- This is part 2 of a 3 part series on the Instrument Pilot ACS. Join me as I take a deep dive into the ACS from an examiner's perspective and discuss how I use this document to conduct an instrument checkride. If you plan to take your instrument practical test, you don't want to miss this!

Seth, this is so very helpful. I am training for IFR toward the end of the year and your videos are preparing me. I will watch them several times taking copious notes. To have an actual DPE serve as a coach for the check ride is too good to be true! Keep 'em coming.
Seth is amazing, I would love to fly with him at some point. Regarding your IFR training, how is it progressing ?
Thanks for asking. I am getting new avionics in my plane and it was supposed to be ready the end of December. But alas, it is still in the "works." I am hoping by mid-April it will be up and going. Then I hope to fly 4-5 days per week and get 'er done.
@@timhoke2 You will get it, good luck with everything.
Awesome thank you
Good stuff dude! 🤘🏻
Thanks!
Hey there Seth fantastic series, this has been very useful towards my training leading up to my instrument check ride! I wanted to throw out an addition to your acs series of all the ratings. If you created 3 different simulated check ride orals for the three ratings with you and a simulated applicant this would also be very helpful as all your knowledge in these series would be applied and serve as a great visual aid!
Great idea. I'll see what I can do.
Thank you so much for sharing these. I have a check ride in a few days and these videos have been incredibly helpful!
So glad to hear that you have found them helpful. Please let me know how your checkride goes, best of luck to you!
So how did it go?
Your pet peeve about configuring before the FAF. My instructor literally taught me to do it 1 mi before the FAF. I will admit though, that the times that I do my GUMPS and configure two or three miles before the FAF, things feel a lot better.
I'll have to go back and see what I said, but configuring a mile prior to the FAF is perfect. My pet peeve is when we are several miles out and configure which forces the pilot to add a lot of power to maintain altitude just to pull that power out when they reach the FAF to descend. Hope that clears it up and sorry for any confusion!
I really enjoy watching this!
Great!
These series are great and I recommend them every chance I get. Is there a possibility of a video or podcast on how flight computers work in terms of converting analog pressure information into a digital output like you mentioned?
Thank you! Yes, I will be doing a video or two on digital instruments in the near future!
Thanks so much Seth, just as Part 1 of the IFR review, Part 2 is so helpful. One question as I go through this video, under the ACS, Section 2, Preflight Procedures, in Task C / Skills, you mention an IFR Systems Checklist. Where can I find this specific checklist? I wasn’t aware of the Fore Flight checklist until you mentioned in this video and now I use them all on every flight. An IFR Systems Checklist would be very helpful. Or, is this a list I need to develop myself? Thanks so much for all of your training videos and support!
So glad you found them helpful! Since IFR systems can vary greatly from one aircraft to another there isn't a common IFR systems checklist. Creating a custom one within ForeFlight would be an excellent way to learn your aircraft's systems though. Your CFII should be able to help you create one.
There isn’t any part I should skip. Thank you!
Hey Seth. First off, these videos are GREAT! I failed my instrument check ride oral, and these videos have helped tremendously in some areas! My retake is this coming Saturday. Are you still planning on making a video talking about how the digital displays (such as g1000 and G5) get their altitude/attitude information? For some reason, I am having a difficult time locating this technical information. The user manual for the G5 barely mentions it; it literally just says that it uses a "solid-state AHRS" and that's it. Perhaps I am missing something.
Good Luck! Mine is next Thursday!
Exploring the "black box" of digital instruments is going to be a topic of an upcoming video. Stay tuned! Thanks for the feedback!
Your videos are so helpful
What if your garmin 355 is current but 430 waas is not. Can you still do the checkride?
Depends on the checkride. You could do a private or commercial but if you were planning on using the 430 in a instrument ride it would need to be updated.
The flight to get this update was her last. RIP 🙏
@@rbrazz wow, I didn't realize who this was until you pointed it out. Very sad.
Did you miss speak at 12:45?
About what specifically? I rewatched that section and didn't recognize anything incorrect.
@@SethLakeDPE I’m sorry I could be wrong. You said what if your altimeter stops getting good data from the petot tube. The petot tube works the ASI only right?
