    the brand stuff is (generally) pure marketing. Many moons ago I worked in a dip factory - the "brand" ($3.30) and the "home brand" ($1.90) literally came from the same batch - just used different tubs (and yet so many people I knew at the time swore black and blue that the branded stuff tasted far superior.....)

    • @ThatJohnstonLife
      @ThatJohnstonLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very rarely go for the branded because of this fact

    The Aldi and other supermarket home brands usually come out of the same factories as the "brand" products. That's why Aldi packaging which looks so similar to the "name brand" doesn't get into copyright trouble - it's the name brand selling to Aldi as a contractor.

    • @ThatJohnstonLife

      Yeah, this is the same as the UK too. All cereal bars come out of 1 factory in Wales

    Cordial! Squash is a vege or the drink from the pub! Dry Ginger Ale is what is mixed with CC, Ginger Beer is sweeter and a 'cool drink' (do you call them soda?)

      Ha ha. Will have to change my vocabulary again! Ah, thanks for the tip, wasn't sure whether it was ginger ale or ginger beer. The Mrs probably prefers it sweeter anyway

    Woollies (well most supermarkets) use special lights to make their fruit/vege, deli, fish and meat appear brighter. Apparently when they went to vacuum sealed packaging on the meat sales fell because the thicker plastic was acting like a light filter and dulling its appearance. Also don't always think the sale sticker is the best price, its just to catch your eye.

    • @brilliantbutblue
      @brilliantbutblue 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah agree with you on the "special" sticker can be misleading👍

      @@ThatJohnstonLife Example is Powerade 600mL = $3.65, but the 1L is $2.50. BUT the 1L is on the bottom shelf almost out of sight and the 600mL up at eye level. Even on sale typically the 600mL is more expensive. There's a fair bit of this, you just need to look.

    We also have full isles of “drinks” in 🇨🇦 and here we call it juice not squash. Cordial to us is an fruity alcoholic beverage to be sipped!!

    Hi I'm a Aussie & a tip I've found when grocery shopping just shop the catolgue specials & you'll save money especially in Woolies & coles. Cheese last longer from ALDI as most in Woolies say once open use by 7 days where ALDI says use by 14days once open. Not sure if a NQR -not quite right suppermarket near you but it's great to get discounted food too as they close to use by date or best before date. Even reject shop has some good bargains with pantry food they stock like pasta & pasta sauce, soup etc. Tip too read all back of packets as some have a certain time they should be eaten by once open & some products even same thing have longer time self time at different shops like I said above with cheese. Hope this helps, I've saved alot money with shopping around on catalogue specials, ALDI shopping & NQR suppermarket. Welcome to Australia too.

    Some FYIs :)
    Aldi's (BLACKSTONE brand) Honey and Soy Chicken Chips/Crisps seem to be and taste exactly the same as the Red Rock Deli Honey and Soy Chicken Chips. But are like about $2.50 and in a larger bag. Have not tried the other Aldi flavours.
    Also the Aldi stores that sell alcohol, there's Leo beer (from Thailand) that is really nice and refreshing (with less burping lol). Their non-name copies of famous spirits are not too bad either for a good price (their cider is nice too).
    Oh. If you find the Caffe Aurora Italian Blend coffee beans or grounded for about $10 for a kilo bag, is a definitely worth a try! In Coles or Woollies.
    Cheers and best wishes from Perth!

    This video is making me feel better about the cost of food. From the looks of it, it is comparable to Canadian prices so i guess it wint be a shock to us when we get there. I must say youre giving us ideas of what to buy when we get to Australia. I also cannot believed they have dino pasta and bunny marshmallows soooo cool. Closest IGA to me is around 15kms, local shops to me 1.5km so the 'offset' of car costs/time is not worth it and we have a great butcher in the local Woolies complex here, won a heap of awards especially for sausages. Walkerston Country Meats.

    Hey i watched all your moving videos and i think you’re lucky that you could love during corona and experience the freedom there. 😊
    When you book hotels for quarantine, is there a government approved hotel list to choose from?
    2. Since you’re not citizen on whichever grounds did you get an exemption?

    • @ThatJohnstonLife
      @ThatJohnstonLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. You don't book a hotel. You are assigned one by the police when you land and are taken there on a coach. You have no contact with anyone other than on your plane until you leave quarantine. We have permanent residency so we do not need exemption as all permanent residents and citizens are allowed to enter the country

    Having lived on and off in both countries, I would be interested in your views on some everyday essential service. First Health Care. A young UK doctor has given her impressions of both systems See: th-cam.com/video/OhqELWPSQ_s/w-d-xo.html - though from a GPs point of view it gives a really good overview. She says she earns less (surprising as hospital consultants always top the Tax Office list of the highest paid wage earners in Australia) but the job is more interesting and patients have more choice and quicker access to more services. But unless they have kids or on a benefit they are charged for more. The second one is schools - and as a teacher you actually might not want to comment. At secondary level, it appears less kids go to State Schools because they are large numbers of religious schools. These are often lower fee, private schools as they still get government funding. Even posh GPS private schools (equivalents of Stowe, Westminster etc) get Government funding which seems different to UK so even their fees are lower. Historically I think this came about because Irish immigrants wanted Catholic Schools and the Church successfully argued they were saving the Government money so should be subsidised - this opened it up to every variety of faith group.

      We've found medicare to be good so far for what we've needed. Can't really comment on the schools yet. Will have all that to worry about as our daughter gets older

Also if you have Woolies car insurance you get 10% off a shop once a month 😁 I'm a Brit, you get used to differences, I shop mostly at Aldi then once a month do a big shop at Woolies and save my rewards points for Xmas ..... Just my way 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

      Tomato sauce!!! NAH!.... In Qld, you have a meat pie with 'black' sauce (Worcestershire Sauce) and *mushy peas* Tomato sauce is mainly a 'southern' thing.
