Yup, this song and Mr Blue Sky is why I always ask “whats a song from a band that everyone knows but they don’t know any other songs from that same band?” This song is so much better than Mr Blue Sky.
My boyfriend in 1980 had a Chevy Chevelle SS and we went to church camp in that car in 1980. He jammed this song and Boston, More than a Feeling as we traveled over Transmountain Road in El Paso headed to New Mexico for church camp. I will never forget it. Fast forward to 2012, we reconnected on Facebook and married. He died in 2019 after a double lung transplant gave him 4 extra years of life. He served 22 years in the US Navy. I loved this man from the age of 14 and ELO will aways be about me and Jeffrey Allen Hoagland.
So sorry for your loss. Yes Music has a visceral effect on our feelings. Kind of like scents/aromas... an orange blossom or a loaf of garlic bread. We save those experiences throughout our lives and they surface on their own when looking back gives us a good feeling. I hope you remember the good times fondly, and I wish you peace.♡
I am very sorry for your loss, but it sounds like the years you had together were happy, and that warms my heart. I myself just reconnected with the boyfriend I had in 1980/81 on Facebook 3 months ago, and we are getting engaged soon! Although he's having heart surgery in 4 days, but it's minor and should turn out OK, but it still worries me a lot. These past 3 months have been the happiest of my life, and I don't want it to end just yet!
Jeff Lynne is a fantastic musician, songwriter and producer. Jeff Lynne's ELO will be on Tour this Summer and Fall of 2024 for 32 concerts in North American cities. It's on my bucket list... I already bought my tickets for New York and Toronto.

He didn't stick to one style of music because, after decades, it gets boring. Jeff has done progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock - Pop, New wave, and Disco. Everything he does turns to gold. I'm glad you mentioned his accomplishments as a producer as well. A good producer will promote the talent of the artist they are working with. Some producers seem to push their own agenda and reputation at the expense of the artist . Thank you for not being one of those type of producers Jeff.
Super long post dude but well worth the read, thank you. Having a nostalgia night and ELO came to mind quickly. So many great tunes. Jeff is amazingly talented and influential.

I was 16 and just got my drivers license when this timeless classic was released. I wish I could go back, if only for a day, to be behind the wheel and enjoying ELO on the radio. I will never forget those carefree days.
James, I think we're the same age, because I share your memory and the nostalgia just aches in your chest, doesn't it? Now I understand the meaning of "the good old days". Thank you for this memory.
Me and my mom would listen to ELO on the way to the beach when I was a kid in the 90s and 00s. Unfortunately we lost her exactly 10 years ago today. Came here to get a little dose of nostalgia. Love you mom... You truly were one of the best Edit - I want to say thank you to all of the kind comments and the likes! A little back story on my mom... She loved music and nature more than most. She was known by everyone as a bright light of positivity with a huge smile that would cover her whole face. Unfortunately in the early to mid 00s, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She beat it without hesitation and with a smile on her face. 5 years later it came back. She beat it it, but she didn't have much fight left in her. She was still working and having fun as much as she could but had bad "chemo brain" and would often pass out after being light headed. In 2013, she received the worst possible news. The cancer has spread through her body. She ended up passing about 45 days later in a room filled to the brim with her friends and family and a smile on her face. Love you mom. Miss you like you wouldn't believe. I still tear up everytime I talk about you and I still cry when I tell your backstory.

@314rft: The fact that Jeff was in the process of abandoning the strings on Discovery is partly why I've never liked this album, though the song is pretty good. The other reason is that barring Don't Bring Me Down, the album was incredibly lame pop.

Jeff is one of the most talented musicians to ever take the stage, he will never get the credit he deserves for what he’s done for not only rock but music in general.
He once told a music journalist that he sometimes composed lyrics on the fly, while they were practising the accompaniment. This seems to be one of those songs. He is the only major popular musician I know of, other than Kurt Cobain, who could rapidly fire off a first draft of lyrics and they would be good enough to record without editing, revision, tweaks, or polishing.

I remember that summer. I bought Don't bring me down, also bought My Sharona around same time which melted under my dad's seat in the parking lot it was so hot.
My dad got me the greatest hits CD for christmas, he got me into almost all of the music i listen to today and while listening i just realize how many songs i know purely because of him. Thanks dad, i dont thank you as much as i should for all youve done for me.
Oh yes ! On the album 'Alone in the universe" f.i. he does all vocals and all instruments ! Check out: Jeff Lynne 'mercy. mercy, Official video - you will see him play !
Jeff plays drums, bass guitar, lead guitar, acoustic, piano and he can even play double bass too. He produces, composes and arranges. All self taught. He is one incredible and unique man. To say he is a musical genius is a massive understatement, no one comes close. Love that man to bits!
What yr were you born? Yeah, most of us over 40 know this one, and think about it, it sounds like the band who sang "You've Got a Reason to Live" in 1998.
It's August 2024 and this is still on my play list. I am 54 and thinking about the happiest days of my life and the lonely heart I've had from time to time. Just circumstances beyond my control, but I'm still moving forward. ❤
Jeff an ELO are sadly underated and their music is eternal and pure genius! This is one of those rare bands that we all say! Thank You God for ELO from our hearts!
I remember listening to this song very much when I was a kid but I never found the name of the song all these years. Fast forward now, I finally figured it out. Super underrated song. Probably on my top 20 list of favorite songs.
There's tons of good 21st century music. Heck.. if you like disco, times are good with Franz Ferdinand, Kasabian, and Arcade Fire all rocking the disco beat with their latest albums.
Amanda Galang Hmmm....well, I can't speak for the rest of us "old fogeys", Amanda, but I do still look around at some of the new stuff......I just don't care for much of it. Arcade Fire......meh.....no thanks. It's not like there are absolutely no songs that I like, but, as a general statement, I MUCH MUCH prefer the music that was produced say in the early to mid 90's than what is produced today. Simple as that. If you like a lot of the stuff that's coming out now, that's fine.......I just do not. And, it's not really that sad........REALLY!!.......I'm very happy listening to the music that I choose to listen to........REALLY!!! ;)
*+Amanda Galang* Then again I guess it also depends on the type of music. I would never listen to modern soft rock, I don't even know what that would be. I only like 70's early 80's soft rock like Ambrosia, Al Stewart, Gerry Rafferty... But when it comes to Metal, I grew up on Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, that gets old after a while. So I embrace all kinds of modern Metal, Meshuggah, Gojira, Hacride, Mastodon... At 50 I'm stuck in my ways a lot but in other ways I'm still happily banging my head. \m/
Я первый раз услышал эту песню в УКВ диапазоне примерно в 1983 году и мне удалось её записать! С небольшими помехами и не полностью. Она меня просто потрясла. И ещё большее чудо, вы не поверите, это было в СССР!
These guys had so many great songs and they are so unique. Didn't realise the lead singer was from Birmingham. Really seems like they are from another galaxy.
Im only here because i heard it on the radio yesterday and it wont get out of my head. The more i hear it the more convinced i am its probably one of the most perfect songs of its generation. The harmony of the fellas in "i tell you once more, before i get out the door" is just *chefs kiss*
@@zetetick395 Modern "musicians" I think is what was referred to . If they arent getting radio play they cant be that good. I have yet to hear anything on the radio today that doesnt use all electrical components dont even have to know how to sing on key. Its artificial..
It's still a lot of fun to listen to after the 45+ years that have come and gone. I was 21 when it hit the airwaves in 1979. Great times, Great memories!🎉😎
+Cockney Red The clothes were only as bad as one's individual taste. I refused to wear loon pants and shirts with horribly long collars. I had a nice looking cheesecloth shirt and a pair of cherry red needlecord jeans that were not excessively flared. Did I pull? you bet!!
+Chris McWilliams I resisted the trends then and was repaid at the time by female attention accordingly! As always, the fashion police knew, and still know, bugger all.
I believe he's referring to "a snake in the grass" as in something unseen or hidden meaning "You're looking good, like something no one can see" maybe meaning something only HE can see, or something exclusive THAt, or something dangerous that's unseen
Jeff Lynne, probably one of the most gifted musicians, singer song writers ever. Even Paul McCartney looks up to him. Such a great guy as well. Awesome.

I remember that summer. I bought Don't bring me down, also bought My Sharona around same time which melted under my dad's seat in the parking lot it was so hot.
The year I went into basic in the Army.
FUN STUFF!!
Oh yes! 👍😃 the good 'ole days.
I was six years old then.
Jeff Lynne(ELO) the best overall musician ever and a freaking good producer, singer and songwriter.
As long as there are people like me, we don’t let this wonderful music go down!
My best wishes to all on this 2023! 🥳✌🏼
You said it!👍😎
Right on man👍
Our music will outlive us. Fortunately there are some younger folks who weren't around then who like it and will keep it alive.
Nothing beats the rough mono sound of 1979 analogue video tape.
DGM Mr nothing can beat.
This was one of my sister's favorite songs. Miss you, sis. RIP
I was going to write the same thing about my sister. We carry them in our hearts. Grateful that they're no longer in pain.
My dad got me the greatest hits CD for christmas, he got me into almost all of the music i listen to today and while listening i just realize how many songs i know purely because of him. Thanks dad, i dont thank you as much as i should for all youve done for me.
Rest in peace, Richard Tandy. You guys are awesome and ahead of your time. I have always loved your music!
Another great British group from my home City Birmingham.
really, birmingham? happy my city can do something right
Even black sabbath are from Birmingham 😁
Greetings, from Birmingham USA (Ala-effin-bama)
Vinayak Shivhare How did i not know this?
Tallison Rausch oh ye Birmingham has been outsourced there
The song is one entire hook!
Anybody who has good taste in music!!!!
Best simple drum intro in a rock song, ever.
+synth on a plinth : Yes, great drummer, that Bev ! But as a drummer Jeff Lynne's not half bad himself ......
+Amy Lovendaal Jeff Lynne plays drums?!?
Couldn't agree more !!!
Probably the most innovative band ever.
Really, why?
@@kadehebert201 Arraignments, songwriting, orchestral instruments. I could go on.
Absolutely the best musically ❤
yeah for thier time, Check out the band Gorillaz I love this band but I love Gorillaz 10 times better
When I first heard this song, I had no idea that this came out in 1979. That blew my mind. It sounds so modern and so good.
What yr were you born? Yeah, most of us over 40 know this one, and think about it, it sounds like the band who sang "You've Got a Reason to Live" in 1998.
Are you dumb. This clearly sounds aged 1:02 is classic 80’s
@@nowitsabadtime New Radicals?
No it doesn't. It sounds like something from that time. You trippin
@@nbaoscarrnba don’t you just hate boomer comments like this one?
Temón!!!!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
It's August 2024 and this is still on my play list. I am 54 and thinking about the happiest days of my life and the lonely heart I've had from time to time. Just circumstances beyond my control, but I'm still moving forward. ❤
As long as we have this music in our lives and our hearts, we’ll be fine
Got ya by ten but I'm with you all the way.
58 and still rocking!
"Don't Look Back". "Keep Pushing On".
56 and I’ll never stop listening to the best music #EVER !!!
Jeff Lynne One of the best singer songwriters Britain has ever had . Long may he continue .ELO Fantastic Band
RIP Mr Tandy. A true artist
One of the most savage, fun, original, drum tracks ever produced.
It's a loop from On the run slowed down
The Beatles Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)
ELO is criminally underrated
True! 😎
Because of Guardians (Mr Blue Sky) I found this song haha
At least for this song.
listen to face the music. the whole album. the backwards talking is music irreversible but time is not turn back
WE Never underrated them 😊
Jeff an ELO are sadly underated and their music is eternal and pure genius! This is one of those rare bands that we all say! Thank You God for ELO from our hearts!
don't forget about Kelly Groucutt
ELO is not underrated, they are in the rrhof and jeff is in songwriting hall of fame.
All the best music is from the late 60's, the 70,s and the early 80's
Don't bring me down Bruce. God I love ELO
Don't bring me down....groos.😊
Bruce and GROOS😅
Still listening October 2024 from Limassol.
Was a kid listening to this, still love it today.
Great era of time!
The best rock band from the seventies ❤❤
THEIR where way to many to count .
I remember listening to this song very much when I was a kid but I never found the name of the song all these years. Fast forward now, I finally figured it out. Super underrated song. Probably on my top 20 list of favorite songs.
Oh baby, this song takes me back! You see this 21st Century?!.....THIS is what GOOD music sounds like!!!!!!!!!
There's tons of good 21st century music. Heck.. if you like disco, times are good with Franz Ferdinand, Kasabian, and Arcade Fire all rocking the disco beat with their latest albums.
Bartonovich Nickel unfortunately people arent exposed enough to new music because we are rarely advertised the good stuff ie. arcade fire
*+Amanda Galang* Plus most older people get stuck in their ways.
\m/
😊 listening to music that was actually worth listening to 😊
Certamente,si!!!
Well said. 70s even 80s had some incredible music!
65 years old and they're still jamming my brains out !
Ditto.
Go ahead 🤟
Yes! Back in day this was my get up & party song!!! Can’t no more but sure wish I was able to dance to it! 👏👏👏👏😊❤️👍🏼
Тоже самое....
Same.
I am listening um 2024! Fantástic band
1:04 The most satisfying part of this whole song 😌😄
Nah. 2:30 "...you're lookin' good just like a snake in the grass". Reminds me of my first girlfriend, who broke my heart in the worst possible way
I found this by looking around Spotify, and man is it so good. 60s-90s music is my favorite type of music. Nothing compares to these classics.
You are so right!
1967 till the end of 1980 For me
one of the best songs ever made
Yoo are so right
This masterpiece song makes it never old
one of the most underrated bands -)
Yves Daems no they aren’t, they’re massive in England
"What happened to the girl I used to know?" ... Is someone disillusioned here? Love how ELO made this a happy sounding song. A masterpiece.
Went to their concert at Los Angeles for my birthday and it was the BEST!
Johana Rodriguez same here, but in Detroit
I remember as a teenager skating to this song at the skating rink, such wonderful memories.
Я первый раз услышал эту песню в УКВ диапазоне примерно в 1983 году и мне удалось её записать! С небольшими помехами и не полностью. Она меня просто потрясла. И ещё большее чудо, вы не поверите, это было в СССР!
I'm happy that you heard it!
WOW! What a blast from the past! I loved this song when I was a teenager in the 70s! Thanks for this video!
Welcome to the new decade Electric Light Orchestra! This is where you belong... the future.
These guys had so many great songs and they are so unique. Didn't realise the lead singer was from Birmingham. Really seems like they are from another galaxy.
Don't say the music is underrated. To those of us that know it, it's top of the line. Everybody that doesn't appreciate it can kick the can.
Ones posting that word arent too bright to look at the word and figure its meaning
Just sheep from social media
I was lucky enough to see ELO perform this live twice. One of my most favorite bands. Thanks, Jeff!👍🙂
Im only here because i heard it on the radio yesterday and it wont get out of my head. The more i hear it the more convinced i am its probably one of the most perfect songs of its generation. The harmony of the fellas in "i tell you once more, before i get out the door" is just *chefs kiss*
You should play Can't Get It Out of My Head next.
bars.
Ok
@@janicesands2169 facts tho, this is a bop
I heard another song by them on a commercial, and just thought about this great one!!!
A classic of 70's
Back when Musicians actually had talent.
And actually played musical instruments, as opposed to the Rapper/Crappers who utter vile, vulgar and violent 'lyrics' to a half-ass back beat!
Still plenty of those. They just aren't spoonfed to you.
I know a lot of talented musicians
The world is still full of great music
you just have to seek it out
like you used to
when you found this band
@@zetetick395 Modern "musicians" I think is what was referred to .
If they arent getting radio play they cant be that good.
I have yet to hear anything on the radio today that doesnt use all electrical components dont even have to know how to sing on key.
Its artificial..
I envy people who were in their 20s, 30s in the 80s, probably the greatest time ever, this tune is legendary.
Me too only was able to have kid fun til the 90's😂
I was in my 20s in the late 1980s. I turned 20 years old in 1987, I was 12 years old in 1979 when this song was released.
1939-1945 💀
I graduated from high school in

@@trinajska Right here! 68 years young. I grew up listening to the most iconic music era, ever! Oh, so many memories and stories to tell 😚
I love ELO....my parents had it playing in the car when I was young...I have the lyrics engraved in my brain
It's still a lot of fun to listen to after the 45+ years that have come and gone. I was 21 when it hit the airwaves in 1979. Great times, Great memories!🎉😎
My dad had this in an 8 track. Use to play the heck out of it in his Delta 88. R.I.P. dad. 😔
My son is 5 now. This is still his favorite song.
what a cool son, he deserves some bread
Thanks for the update lol
Well thank you for the update
Your son has great taste. Pretty sure he won't bring you down.
David Lewis haha!!!!!
The best FEEL GOOD music! ELO has nothing but great songs!
'Calling America' is a pretty bad song, haha
Haven't heard this in years, great song!
Damn good song, timeless classic.
brought it down?
U dam right
Here here. !!!!
One of my favorite bands of all time!
That is the most 70's thing I've seen in ages and I mean that in a great way. :)
+Chris McWilliams only the clothes were not great in the 70's,everything else was historically relevant.
Cockney Red I kind of recall I only six by the end of the 70's so my memory might be a bit vague. :)
+Cockney Red The clothes were only as bad as one's individual taste. I refused to wear loon pants and shirts with horribly long collars. I had a nice looking cheesecloth shirt and a pair of cherry red needlecord jeans that were not excessively flared. Did I pull? you bet!!
Robert Morgan True I grew up in the 80's and never once wore parachute pants. Resist the trends you will be glad you did later. :)
+Chris McWilliams I resisted the trends then and was repaid at the time by female attention accordingly! As always, the fashion police knew, and still know, bugger all.
Bellissima ❤❤❤❤❤
Who's dancing with me in 2024? Great classic hit❤
You're looking good
just like a snake in the grass
That's one weird ass lyric, but I have always liked it
deBebbler no no no no no no no...
I believe he's referring to "a snake in the grass"
as in something unseen or hidden
meaning "You're looking good, like something no one can see"
maybe meaning something only HE can see, or something exclusive
THAt, or something dangerous that's unseen

ELO's heavy production never bothered me. Rock on, Jeff and co.

Jeff Lynne, probably one of the most gifted musicians, singer song writers ever. Even Paul McCartney looks up to him. Such a great guy as well. Awesome.

Been running through the music of my youth and I’m glad to see so many like me and decades younger listening to the same great music!
Wow, that´s what I call an amazing song! E.L.O. were absolute masters.
Jeff's one of the best of the best. Great singer.
