The three Aberdeen players in that team, Miller, McLeish and Leighton, were also in the Aberdeen team that beat Real Madrid 2-1 the year before to win the Cup Winners Cup
Both teams qualified to the WC 86. Spain as the Group 7 winner and Scotland (thanks to a late penalty goal in Wales by Cooper) played a sort of strange playoff against Australia and qualified as well. Regards.
It is great watching old games from 80s. But it is also kind of heartbreaking! The 3-0 skelping from Morocco at the 98 World Cup was on my 17th birthday, I grew up watching Scotland teams that qualified regularly, and listening to my dad talk about the Scotland teams of the 70s and early 80s. If someone had said to me after that Morocco game 'We wont be back here for 20 years', I would have dismissed it as nonsense. You dont have to be that much younger than me to have no memory of Scotland at World Cups or Euros, which is gutting!!
I was a university student in Malaysia at the time. Read about Scotland's win in the following day's noon tabloid (The Malay Mail). It mentioned the brilliant Dalglish goal! Sad that Scotland somehow did not get as far as I believe they should have in the 1986 WC.
Beat Yugoslavia 6-1 in the September, Iceland 3-0 in October and Spain 3-1 in November. All home games and Yugoslavia was a friendly but still a good goals return
I was at this game, What a night!! Although, Spain had a reputation for under performing away from home in those days. I recall they lost heavily to away Wales in the same campaign - Mark Hughes scoring a scissor kick volley from the 18 yard line.
Was on the terrace behind the goals where Kenny scored that fantastic goal, when you used to get over 100,000 at the games. The following year was the saddest time after a vctory when Big Jock died in Cardiff.
Those were the days. Only now realise the guy that scored for Spain was the animal that took Maradona out the game when he was playing for Barca. Glad he didn't get Dalglish's shirt after the game.
innit27, I couldnt remember the specifics of the entire campaign. I do remember that we did not play as well as this again. It was downhill from this Spain game. A few great results followed by us struggling badly.
Next game was Spain away return fixture in Feb 85. Lost 0-1 which wasnt great but no disgrace and shouldnt have caused undue problem for qualification. The crisis came in the next game losing 0-1 at home to Wales in March 85. The 1-0 win in Iceland in the next game, scoring with 5 minutes to go and Jim Leighton saving a penalty proved pivotal
Spain was not a top team at that time. Still, I think the Bosman Affair damaged the smaller leagues (Scotland, Portugal, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Czech Rep, Russia) and classical teams same as Benfica, Porto, Anderlecht, Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord, Spartak Moscow, Sparta Praga, Red Star Belgrade, Steaua Bucharest, Marseille and the average teams like Scotland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Wales, Russia, Poland, Romania, Rep, Czech...
@davemonzon2 Only saw the highlights of this Game but for what i saw and what i heard Scotland played absolute top class that night. I remember listening to this on the Radio no bloody sky back then.
@innit27 And we get to play them again soon.Lets hope its a good omen. And we can make the next world cup.I will not hold my breath just yet though.I think our group will be tight. All the teams can beat each other in it.Even Macadonia might prove to be dark horces. They managed to beat us away from home.Serbia had Vidic retiring,so that is good news for us.Croatia have never beaten us before. So lets try and keep that up.Belguim have good players to.And will be a challenge.Taffs are improving now 2
I'm getting even MORE depressed haha. Back then, they LIVED for football. It was our culture. Thousands would turn up to see a Scottish club compete against a European team. They were OBSESSED.
Kelly14UK I know I'm English but I would love to see Scotland do well at football as they did before, having lots of great players playing both north and south of the border. You may have watched this documentary from 1986 just after the world cup called only a game the story of scottish football, I can remember people like Sir Matt Busby and others saying at the time that they don't know how Scotland would cope without football. I would argue this was the last good Scottish international team. I'm 50 now, so I've seen a few. The last 20 years and more, to be frank, have been pretty pathetic.

We were standing right in line behind Dalglish when he went on his jog through the Spanish defence for the 3rd goal - what a night it was !!
The three Aberdeen players in that team, Miller, McLeish and Leighton, were also in the Aberdeen team that beat Real Madrid 2-1 the year before to win the Cup Winners Cup
I was at this match - the amazing this is, no-one regarded the result as a shock.

As usual, we got drawn in the "Group of Death" - W.Germany, Denmark & Uruguay
The good old days
I want Scotland to return to the world championships. I have always had admiration and sympathy for them. Greetings from Argentina.
We are so much worse now I wish Scotland was as good as it used to be
Ffs we were so good dalglish was taking corners
that kenny goal was a well rehearsed training scheme. kenny nailed it
What a difference a few years makes!! At the end of the game the Spanish players were begging to swap King Kenny’s shirt.
aye, he could, but Levein would play him at left back in a 5-5-0 formation.
Eran otros tiempos. Que recuerdos.🧛♂️🧛♀️🦇🦇🦇
Lastima de el primer gol de Escocia. La parada de Arconada fue brutal, milagrosa.
amazing Scotland
The game before this we beat Yugoslavia something like 5-1 at Hampden. Its the best Scottish team i remember.
Beat Yugoslavia 6-1 in the September, Iceland 3-0 in October and Spain 3-1 in November. All home games and Yugoslavia was a friendly but still a good goals return

The Butcher of Bilbao was his nickname. I doubt there is an England fan that would feel sorry for Maradona.
How could Kenny give him THAT shirt after reaching the international goalscoring landmark?
