I have not been able to find a source on composing a shrine that was as detailed & helpful as yours! Thank you for making this practice accessible to those of us who lack cultural context.
Hi Louie, thanks for letting us know this was helpful to you! You're so young to become a Buddhist! Are your parents helping you on this path? We wish you all happiness!
i learned the dorje and bell mantras and mudras and i arranged the offerings like here....but i added an 8th bowl for OM SHABDA AH HUM but i did it unconciously, not on purpose...is it better not to have the 8th bowl? It has rice in it with a little bell.
I was apprehensive about starting this video because of the length (We can tell I'll be working on slowing down and being in the moment) But it was well worth the time and kept my attention throughout the lecture. I thank you for taking the time to make this. It is most helpful for a beginner like me.
thank you for providing such informative information to help us with our practice of the Dhamma. It makes me so happy to see videos like yours because I see it as a kinder, gentler and happier part of the internet where kind and generous people like you provide an invaluable service to us. Thank you again! With Metta, -Sebastiano
I have a mandala Gohonzon and I was told I have to scroll it take it out of my Altar and put paper in my mouth to not breath on it and also recite whole lotus sutra when I put it in my new home
We got eight diff stupa. So, which one more proper to consider as Buddha stupa? Actually all phenomenon are empty nature but the way you two explain the development of once practice toward Buddha, Dharma, n Sanga is really effective n simple way of explanation. Thanks for enlighten us. 🙏🙏🙏
what shall a Tibetan Buddhist say - recitate when to do the morning Puja? Is "Buddha has explained the origin of all the things that are based on a cause or condition. Their cessation, he also explained. It is the great doctrine shaman." Correct?
I have a Laughing Buddha, where should I put it? Also it's the style of the Buddha something important, like, can I have a chinese style Buddha in my shrine instead of a tibetan style Buddha?
Ben Morris the style of Buddha statue certainly doesn't matter. What only ever matters is exercising wisdom (Sanskrit: prajñā, Pāli: paññā) and cultivating that wisdom via having the right view and right intention (from the Buddha's Noble Eightfold Path). Sometimes - especially in this age wherein we often find ourselves travelling, for example - we may not actually have a statue or image of the Buddha, but we can still very much set up an altar without these things because when wisdom is cultivated, we can even keep an altar in front of which we can merely visualise the Buddha and it is still as substantial an altar as any other. I hope that helps=)
Hello this might be a long shot but I was wondering if you would know where I could go to find a mentor for my husband who is now practicing Buddhism . He is currently incarcerated and I would love to find him a mentor.
Jennifer, I am sorry, this reply might come too late, and I am not sure if my answer will help. Just take it as my personal opinion... Firstly, i am glad to note that your are trying to find a mentor for your husband, and also my prise and admiration for your husband's intention to practice the Dharma. To find a mentor, it very much depends on the geographical location of the institution... If in a Buddhist country like Thailand, there are regular Dharma class or sessions. Elsewhere, it very much depends on the availability of the dharma teachers, either monastics or layperson, or the cooperation between the institution and the Buddhist community outside, also the regulation or policies of the respective countries. We do find monks, nuns or lay Buddhist who devote their time for people in incarceration. I am from Malaysia, a Muslim country, there are people like this; from what I know, there are also groups of people like that in the US, UK or some Western countries too. You may try to google, or find out from the Buddhist community around you. If you can't find one, the next best thing you can do is to get him some Dharma books... For this, getting books with content which suits him is very important. Things to consider might be: 1.At which level he is in, 2. He's more inclined towards which tradition (as we know, basically, there are 3 main "vehicles" or "yana" in Buddhism - The Hinayana or Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana. They are all Buddhism, the same, but each may differs in their approaches, emphasis towards liberation ), 3. Is he a a "reasoning person", an inquisitive person or a "feeling" person. 4. Was he already started with some kind of practice (deity/yidam or mantra?) In Buddhism, there is place for everyone, if that someone is willing and ready...the Buddha had among Him disciples who were king, royalties, beggars, murderers, ordinary folks, prostitute, scholar, skeptics...But the Buddha knows the how and when. For us, if the "correct match" between (we and the teacher/ dharma) can be found, marvelous! It helps if you can have someone to refer to, there are also several ways for you to obtain Dharma books for free (legally) or without incurring much cost. Well, quite a lengthy reply... I hope it helps a little. (If you need further clarification, my email address: chu.tingsoon@gmail.com I hope, you and your husband can find the correct match on the path towards liberation. Best of luck.
Just a thought I had watching this, most people won't know what you mean by a Masters Degree in Madyamika, its a term outside the experience of newcomers. Most people that know the term would have seen a shrine.
I have seen a lot of private Shrines and the have both Dalai Lama and their own teacher / Lama pictures on it. Even very high Lamas say its very ok to do that. So I don't understand why you say its not ok?
Lobsang Wangdu sorry, I must have seen wrong in your video..so sorry...I will look again. I just don't hear what you say 19:00 in this video about put picture on the altar.... Namaskar
Good to know for novice Buddhists, but the way the water bowls (ting) were lined was misleading. There is always 4 bowls lamp (chime) and another 3 water bowls. That is how the seven water bowls are placed before the shrine and not 3 bowls lamp and then 4 bowls. I would appreciate a correction in your video. The 7 bowls represent (from your left) as follows: Water for drinking (Argham) Water for washing (Padyam) Flowers (Pushpe) Incense (Dhupe) Light: candlelight, butterlamps or fire (Aloke) Perfume (Ghande) Food (Naividya) Sound and Music (Shabda) references: buddhaweekly.com/buddhist-water-bowl-offerings-as-an-antidote-to-attachment/ garudashop.com/collections/7-water-offering-bowls-or-yonchap
monks are human beings trying to follow Buddha's path. They are not BUDDHA yet. Buddhism has many facet, many path, that all leads to one destination. Buddhist never say "death to non-believers." As long as you are kind in everyday life, kind to all living creatures, you will be considered a good buddhist, it doesnt matter whether you believe in Jesus, Allah, shiva etc or you believe in none. Many buddhist consider mother Teresa a saint, Mahatma Gandhi a great soul. B Buddhist believe in holy water Amritsar🙏
Tibetan cutural praying system are nice but tibetan cultural most monks and nuns are nonveg alcoholic married and living luxury life. This kind of bad buddhist culture was made by their kings in lhasa china . Buddha said if you don't have any food to eat then you can eat meat. Only wearing maroon clothes and reading tibetan books is not buddhism. This comment is from the land of buddha lumbini Nepal south Asia.
I'm a beginner Buddhist who would like to focus on Kwan Yin and White Tara. Your video is so informative!

We're so happy this helped you!
Is it wrong to have a tangka of Manjushri or Tara above the statue of the Buddha? I have seen it like that in dharma centers.
15.40 dried flower is Tsampa ka, not tsa kusha

I don't have enough space. Can I place 5 bowls for offering instead of 7?

for Stupa you can use three rocks stacked on each other
Interesting. If you visualize them as the stupa that could be fine. Thank you!
Does it matter in which the shrine face? Thank you!
I have a mandala Gohonzon and I was told I have to scroll it take it out of my Altar and put paper in my mouth to not breath on it and also recite whole lotus sutra when I put it in my new home

+Christina Toussaint You are so very welcome Christina. It's our pleasure!
Hi what kind of fabric should I use to cover the shrine? Also where or what country of origin should I not get my items from?
Hi Christina -- we responded on your Facebook question :-)
Ok unfortunately I do not see a response. I did get the response on the statue. Just any thoughts on the shrine items and fabric would be great
Sorry, meant that we responded on the comments for Week 1 on the site.
I only have 5 cups . Can I offer 4 cups of water & 1 cup of rice for incense?
Or the water bowls have to be 3 or 7 ?
Did you find an answer?
@@varnas284 unfortunately, not yet
Very nice 👍
Thank you for this detailed explanation.
Yo are so very welcome. It is our pleasure!

Can you have 2 shrines? One inside and one outside?
I have a question for you guys, you could put Jay emperor on your Buddhist shrine or no....
Let me know if this could be possible...
Sorry, we don’t understand. Can you explain what or who is Jay emperor? May you be well.
Would it be possible to make a shrine outside on a covered porch
We got eight diff stupa.
So, which one more proper to consider as Buddha stupa?
Actually all phenomenon are empty nature but the way you two explain the development of once practice toward Buddha, Dharma, n Sanga is really effective n simple way of explanation.
Thanks for enlighten us.
🙏🙏🙏
I mean the Buddha's mind or wisdom.
is it ok that my altar is just have a picture of buddha
Yes, of course!
Is there a preferred color for the shrine? Should it all be one color, or is multiple okay?
Is it ok to to mix and match wrathful deities and passive deities all together in one shrine room? Or is it better to have two separate shrine rooms?
thank you
+Adam Heap It's our pleasure, Adam!
I found my buddah thrown on a road, and gave it a well place to emerge.
May I know where did you purchase this offering bowl set? I am looking for offering bowls that will not turn green - oxidize. Thanks!
Yes, go to the bottom of this page, and click on "himalayan bowls" link: www.yowangdu.com/yowangdu-tibetan-culture-products-and-services.html

Hi, hm the laughing Buddha is not typically put on a Tibetan shrine, but it’s all really your choice.
Dose it matter what style of buddha statue you have on your shrine ?
Ben Morris If it is Buddha Shakyamuni then it should be okay. What kind did you have in mind.
I have a Thai/khmer style resting shakyamuni

Agreed with Sebastiano 786, Ben. If your intention is good you are fine.
Yab bum include but yab bum is wrathful gods and Buddha the wrathful is dangerous
Your Buddha statue is very nice. Where can I buy similar? Is it 12 inches high? Do it have some filling? Price?
Hi, sorry it was a gift to us from our friend in Nepal, so we don't know. The next time we see him we will try to find out more. :-)
ok thanks.

Tibetan Buddhist monk has wife ???
Some do depending on sect, like married Orthodox priests.
Not all lamas (teachers) are monks and not all monks are teachers. Mr. Wangdu is not a monk. Read more, talk less.
The Dalai Lama is a Buddhist monk. That means no marriage, no sex. How come you have a wife ???
