This was the first major studio film directed by Gareth Edwards, who went on to direct "Star Wars: Rogue One" and "The Creator" and has now been picked to direct the next "Jurassic Park" movie. Before that, his first real show as a director was the quite decent 2010 movie "Monsters", which is about a world where huge alien monsters (not kaiju size, but still big) have infested the area surrounding the American-Mexican border. It follows two Americans as they re-enter the U.S. from Mexico and was pretty notable for having a budget of just $500K since a lot of specifics were just improvised as the actors and crew were on the road, hiring locals who just happened to be there for smaller roles and often not even bothering getting permits for filming, and Edwards, who had a background as a VFX artist, doing all the special effect shots by himself using off-the-shelf software.
Looking back at this movie, I do see a lot of similarities in how it and "Monsters" were filmed, with the slowly building tension, the focus on human relationships in a world being attacked by monsters and treating the monsters with actual respect and fear so they have a lot more impact when they do appear than a lot of blockbusters do now with their animated creatures. I do kind of like the next movie, "King of the Monsters", more as a popcorn movie, but I am starting to appreciate this one more in light of how current blockbusters just take special effects for granted and film so much against huge green screens

Well, Godzilla did end up saving the city, but he was more interested in killing the MUTOs to stop them overrunning the planet than specifically saving the humans. He didn't *aim* to kill humans, but he also didn't completely *not* kill humans. I mean yeah he dodged ships and stuff whenever he could, but that tidal wave that killed a lot of people was him (unintentionally, sure, but it was him), and he killed people on the bridge too (though in that case they did shoot first).

I’m glad you really liked the movie. It’s one of my favorite Godzilla movies even with its polarizing reception. Obviously you’re gonna be watching the other movies in the MonsterVerse that come after this one but if you’re interested in some of the other films made by the original creators/owners Toho you can start anywhere since Godzilla has been such a versatile character over the 70 years. Obviously the Original 1954 film is important and if you want some more serious Godzilla movies but have Godzilla as a villain, The original, GMK, Shin Godzilla, and the recent Godzilla Minus One are all standouts. And of course there’s movies where he’s a hero and everything in between.

Nothing portray that better than the Godzilla Minus One (the movie that came out in december). For Legendary, Godzilla is more of protector of the order of nature. The next movie in your Monsterverse adventure is Kong - Skull Island, amazing reinvention of the King Kong story. (After that it's Godzilla - King of the Monsters and last but not least Godzilla vs Kong). The latest movie Godzilla x Kong - The New Empire is coming out in theaters on March 29th. I love this movie, it's too dark but doesn't matter, perfect to watch at night
Also love the Mutos, specially the male design, my favorite one from all the other kaijus (kinda felt bad for them, just trying to continue their species, cruel yet natural and common)
The bus driver was sick, we need to talk more about him bro probably tried to save himself, yet managed to save a whole bunch of kids from being on the bridge that literaly got torn down second after
I like to think that Godzilla probably didn't care about humans in this movie yet, but that he was inteligent enough to know that they were helping him, cause in later movies we see him being more careful with ships around him, unlike here where he just pushes them away, and so cause of that him begining to, not trust us but understand that he can do what he has to as the alpha, acept humans help but not threat us, since he later knew what we were capable of, as well as us coming to the same conclusion, a woking yet tense relationship

The bomb was an automatic bomb. It was manual. That's why he was on the boat to detonate it himself. Only way to get a nuc near the mutos. Automatic would have been shut down. EMP was the mutos power.

They weren’t expecting the radiation to kill the muto’s, but the sheer force of the explosion. The radiation was just meant to lure them in. The general even says this bomb is at least hundreds of times more powerful than the one they tried to kill Godzilla with before

A point regarding the nuclear blast. Movie logic is "nuclear weapons use radiation" when in reality a nuclear initiation. Specifically a fusion initiation (as it is a thermal nuclear device) the radiation is a byproduct. What does the damage is the massive shockwave of compressed air and heat. Then there's the hard xrays which to be fair doesn't matter if you eat radiation, we drink water we still get squished when hit by a tsunami, we eat potatoes, doesn't stop a potato launced from a potato cannon taking your head off.
Imagine pointing a laser at a plant and expecting it to phogosynthise and not just burst into flames

Something with the actors that played Quicksilver and Wand on Age of Ultron, playing husband & wife here in Godzilla; if you really think about and have the comic knowledge, there is a take/universe where Quicksilver and Wanda are into some “Sweet Home Alabama” stuff👀

Before you watch King of the Monsters, a few tidbits regarding more expanded Godzilla lore.
The Big 5 are Godzilla himself, Mothra (his greatest ally), Rodan (sometimes enemy, but usually ally), Ghidorah (his greatest enemy), and MechaGodzilla (another great enemy). King of the Monsters is a love letter to fans of the old rubber suit and puppet movies, often pulling from classic leit motifs for each of the Kaiju/Titans (each one has their own musical theme) and a lot of lore from the old movies.
And yes, the Kaiju/Titans absolutely are intelligent, feeling creatures. Their individual personalities get to shine even more as the Monsterverse movies continue.

Great reaction!,..welcome to the monsterverse,..welcome new fan of Godzilla,..your right about the female MUTO having expressions, when she called for help from her mate, ..but the male also had a moment of expression, in Honolulu, when he first sees Godzilla, the military jet is exploding into pieces, bouncing along the tarmac, and as Godzilla walks up, the MUTO realizes, hears him,.swings around, and I swear he has a look of surprise and shock, his jaw drops, he flares out his wings, takes stance, legs spread apart, like some one ready to rumble,.I so love that scene,.both him and Godzilla are sizing each other up,,..and when he charged up, and delivered his atomic breath,.so loved your reaction, knew you'd be surprised, by that, been seeing that since the 1960's, never gets old, always thrilling,..do keep going, enjoy,..Godspeed, Peace ✌

THESE Kaiju (more generally called MUTOs in this universe and, later,Titans) aren't THAT old, they come from before the dinosaurs' era,the Permian period,250 million years ago, although there's still a debate between fans on which source to believe to between all the MonsterVerse content.
And the MUTOs could understand what the nuke was and find it easily because it contained their food, radiation,so it only makes sense an animal can smell and locate its food

To answer the radiation question, some fruit like pinapple actually have a reaction to UV. Different kinds of radiation play a huge role in the animal world, we just dont fully understand it. For instance, platypus shows up bluish under a UV light

The one thing that put me offbthis film was how it basically relied on holywood nuclear physics to work. It's like armegedon with astrophysics every few mjnuets it's nope that's not how radiation works, nope that wouldn't happen, nope nope nope.
For example the "contaminated zone" after 10 years, all the radioactive iodine would be gone (that decays by half every week) and the caesium would be reduced to about 6% which are the ones that are going to kill you. The isotopes that last 1000s of years... yeah that's no danger
A good example of this is the chernobyl exclusion zone. The plant was still operational with the staff living on the outskirts of pripyat until 2005, and people workingbthere until 2016 decommissioning the site. Heck civilians have lived in the zone for nearly 40 years and the place is a nature reserve due animals thriving there

HAHO (high altitude high opening) and HALO (high altitude low opening) are two related, but vastly different concepts. HAHO, contrary to popular opinion, is just as dangerous as HALO jumping, and actually requires a different kind of skillset on the part of the operator because you open almost immediately after leaving the aircraft, and you can travel for tens of miles in the air. It's basically extremely complicated hang-gliding with (oftentimes) zero visiblity. HALO is used when you need a quick insertion with minimal time on target. It's just as dangerous, but in a different way. You're traveling at terminal velocity (120+mph) from 30,000 feet and just PRAYING that you don't hit anything on the way down before you open your chutes.

    Random thoughts.
Military equipment is shielded to EMP blasts like the Muto's used. (nuclear explosions produce the effect)
Nuclear material even when shielded produces heat and gamma rays pass through a lot of materials.
Funny story from a friend who was an artilleryman in Germany for the US army.
There are small scale nuclear artillery shells.
To mess with the new guys they would put them in the over overnight so they were warm to the touch like the real ones to scare them. They would also manhandle the crates marked nuclear to mess with the new guys too.
You would be surprised just how many nukes have been detonated in history.
Two in war yes. 2500+ since they were invented.
I suggest watching A Time-Lapse Map of Every Nuclear Explosion Since 1945 - by Isao Hashimoto.
    It will blow your mind.
