Hi Devlin, great content thanks for the video. Can you advise how you can differentiate yourself from other IDs? Particularly when posting on freelance websites for work.
Hi Ashley, thanks for the positive feedback! Creating a strong portfolio is a great way to differentiate yourself from the competition (especially on freelance websites). Social proof (like reviews and testimonials) will also really help you seem more trustworthy to potential clients. Finally, you can specialize in a specific area (such as storyboarding, visual design, complex development, etc.). Highlighting really good, specific deliverables on a portfolio will help you stand out for those types of opportunities.
An insightful article, once again! Thank you Devlin. Regarding creating a portfolio, if I am using free versions of the ID tools for creating sample projects, will I be able to showcase them once the trial ends?
Dear Devlin thanks for your great videos. I have two masters degree, one is MS in IDDE, second one is MEd in Educational Technology. Because of the small kids I haven't work and 0 experience. I have been applying to the jobs but I did not get any response to my applications. I don't have much about the specifics of jobs, for example HTML, Adobe, Visio etc. (each job wants different things) I don't know what to do?
Thanks Devlin for this one, I had similar questions rolling in my mind when I read the job descriptions. Since, you mentioned LinkedIn, I want to know your view point on doing LinkedIn Learning, should all those learnings done through LL be mentioned on one’s LinkedIn profile?
Hi Rozina! Glad that this video could help clear things up. I remember that this advice made me feel better several years ago when I was trying to break into the field :) And regarding LI Learning, I don't think it could hurt to include some of the courses on your profile. Maybe just the most relevant ones? It probably won't make a huge different, but I can see how it would show you're devoted to developing yourself. So why not? :)
Hi Devlin, Your videos are so extremely helpful! I am graduating with a master's degree in ID and did an ID internship this past summer but I am getting rejected from everything I am applying to, which is asking for a max of 3 years of experience (also got rejected after a second interview from the only place that called me). I don't even think anyone is looking at my portfolio (I have it linked in my resume). Any tips? I reached out to a couple of recruiters on LinkedIn and one referred me which is great but I am struggling to figure out what I'm doing wrong.
Hey hey! Good question and sorry to hear that you haven’t been seeing great results in the market yet. Have you requested much feedback on your portfolio and resume? The problem likely lies with one of those. Feel free to request help / feedback in our community: www.devlinpeck.com/id
Good question! Storyline is more popular in the corporate space and a bit easier to use. If you’ve used Captivate, then Storyline should be easy for you to pick up 😃
Hi, Devlin... Thanks for the info... I am a teacher of 20 years and I have a Master's degree in Education Technology. Also, I am highly skilled in Photoshop, web development, and music production. I am highly interested in ID. Even though my degree is not in ID, does my Ed. Tech degree (oh, and also my other skills) give me an advantage as I move towards getting a full time position in ID?
Hi, that's wonderful! Your teaching experience and web & design skills will serve you really well in the ID space. So yes, it will give you a huge advantage! I would suggest learning an authoring tool (like Storyline) and showing off all of your skills in an ID-focused portfolio. That plus some resume tweaks would surely help you land a corporate ID role :)
Thanks Devlin for this useful video. A question, as aspirants like ID, Do I need to know about tools I have seen like articulate, Adobe creative, etc and what is the level you should suggest me? Thanks in advance!
Hi Cynthia! I would definitely recommend learning Articulate Storyline (that seems to be one of the most important tools for landing a corporate opportunity right now), and getting familiar with some tools in the Adobe Creative Cloud is a good idea. I have a video about Adobe Illustrator for eLearning and how to use Adobe XD to mock up eLearning screens. I'd suggest watching both of those and getting comfortable doing what I do there. And I'd also suggest getting as good with Storyline as you are able to. Dive in and start building out some interactions. II have a TH-cam video about which order to learn SL functionality in, and I also have a series of live workshops that get quite complex, so maybe jump into those once you feel comfortable.
Hi Devlin. I'm new to your channel and have a question. I wanted to get storyline 360 to try out before my final interview this Thursday just so I can say that I am familiar with it. I've only used my previous companies own built LMS system. That was a 3 month temp job. I have recently gotten myself familiar with Rise 360 briefly and recently. I found it quite easy to use. Currently building something on that to show from Rise 360. I've watched videos on youtube about storyline 360 and it seems to have a similar feel to PPT which I know how to use quite well. I know they want me to use a system without templates/from scratch and storyline does this. However because I am on a mac I cannot afford parallels to get storyline so I can only educate myself on that vie online and youtube videos. I just hope it's not going to be too much of an issue when and if they consider me. Have people got a job where they haven't used storyline but have used other LMS and Rise? I have passed the first and second stage of the interview and have a 3rd and last stage for the ID job this Thursday. They will ask me more about my portfolio and tools.
Hi! Can you get a Parallels trial? I think you will def want to practice with the tool and maybe build a small project with it. And most corporate jobs do want you to know Storyline
@@DevlinPeckYT The problem is that I may not have time to do that as I am finishing one on rise to show them. This company are hiring 2 instructional designers for the first time. Its a new role to them. They are hiring for after the new year so I could practice with a trial version of parallels till then but I worry its still not enough even if its a new role. Do you think it is a complete loss in my circumstance?
Hi Devon, I have really been enjoying watching your videos. Which software is the most important to have to land a corporate job. I have plenty of experience working with LMS, video creation, and PPT. Which other software should I spend my time learning?
Hi Craig. Good question. Hands down Articulate Storyline like Poke Grant suggested. It’s very familiar to PowerPoint but has some added features to make things interactive. I’d definitely suggest focusing your efforts on learning that tool next if you’d goal is to become hireable ASAP 😊
Hi Lukis, good question! I have a full text guide about this. I will update it and record a video about it some time this year :D. Here's the link: www.devlinpeck.com/posts/best-laptops-instructional-design

Hi Devlin, I've worked as a content writer for 4 years in Ed tech in India. I've had an opportunity to brainstorm the ideas for instructional design for 1+ year bereft using any software/tool. It feels scary to explore the unknown with my circumstances, but I will implement what you spoke about. I will update you when I complete my career transition. Thanks!
Hi Shubham! Writing experience will serve you very well in the instructional design space. And yes, the uncertainty is scary! But we will be happy to help how we can :D
Can you still make money with no college?? I have been at my job for 10 years and my current manager wants to move me in this role. I want this job please help me.
There are definitely IDs in this field who do not have any college degrees! A bachelor's will help (and it may be more difficult to land roles without a bachelor's degree), but it is not required for some roles. Showing off your skillset will take you a long way!
Hi there , I'm from Technical background. If I'm planning to switch to ID how long it might take to prepare and be ready for interview? I just have 3 months with me. Is this sufficient?
Thanks Devlin, for your time. So just 1 last thing I've to ask. So to start off with is it better to be a freelancer for atleast 6 months and then try a full time job? Or directly going through some course and trying for jobs is better?
@@peachysnapple Awh, sorry to hear that you aren’t having much luck. Can you share more about what you’ve tried and why you feel like you aren’t having much luck? And I have seen a couple of negative posts on the subreddit lately. Honestly, it goes in cycles. After several positive posts, some people feel like it doesn’t reflect their experience and they want to be heard. I really wouldn’t let the individual stories get you down too much. Overall there is a lot of opportunity in this field and it only seems to be growing. Breaking in can feel really daunting with no experience, but if you optimize your application materials, I am sure that you will be eligible for the right opportunities.
So I’ve been applying to ID, and learning and development internships. I’ve gotten one rejection and the rest I haven’t heard anything from. I also had a friend refer me to an ID position but they wanted 3 years + experience and I don’t think it made it past scanners. I work in education but I’m not a teacher. I’m finishing my masters this year and I’d really like a summer internship so I can get some experience.
@@peachysnapple I see! I wouldn’t feel too discouraged. I think that most internships come via word of mouth or connections within a university (at least, that’s what I’ve seen in the past). What about spending the summer to work on your skill set / build a portfolio? That will give you much more credibility for internships and FT jobs alike.
That’s definitely my goal! I’m taking three classes this summer and going to redo my portfolio. I mostly just have infographics, interactive images and a training video up. Is there anything else you recommend? I’m using a Mac but I’m going to get windows installed so I can play with articulate.

I hop teachers are having better luck getting ID jobs. I have been laid off two years like many experienced IDs and can not figure out the problem .
Do you have a solid portfolio? That makes all the difference! And sorry to hear they you’ve been having a hard time…I hope the content can help.
An insightful article, once again! Thank you Devlin. Regarding creating a portfolio, if I am using free versions of the ID tools for creating sample projects, will I be able to showcase them once the trial ends?
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching, Pooja. And yes, with the Articulate 360 you can publish projects without any restrictions during the trial.
Awesome video! Could you suggest a few active communities of IDs?
Thank you , You always give great tips
You’re welcome, Ahmed. Thanks for watching the video 😃
(each job wants different things)
I don't know what to do?
Hi, thanks for reaching out! Do you have a portfolio? That will likely help you much more than any formal education :D
I remember that this advice made me feel better several years ago when I was trying to break into the field :)
And regarding LI Learning, I don't think it could hurt to include some of the courses on your profile. Maybe just the most relevant ones? It probably won't make a huge different, but I can see how it would show you're devoted to developing yourself. So why not? :)
I appreciate all your videos, can I ask where I can apply as ID thank you
Thanks so much! And check out sites like Indeed or other job listings...there are plenty of new ID roles posted every day :)
Hi Devlin,
Your videos are so extremely helpful!
Which one is best captivate or storyline??I have done short projects in captivate ,will that get counted?
Good question! Storyline is more popular in the corporate space and a bit easier to use. If you’ve used Captivate, then Storyline should be easy for you to pick up 😃
Where can I find examples of great ID portfolios so I know what I should aim to build for myself?
Check out the portfolio showcase! 😁 www.devlinpeck.com/showcase
Thank you for the advice! I'm going to start learning Storyline this week... I'm excited for what the future holds...
@@realman4sho we’re excited for you! And feel free to join us in the community if you have not already 😃 www.devlinpeck.com/id
Most excellent, my friend!
Thank you for watching!
@@DevlinPeckYT Thanks for kindle suggestion. I am writing down and continuing my learning process. I will follow up your videos. Best regards!
@@cynthiareid6416 Great! Sounds good :)
This title is unfortunate as it requires so much knowledge and skills to design EFFECTIVE instruction.
Thanks for commenting! There’s a lot of content on this channel about the day-to-day skills & knowledge if that’s what you’re looking for 😃
Where to find the portfolio video?
Good question! You can look up "Devlin peck portfolio" here on TH-cam, and the new "How to Design Effective eLearning" playlist will help as well :D
I stumbled on your videos on how to write learning objectives and the one on ID. Is there an email address that one reach you through?
Thank you!!!!
You’re very welcome!
Hi Devon, I have really been enjoying watching your videos. Which software is the most important to have to land a corporate job. I have plenty of experience working with LMS, video creation, and PPT. Which other software should I spend my time learning?
Articulate Storyline
Hi Craig. Good question. Hands down Articulate Storyline like Poke Grant suggested. It’s very familiar to PowerPoint but has some added features to make things interactive. I’d definitely suggest focusing your efforts on learning that tool next if you’d goal is to become hireable ASAP 😊
Im about update my laptop to suite my goal of being an Instructional Designer. What specs/applications do I need to look for when buying a laptop?
Hi Lukis, good question! I have a full text guide about this. I will update it and record a video about it some time this year :D. Here's the link: www.devlinpeck.com/posts/best-laptops-instructional-design
I'm a school adviser for 9 years .do you think this major is related to ID?
Where is the best place to find small projects/freelance work?
Once you build your portfolio there are a few different ways to go about it. I go over a few suggestions in this video: th-cam.com/video/3Z4xkAz4yrI/w-d-xo.html
Hope it helps!
How to build a portfolio? I have a diploma in Instructional Designing and M.A. in Education but I am a fresher without any experience.
Great question! Check out this video to learn more: th-cam.com/video/p-tBgyt3mBg/w-d-xo.html
@@DevlinPeckYT thank you so much. Your videos are helpful.
@@shefalimallya9261 You're so welcome :D
I have completed master degree in communications but 8 have no experience can I join this course ...
Hi there , I'm from Technical background. If I'm planning to switch to ID how long it might take to prepare and be ready for interview?
I just have 3 months with me. Is this sufficient?
Good question! Six months is around the average from what I’ve seen, but some people make it happen in as little as 3 😃 (not common though)
Thanks Devlin, for your time. So just 1 last thing I've to ask. So to start off with is it better to be a freelancer for atleast 6 months and then try a full time job? Or directly going through some course and trying for jobs is better?
The most exp i have is making personal google slides 😭 i want to get a certificate in ID.
I can't even get anyone to look at my portfolio. I'm finishing my Masters in ID in the fall. Not even an internship =(
And the instructional design subreddit is so negative and depressing lately
I am in India i done course in instructional designer but still i didn't get job . Is there any portal for getting job special in
I worked assistant professor job in 4 year and i am planning to join id job could u suggest develop the id
Hi I was a teacher with pre primary and primary experience of 9 years. Recently have taken a break of 6 months. I am 45 years old. I would like to transition to ID career. At this age is it possible. I am from India
It's definitely possible! We've worked with IDs who are transitioning into the field post-retirement or are on their 3rd or 4th careers. If it's a good fit for you, it's never too late to start.
Love from India
Thanks so much! I appreciate the support 😃
Making a comment here to hear from anyone working in this field without ANY degree. In the real world, have you gotten a job as an instructional designer with out ANY degree.
Hey Devlin is there any chance where animation industry experience will be counted while applying to instructional designer role ??
