My wife and I booked for late August. I am so excited!!! I am a huge Star Wars fan and I love the history as well! It definitely looks like an adventure!
It's such an amazing place! If it's going to rain on the day you go... make sure you have good rain gear and a change of clothes for when you get back.
Wow that was an amazing video guys 👍well done, great to see you back in my home place Kilkenny, skelligs is a very special place indeed, I’ve been out to them several times with my jetski buddies. Enjoy your time in Ireland 🇮🇪 keep the videos coming.
Our driver was in shock and awe that we were able to see Skellig Michael from the Ring of Kerry. We stopped many times for photos because the opportunity to view from the safety of dry land comes once in a blue moon. Winds off the ocean have been intense this week making sightseeing a hit or miss situation. Don’t think I would risk life or limb on the water when the weather was that dicey. The Star Wars production team had to build a set of Skellig Michael nearby on the mainland because the weather gods were so against them while they were trying to film causing huge delays. Gotta give you credit, your no tenderfoot. I’ve been on night tuna fishing excursions that were less dangerous than what you experienced in this video. We love you guys, please stay safe!
Lovely work, Melissa and Larry Skywalker - your videos make me realise how beautiful my own country is and proud to be Irish. It would be hard to pick a dry day for Skellig Michel but ye made the best with what was thrown at you. Isnt it crazy to think how some mad Irish monks in the 6th century thought "hmmm you know where would be a great place to live". I am enjoying watching your journey in Ireland and look forward to seeing the other places you have visited around the world once I get Ireland done. Thanks for a great video and a few laughs along the way.
I just love the 🎶 music fair plé to ye I was there as a Fearless kid back in the 60ties I do remember the Exhilaration I felt on reaching the beehive huts... Thanks for reminding me how it is...
It's worth remembering the island of Skellig Michael is 7 miles off Ireland in the Atlantic Ocean and is only accessible for a short time during the Summer months each year, even then bad weather (not unusual in Ireland)will close the access to the island. When you do get to the island you're then faced with a somewhat daunting climb, as you saw in the video, to get to the top, strong winds are not unusual, but if you happen to get good weather and the sun shines on you, oh is it worth it. Failing that you could always travel to the North East of the country to Co. Meath and visit the 5000 year old Passage Tomb, Newgrange.
In case you want to plan your own Skellig Michael adventure, we booked our Skellig Landing Tour with Skellig Coast Adventures skelligcoastadventures.ie/ aboard Skellig Walker. And for more details on the journey, here's Melissa's blog post about the adventure: chrisplusmelissa.com/skellig-michael-irelands-sharp-rock-in-the-sea-that-you-can-hike/
Good call on getting on the biggest boat available. A friend and I went out to the Skelligs on a boat that had no cover, called the Lady Clare. We were like two drowned rats dripping all over a restaurant we went to after in order to get some hot food into us. I felt sick but thankfully didn't throw up. There was a woman puking into a bucket a few feet away from us. Never again!
@@chrisplusmelissa When we got back to the place we were staying in the woman running it half screamed because we looked so soaked and bedraggled. I have never been so cold, wet and miserable in all my life! Glad you two are enjoying another stay here in Ireland, even if the weather is living up to it's reputation :)
Imagine the monks used to row out to those islands in tiny boats. Apparently their diet was mostly shellfish and seaweed. One can only imagine how hardy you would have to be to survive that environment.
There diet was supposed to be poor alright. They did analysis of their bones and found that their diet was very poor.I mean they couldn't even have grown potatoes because they didn't arrive into ireland for centuries after they left the island
As a UNESCO síte, the Skelligs are very sacred. The bird population is very unique and only exists because of the absence of rodents. There were very mixed feelings about it being used as a film location as this, and the ensuant litter, posed a huge risk to its delicate eco balance. All visitors should take great care to bear in this mind if visiting this sacred space.
I've just finished a terrific novel about these incredible islands. It imagines the first Monks to land and how they built the Monastery. It is called Haven by Emma Donaghue. Highly recommended it is an astonishing piece of imagination.
Hi! The weather was horrible... so we took our time... I think it was maybe an hour at most. Also, we were recording too. I would think you can make it to the top in 30 minutes on a nice day.
We are booked for July! Was the filming location where Luke was off-limits due to the weather or is it off limits at all time now? Looks like it’s behind a fence.
Awesome video! I'm going there in 6 days with my wife. I hope the weather allows us to visit the island! We're a little scared about the descent tho, does it feel dangerous?
It kinda felt dangerous on the day we were there. There are places that a fall could have been bad. Just take it slow and concentrate on each step on the way down... that's what we did.
I hope the weather is grand for you! It's a thrilling experience even when it's not. We went out with Skellig Coast Adventures on Skellig Walker -- the most covered boat that we saw on the water. I believe they're building another as big and as covered for this upcoming season. skelligcoastadventures.ie/
@@chrisplusmelissa absolutely stunning, we were so lucky. Our boat guide told us our fleet was the first allowed out in a week because the wind had been so rowdy in the days beforehand. I'm sorry your guys' trip was so wet, at least it's the classic Irish experience! 😶🌫
The guys who run the boats trip out make a killing. It used to be a wee bit of money, but it is how much now? The day I went out was so bad. Puked all my great salmon and eggs out that I had Ann and Ian's.

Hello from Catholic Ireland. St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

The climb up looked treacherous but I can’t even imagine coming back down. I think I’d just have to live out my days on the top of Skelig.
My (Chris) legs were sore for 2 days afterwards... each step down was slow and calculated.
@@JannJohnstone There was a particularly steep part on the climb down and I butt slid down 😆

A prayer which can never be recited enough. The island of Mont St.Michel, in France, is also named after St.Michael.
