The downsides of OB12 are: - underpowered CPU which results in very slow program changes and perceptible latency and slight choking when using unison - lack of low-end which needs to be boosted with the onboard EQ in order for the synth to start sounding warm - narrow sweet spots (yes, it can sound great, but can also sound really, really bad if you don't learn its pitfalls) - the filter doesn't self-oscillate and track the keyboard properly - the reverb is mostly useless - the delay is mono - there is an aftertouch bug that never got fixed - fm mostly sounds rubbish - overdrive is mostly useless - the top-end sounds digital and is too bright (again, EQ to the rescue) The great things about it are: - the chorus sounds awesome - dual filters and frequency offset - mixable waveforms - separate pitch envelope - powerful ring mod sound - one of the best user interfaces - ribbon controller
It's a fine VA synth if you are into VA synths but it sounds nothing like an Oberheim and it's really buggy. It's supposed to have some patch morph feature that sure never did anything on mine. The manual is terrible. The screens were going out on them within a year of them being released, etc. BUT, it sure does look nice. Honestly if you're going to buy a VA synth you would be way better off with a Waldorf or Access Virus or an Alesis Ion. The MS2000 is alright for the price but those are also all crapping out and Korg stopped having replacement boards a long time ago.
Great video! I was a keyboard dept. manager back then and sold this. Didn’t sell as well as the Nord Lead, JP-8000, Z1 or Supernova. I used to own an OB-8; didn’t care for this at the time. Fast forward to now; I think the OB12 sounds great. You did an excellent demo here, and I agree, it’s a monster. Viscount released an OB3/OB5 series of clonewheel instruments back then that sounded very good. Re: the OB12, it’s interesting to see how tastes change with the passing of time, and also, aided by hearing an excellent demo.
I remember these were being heavily discounted in Turnkey Soho soundhouse for £500 in 2002, I nearly bought one but got an MS2000 instead. Its amazing the high prices they sell for now, I think the Oberheim name has a lot to do with it.
Got mine from Soundhouse love it and still have it. Still trying to master it. Got it for £350 Brand New at the time and was so happy it was a monster !
Thanks Chris for taking the time to make this video! I have a couple of VAs already (Waldorf Q, JP8000), so may not be in the market for one. However, it’s fun just to hear your opinions on it and have a deeper look at the “infamous” OB-12 :)
For what it’s worth, in the comments section of the matrix 1000 vs obx8 there is this guy’s true story about Tom Oberheim refusing to sign his matrix1000 as it was not considered a real Oberheim. In the meantime you can also check the ob6 vs ms2000, prologue vs ms2000 by the excellent mr tuna music. Also the an1x vs obx8 video. Now time for a proper ob12 vs ob6 vs obx8 video 🤤
I wanted to like this . The looks are decent . Like the layout , screen and features . However it is just so hard to try and be impressed and enjoy this . The new OB-X8 and the vintage ones just ... sound so much better . No other way to put it. I couldn’t enjoy this generic digital early 2000s thin basic tone of this . I tried. But glad to see this video .
Ob 12 sound great... But like many others Va of the time, have some limit on "modular" type sound... Extreme modulation and "strange" things create noise, crack and other disliked effects... The only Va that can do extremly at the time is the ms2000, and virus b-c, but not at ms2000 level... But the Ob12 is very musical, great pads, bass arps... Filter don't do well at peak resonances, like other va at the time...
Great summary, couldn’t agree more! While the OB-12 didn’t/doesn’t really suit me personally, I have one thing to say: Nothing else sounds quite like it... which is always a good thing, whether it’s to ones liking or not.
This is a great video, thanks for posting. This synth clearly has a lot of capabilities, a tremendous workflow and some wonderful sounds. I was checking this out when I saw one for sale near me at a good price with mild damage to the display. I don't really have the money or the space but, my temptations aside, it was a great opportunity to learn a little more about a very cool synth out there that I knew very little about.

Played with one once. With I had bought it. Was going for something like $800. Like others said at the time, it didn't sound "Oberheim" to me. Of course now we know why. But for being a VA synth, it simply has a great sound of its own, and a really nice hardware interface for programming.
Mine needs a repair, never letting it go. Hope it's just a new lithium battery or something. I bought this aged 21 with money from a 5 grand loan that was used to go backpacking North America.
I had one once. I miss it for the sheer speed regarding programming. The thing I don't miss is that the 2 oscillators are always starting in sync. That is they start from zero, both of them. So there is no offset like a true analog where the waveforms from the oscillators are constantly running. The OB12 oscillators funktion like the ones on a sampler. The audio outputs are strangely slow. That is, if you want a REALLY fast and snappy attack you will not get it. But if you connect the SPDIF you can hear how very fast the envelopes are. Really fast and snappy. Cheers!
I have one and new it sounded great and in some aspects does sound like an Oberhiem I should know I own an OBX-A, OB-8 and a few cream face Matrix 1000. Thanks for bringing back this sound it’s a great instrument.
In and of itself, it actually sounds pretty solid. Not sure if I’d be able to fit one in between the Nord Lead 2X and Korg MS2K I have, but it sounds pretty decent.
First time i’m hearing this synth ever. It doesn’t sound that great. Actually, hearing the patches and his playing around with them, it sounds kinda shitty and uninteresting. However, for me any synth with a capable sound generator inside and that quantity of hands-on controls will always be valid. Expression is the most important thing.
I bought one around 2000 or 2001, and I soon realized it wasn't a real Oberheim. But I didn't care, I liked it a lot. The only whish I had was that all the fader and poti settings would automatically jump to them of the loaded sound, that would be awesome. I love that synth and should use it more often again
Nice VA. Would be great for trance. I had no idea that Oberheim were not behind this. Interesting. I think they did this synth a discredit by putting that name on it. It sets up a wrong set of expectations for it's sound.
Exactly. That's the major issue with this synth. Should have never been marketed as an Oberheim. Probably would have fared much better properly branded as a Viscount synth with a unique name. Expectations define far too much, and in this case, the Oberheim expectation nearly ruined the synth's chance for any kind of respect.
I owned this synth but regrettably sold it, in favor of microkorg which was more spacious friendly for my needs. It has a midrange charm, but it lacks punch in bass and lead patches. But really excels on pads and lfo sounds, especially in multi mode.
Because of stupidity and people badmouthing things carelessly this went under my radar until now when the prices have risen. I would get just for these classic pads and interesting filter.
It's been revered for its pads by many. My issue is I can find a use for anything. The cheapest pedals, microphones, synths, etc. will find their way into/onto something.

I actually would not sell my dark star because of it's odd grizzly sound, never heard anything like it, this ob12 sounds like standard digital VA fodder.. like Alexis ion... Some sort of korg VAs, that common 90s- 2000s VA sounds.. gross.. but it does have a beautiful interface.. I guess if you want those old va pad sounds, it's what you want, but who wants that anymore?
It sounds like an oberheim. But like an oberheim if they ever made a 12 voice but they didnt. I wonder if it does 6 voice splits? Splits would be good. It's got that gritty sandy sound to it is sounds great and its blue. I would want to buy o e if I could find o e. 😁
I bought this back in 2011 or 2012. Absolutely horrible nasal sounding synth. I can't even express enough how awful it sounds. An Alesis Ion blows the OB12 away. I have owned 3 OBxa's and 1 OB8 as well. It's a sin to put the Oberheim name on this.
I also have a Blofeld, and I prefer that over the OB 12. Dollar for dollar, a Blofeld is pretty hard to top. There's a reason it's still in production 15 years after its launch.
@@tomcruze7898 well yes, he shows clearly how the synth falls apart under high dsp load... Super wonky. I remember when the tr-8s came out from Roland, you could crap out the dsp by moving too many faders at once.... If a synth cannot perform it's routines within the right cycles' length of time, weird things happen. Midi clock? Lololol
This is a quirky synth with a low-fi gritty sound - like the VA equivalent of the Waldorf XT, because of the user interface its quick to experiment with and find its sweet and not so sweet spots, its raw immediacy makes it similar to another cheap low-fi oddity the Studiologic Sledge. Its made by humans, I couldnt care less about the brand name/oberheim fixation. Im not parting with mine even though Ive had every so called classic such as the Jupiter 8, Prophet 5, Arp 2600 at some time or another
The downsides of OB12 are:
- underpowered CPU which results in very slow program changes and perceptible latency and slight choking when using unison
- lack of low-end which needs to be boosted with the onboard EQ in order for the synth to start sounding warm
- narrow sweet spots (yes, it can sound great, but can also sound really, really bad if you don't learn its pitfalls)
- the filter doesn't self-oscillate and track the keyboard properly
- the reverb is mostly useless
- the delay is mono
- there is an aftertouch bug that never got fixed
- fm mostly sounds rubbish
- overdrive is mostly useless
- the top-end sounds digital and is too bright (again, EQ to the rescue)
The great things about it are:
- the chorus sounds awesome
- dual filters and frequency offset
- mixable waveforms
- separate pitch envelope
- powerful ring mod sound
- one of the best user interfaces
- ribbon controller

I don't like the sound of the Synth... I've had an access virus b, it had a similar sound and I hated it. Sold it for good money!
We want Zack !
It sounds like an oberheim. But like an oberheim if they ever made a 12 voice but they didnt. I wonder if it does 6 voice splits? Splits would be good. It's got that gritty sandy sound to it is sounds great and its blue. I would want to buy o e if I could find o e. 😁
It has no relationship with Oberheims at all. So apparently if you slap an Oberheim logo on a VA it magically "sounds like an Oberheim".
it does not sound like an oberheim.
Sounds like oberheim?
If you think this sounds like an Oberheim, I don't know what to say...
I think it sounds like a virtual analog version of an oberheim. Not exactly like an oberheim but close.
If you order your Oberheim from whish...
So basically, it's a big blue Blofeld.
(Bloberheim?)
I also have a Blofeld, and I prefer that over the OB 12. Dollar for dollar, a Blofeld is pretty hard to top. There's a reason it's still in production 15 years after its launch.

Sounds like a soundtrack of a Wes Craven 90s Horror movie
It's a bad synth. Stop making excuses.
I remember demoing one at the time and it was janky. I walked away and so should you. Nord killed this.
You should check out Jexus playing it.
Midi clock? Lololol
Weakest VA of it’s time.
It is not an oberheim it is not an Oberheim, stop calling it like such. Trashing the name and pedigree of Mr. Tom Oberheim
OK Karen calm your titties
Had to stop watching. Your nervous tick of constantly pushing on the bridge of your glasses was irritating.
