The American M551 light tank was developed to provide the US Army with an air-deployable armored fighting vehicle that could support airborne troops. The Sheridan had a 152mm cannon/launcher that could fire conventional rounds and Shillelagh anti-tank missiles. Today, we had the opportunity to speak to someone who crewed it at NTC.

It's always interesting to see how the crew members thought of their vehicle
I can tell you about the vehicle I had. While it’s not a tank, there is a version of it in warthunder. Up until a year ago, I had m1068(same vehicle as m113 but with different role) assigned to my section , and it fucking sucks. All 113s fucking suck. They break down constantly. If it’s above 70 degrees, even with the vehicle running perfectly and all components have been replaced or fixed, it will overheat, simply because of the design. It’s a real piece of shit that needs to be retired.
I know I would have thought that the Sheridan was hated by crews before this

My dad trained in M551 in the 82nd. He REALLY liked the 152mm HE. He said in real battle it would provide invaluable infantry fire support that you couldn’t get being an airborne.
I asked him about tank combat. He said something like the Sheridan should never engage against armor bc it was never designed to go against them. But in the end,
M551s were very well liked bc it provided insane direct support firepower.
makes sense, the 152mm is firepower is something that soldiers (especially Airborne) rarely get to call in, it hits REALLY hard.
That's basically the concept of modern light tanks. Infantry fire support, not anti-tank.
I always wondered how would it perform with the regular 90mm, 115mm or 120mm, logistically saying it would be better, but combat wise, would fit that niche? Would it perform better?
@@Rrgr5 I doubt the platform would physically be able to support a full blown 115mm or especially 120mm tank gun.
@@MberEnder well, I don't really know the specifics of the platform, but I think the Russians have a airborne 125mm self-propelled gun, so maybe could've done, at least the 115mm.
I always liked the idea of the Sheridan, small, light, air portable tanks are always a very interesting and cool idea

@@BHuang92 throw out the gun, keep the vehicle? Just a decade later you could have installed autocannon and separate ATGM on the same turret and get a light tank with firepower of Bradley. Sort of an american version of BTRD mixed with PT-76?

@@CWHistory07 The gun had problems with cracking due to pressure.
A brad turret on a Sheridan may work, or at least the brads weapons. Cheaper to convert than build new.

You should do a video on the German JaPzK light tank. It’s 8.3 and gets a laser rangefinder, apfsds, a 105mm cannon, thermals, a drone and a decent auto loader
Topic suggestion: talk about the C1 ariete and how bad It was or another video where you show us if the ariete was historically accurate (Broken english i know)
My Dad was a tank commander for 113s, M60s, and M551. Said they were good tanks. But the early ones had computer problems. He actually saw the first XM-1 doing maneuvers at the Hood. Where he was a Drill Sergeant.
I always got the sense that the Sheridan was pretty good after ironing out the initial teething problems, but not perfect; it was the gun-launched missile that was trash because the tech wasn't there yet, and the missile gave it the bad reputation.
It's pretty cool some random gamers on the internet are able to find people that served with the real versions of the tanks in a video game and share their stories though.
From what I've heard that basically was the case for the Sheridan, during Vietnam it was strongly disliked, but by the time Desert Storm was happening up until it was phased out, it was liked for what it was.
It probably should have mounted a 90mm gun and to hell with the missile. Yea you won't bust T-72s from the front with it, but you weren't going to do that reliably with the 152mm either. So at least go with something that worked.
@@Crosshair84 It's primary a fire support vehicle. Not an anti tank weapon. 152mm he is going to do more damage than a 90mm he.
I knew a vehicle commander with the Sheridan back when I was in the service. His biggest complaint about it was the sights on the main gun could be knocked out of alignment by the recoil...it took a while to correct the problem. Beyond that, most of the criticism of it was based on expecting it to do stuff it wasn't designed or expected to do. It's like someone said "Oh, it's a light TANK? Well, if it's a TANK, it should be able to go up, one-on-one with the Soviets' TANKS, right? Oh, it's way inferior to a T72 head-to-head? Total failure!" and some reporters ran with that.
I honestly wish they added in the LAV 25. My dad served in one of those things in Iraq. He mainly did maintenance and electronic warfare however, I don’t really talk to him about his combat experience in Iraq that often. All I know is that he was in the 3rd LAR stationed in Ar Rutbah in what the Marines called Korean Village and mostly did electrical work and worked in the small detainment facility they had there.
My grandpa drove this tank for a while and was actually fond of its responsiveness and power
I suspect he would have been just as happy, if not more so, with the T92 light tank that the Sheridan bumped out of being adopted. It was as fast and maneuverable as the M551, but could actually survive a mine.
Spookston would love being on OPFOR. Fort Irwin is hardly an ideal posting, but it's an unparalleled opportunity to go full goblin mode in an armored vehicle.

I am a Finn. My father crewed a T-55M, and always called it "The worst piece of shit I have ever had the displeasure of having my ass stuck in." MyGrandfather (Mat.) flew with the FinAF, and loved his Bf-109. Flew it til the 50s iirc. Grandpa (Pat.) operated a T-34-85, and uh. He also hated it dearly. I had the pleasure to see the enemy tanks he gunned down first hand, many of them still sitting rusting in fields, covered in snow. He knew the story of each kill, and could tell it vividly.
Yea crew comfort uh has eluded Russian vehicles for a long time. I've seen pics and videos of the inside of a BMP and it just looks like hell.

Extremely wholesome. Please more content like this, and personal interviews also count as a direct source for study, so it's very legitimate.
These types of interviews are probably the best way to get a real look at how a vehicle operated and its functionality. Often as terminally-online AFV nerds we tend to pour over documents and specs and compare them, when in reality a crew member could tell you something completely different. I’m looking forward to more of these types of videos! I think one that would be super interesting would be a Bradley crew member or perhaps some aircraft pilots.
I knew a man who was a Sheridan TC back in the early 80s, I believe. He spoke very highly of it and said it was his favorite tank to crew. He told me about a new gunner that was training, who didn't keep his face to the pad on the gun sight when firing despite being warned. Said gunner got hit in the head when the vehicle recoiled backwards from firing.

I really loved the video you put out today, it brings a more inside perspective on the crew of famous tanks or IFVs, etc. It's nice to hear their side of what they operated on and their stories and thoughts. I'd like to see a video with you interviewing him on his experience with the M1s, he seems quite knowledgeable about them.

Especially since a light tank on Bradley chassis(ie without space for dismounts, lower hull profile and probably different armaments) was talked about and promised for 3(or is 4 now?) decades and never materialized.

@@TheArklyte Correct. Not like a Bradley. Worse because it can’t carry troops and would carry even less ammo for the launcher with all the room the auto cannon and ammo would take up. Terrible idea.
@@volatile5460 in armament? Yes... maybe? I feel like it could be done before Bradley appears so likely it'd be using older armament options IE 20mm gun instead of 25mm one for example.
But it's not IFV, it has no dismounts. It's also more mobile, both on its own and strategically. Plus it's a modification of an already existing vehicle, not something you need to build from scratch. So nope, it's still a light tank.
I was in Bravo Company 3/73 armor at Ft. Bragg from '86 to '89. The tanks were fast, easy, and fun to drive but the gun recoil was as violent as hell. Electronic equipment for the missile system would sometimes break loose from the turret walls and fall down on you. Altogether it was easy to maintain, fairly reliable and the crew positions were easy to operate. My MOS destination was 19D-1P- R8. Thanks for the video it brought back some great memories.
I think the gun could have been solved if it had been a 2 piece solid brass shell and not caseless
Fun fact the WG put the Sheridan into the game world of tanks blitz with the ability to fire ATGM

It was removed into the Sheridan missile a special version that players could only use on special game modes and training rooms
Interesting. WoT Blitz developers are obviously far more adventurous than WoT PC. (Although PC has copied some things that were in other versions first. Plus we have rocket tanks so I'm not saying PC is realistic in any way.)
Wasn't that the tier 8 prototype of the Sheridan that they did that? I haven't touched wotb in 3 years
@@sharkk127 I'm pretty sure that the T49, T92E1 and Sheridan could all fire those. They were removed quickly though, and now you can only use them on the Sheridan Missile tank in event gamemodes. Pretty sure you cannot get that tank anymore though
it can do that in WoTC too, at least with the Cold War variant
@@szymsonthatmemeguy3181 only the T92E1 and Sheridan could. The T49 that could fire ATGMs was labelled “T49 ATGM” and was only for an event.

My uncle served in one of these, I have his Sheridan patch on his old jacket, it's really cool!
So spookston here's a update, he served in the 91st training brigade and the patch says "M551 CREW 1977 distinguished"
Love hearing commentary from the guys themselves! It helps give a much needed perspective to usually dry specs and data. And one day we won't have their stories and viewpoints, so from a archival perspective it's important too! Also, that was great, just let his Dad in the training, NBD.

At one point if felt like listening to someone talk about the Sherman, at the end of the day it doesn't matter much what armour or gun it has, if it gets the job done and is easy to use/repair the men will love it

Ran into a gulf war Sheridan tanker at an airshow decades ago - like 2003-2004. Will never forget how I asked him if it was a piece of crap and he most empathically told me no and didn't understand where that was coming from. Asked him if they could make hits with the Shillelagh and he also emphased yes, it worked as expected at least towards the end of the Sheridan's life.

My late father worked in military Contracting on the circuit board side and the Sheridan was used as an example of what not to do when designing a circuit board and its mounts for use in a military vehicle. Early Sheridan models had a problem of shaking their circuit boards loose over time, which would kill power to the turret or just take your atgm capabilities offline, essentially just turning it into an odd caliber howitzer, the issue is later fixed. But every company he went to work for used as an example of what not to do with circuit boards and how tough they have to be even for use in ground vehicles.
That was cool. I'm lucky in my career I have come across alot of ex-military co-workers. They always have good stories. Definitely got to get more of this content on this channel.

Love to hear the operators having a 180° opinion of what conventional thought has informed us.
At least 65% of the Sheridan's Raison D'etere was the Shillelagh missile which was as much of an expensive failure as the MBT-70 tank that it was supposed to be used on.
Both were premature concepts that had too much hope and expectations riding on them.
And the 152mm gun was effectively a howitzer: Excessive recoil for the small hull to handle, useless against MBTs, but a godsend for the infantry when faced with entrenched enemy positions.

Vietnam was a brutal place to deploy new systems. The M16 had so many problems at the start, but now variations are still in use.

In the UK, the toy company Cherilea, produced a 1/6th scale M.551 Sheridan tank for use with GI Joe / Action Man action figures, back in the 1970's & 1980's. They were popular for conversion to radio control and I have an RC converted one up in my attic, which I converted back in the 1990's for my son.
A friend of a friend’s dad was a Tiger 1 commander. Basically got to listen to his entire career for four hours. Definitely one of the coolest conversations I’ve ever had.
I would love to see more like this because it's Kinda cool to hear there stories.
