Outstanding! I agree, I think you are spot on! I’ve been playing guitar since I was 15 and I’m 63 now. I’ve been a huge Rush fan since the beginning. I can say with confidence you have every note correct! Thank you so much for your Rush series, I really appreciate your hard work. I understand understand the amount of work and dedication it takes to master a solo like that. Thank you for teaching it to us! I might also add that you have Alex’s tone spot on as well! Excellent job! 😎👍🎸
Kelly, love your tutorials and this one was exceptionally great! Yes, I found Alex’s video a little confusing and now I know why! Being a great player does not mean you’re a great teacher! Thanks for your accurate and detailed lessons!
Excellent breakdown of the solo! I still get just as goofy today about that solo as I did the first time hearing it. Always remains one of my favorites 🎸
I heard Alex say somewhere how he does a bunch of takes, and then pieces them together to get final results. Im guessing when he went back and had to learn his own solos, he simply didnt get into the exacting details you did.. great job with this!
The reason for that, is he would lay down 5 tracks for each song, then Neil and Ged would kick him out of the sound room, and they would pick and mix the parts they liked best. So often, he would end up with a solo that was unnatural and difficult to play, but said he liked that and found it a challenge, actually. He talks about that in the interview w Chris Shifflet- Shredding with Shifflet ✌🏼🎶🎸
This rocks! Much appreciated! I already played most of this correct. Other than the pitch up to the note after the harmonic dive(I played it the other way you showed). Love all these Alex Lifeson videos. Wanting to play Alex’s stuff is why I got into guitar originally.
Extra touch with the final note`s vigorous bend - Alex activates that bend tone to a delay loop which rings in the background while playing first chords of chorus. He did it live too - check ESL live.
This is an easy solo that is a ton of fun to play. I have a tip for the last section after the 17th and 16th bends to play it more efficiently. After you grab that 16th and bend you pull up on the bar and vibroto. You want to try and match the 17th bend. Now instead of the triplets 14, 16, 18 twice then twice 16, 18, 19 on the "e"::: Grab the 14th (e-sting) with your index finger and slide to the 16th then hanmer your 4th finger on the 18th. Now your pinky is free to grab the 19th on the B. (same note as the 14th "e") then 16, 18 on the e-sting again. (this concludes the first triplets) Faster to pick and easier to fret as you are not spreading your fingers a mile apart. Now you are set up to blast the last triplets 16, 18, 19 twice and then 18, 19 and 21 to resolve the solo.
Superb breakdown of a great solo, you've obviously put in a ton of work on this. Thanks very much. I'm also sort of glad that I've only got hardtail guitars with me at the moment so I have a good excuse for the massive discrepancy between my efforts and any recorded version ever! 😉
I'm sure that he did this tutorial many many years later, and over time he changed it by feel. I'm also pretty sure he doesn't sit around thinking about just how he originally played it, and how he was going to teach it properly with regards to the studio version.
😂😂😂 This is hilarious! I bought that Alex tutorial when it first came out years ago! Poor Lersxt was sooo nervous during that lesson that I could barely follow it. Thanks for clearing it all up Kelly! And Lersxt, you’d definitely forgiven! Next time, if we are ever so lucky, perhaps a bit of g.a.ñ.j.ā. ??? 😉 🤣
Nice tutorial. Only correction is at the end he uses a looper on the final note…just looping a fraction of a second. I have an Eventide Time Factor that has a “Repeat” function that emulates this fairly well.
I had tried a version myself. many solos can deviate a bit and still sound good, but this one in particular almost demands that it adheres to the studio version.
I’m an older player who’s reached the dizzying heights of rookie intermediate player. Could I ask that when you tell us the fret numbers please also include the note names when you can? Thanks, and I look forward to seeing your channel explode in popularity.
Lol, your so awesome, your humble, but you sounded 100% correct. I'm a huge Rush fan, I kinda play lead, but I cheat with distortion and an eleven rack. Thank you so much, your an awesome fuckn guitarist my man.🤣
well .. i think Alex just forgot that i mean he is the creator of that awesome solo and probably does not have the time to do it exactly as he did on studio . also you did a great lesson too .
Speaking of not playing things right, on your other vid I watched you weren't playing Finding My Way right. Yeah Alex changes stuff, sometimes a bit, sometimes a lot. Same thing with the Bangkok solo part he demonstrated, it was slightly different.
If I remember correctly, I saw Alex play this live on a guitar with no whammy, which is probably why he's changed up the fingerings and the glissandos into the notes instead of using the bar. Next to EVH, Lerxt was an early Floyd Rose user on those bastardized Strats he played on Waves and Pictures.
@@dbrown6451 How the hell should I know? I've seen them 15 times. When he started getting Gibson support after Vapor Trails, he played lots of stuff on hard-tail Les Pauls. Your "I think so" and my "If I remember correctly" cancel each other out.
@@tomc4271 he played lots of songs on a hard tail that dont require a tremolo such as Tom Sawyer, Witch Hunt, Xanadu, YYZ, Earthshine. But not Limelight.
Exactly. His tutorial also has him fumbling around a lot trying to find notes and frets. It's pretty obvious that he doesn't put a whole lot of time or thought into the note for note teaching aspect of what he's doing. That's for us guys with a hell of a lot more time on our hands to worry about.
I enjoy listening to your guitar tutorials on my long drive to work. Your quirky humour keeps my attention as I learn about my favourite musicians from you “ Alex is playing it wrong”…hilarious. Picked up my guitar as soon as I got home and was already primed to master this solo. Really happy with my progress tonight. Thanks for helping keep me putting in my daily practice time KDA!

Alex is so cool and humble...don't think he would mind what you're doing. He would probably laugh and say yeah...that sounds right.

Awesome job! Sounds great! Music is fluid. That solo is an excellent example!
Your the best guitar teacher on TH-cam! Thanks for all of your hard work Kelly.
Thanks man! Much appreciated.
Thanks for the fyi Kelly. you're tutorials are the best.

very concise and easy to follow break down!!
That was awesome Sir, Thank You. I just purchased RUSH the Complete Scores. I will see how it is in there
I figured it out by ear and agree with all of your points in this video.

YEAH!!!! This is so Awesome!!!😎 I'm sure Alex would enjoy your breakdown since he doesn't exactly know what he played on every song, Nice work👍

@@KellyDeanAllenGuitar I agree. Genious solo. FWIW, I love how you took the time to get it the way he played it on the record👍
Wow!! This video was an eye-opener for me, GREAT job Kelly, thank you! Looking forward to more RUSH lessons, you have the ear. Analog Kid perhaps?? 😉
Your best one yet, Kelly!

It's so hard to believe that it's been a year, since you uploaded this.

Thanks Greg. Yeah, I never mention the notes. Good point.
Studio version was actually 5 different takes edited together. Had to relearn how recreate it for a live performance. It wasn't easy.

how did you dial up the sound? Particularly, the pedals and amp?

Yes Sir ! 👍👍
Hardest part of the solo? Getting back into the rhythm part at the end of the solo when playing with a band.

I dont think so.
He has a guitar with tremolo on every tour so why would he play it on a hard tail bridge?
What tour or concert are you speaking of?

What is your delay setting for this?
I think it's rather long. 650ms I think with 3 or 4 repeats.
I think Al plays it without thinking so when he goes note for note in a tutorial he gets it wrong.

Alex is using a guitar with basic whammy bar to do the lesson
You’re confusing the viewer, just show the studio version, why ping pong back and forth from his video.
Which viewer? I presume you. The rest of us are fine with this tutorial.
