find if there’s any writing on the back of my pressure washer but all it says is Karcher K 4 which is the model number I hope that helps
@@sionhughes5543 awesome, it’s 1800W - 130 bar. A bit more powerful that the one I was planning to buy but I think they’re close enough to get the job done. Thanks for checking, much appreciated!
@@sionhughes5543 subbed!
Didn't you put a finish on it after sanding it?
No the client just wanted it natural
I’m looking for a sealant that won’t change the natural wood color. Which one do you recommend?
@djayg9898 did you find the answer to your question? I've been researching this same thing...
You left it natural? So, you'll have to do it again next season.
I did this at the request of the person who owned it
Hi Sion! Which model of DeWalt are you using here? I want to buy a sanding machine to do theses little jobs but I'm not sure which one to buy. Thanks! :)
Hi , I am using a DWE6423 . Wonderful little machine. I clean mine with compressed air and the Velcro has never fail . Please consider subscribing and check out my channel . There are approximately 60 videos all dealing with DIY and a couple of non DIY ones . Cheers Sion
I have a little square Makita sander, and it takes normal hand sanding sheets after dividing into four, clipped in at each end, saves a fortune on special shaped mini sanding pads, and the corners still get into awkward spaces, wouldn't be without it now.
Oil it up a couple of coats
The person who i renovated it for didn’t want any finish
@@sionhughes5543 pointless exercise then
Helpful info but you didn't need to show so much sanding, I got it after the first 10 seconds.
Hi Joanne , thanks for taking the time to comment and sorry about the endless sanding . I guess I got carried away in the editing process. Glad you found the video helpful . Please please consider subscribing and check out my channel as there are another 60 videos you might find useful. Cheers Sion
You must be retired, who has time for that???😂
I am trying to retire but that was filmed on a day off and the whole process was a morning. Well worth the effort i would say
Don't pressure wash. It's to aggressive
I understand your point of view but most people want quick easy results and that particular wood is so hard it will forgive this process at least twice
