Well, the problem with the 406 Coupe is that it was a straight-up reusal of the Ferrari 456 design elements. Subjectively, an astonishing looking car. Objectively, lazy and unoriginal design.

Doug, although entertaining, built a career bitching about cars. I wouldn't take him too seriously most of the time.
Having that said, yes, it's not a very good gearbox. I had a similar system in an Alfa. The guy is right. Buy the regular auto which is just a good old ZF unit BMW, Jag, Rolls, Aston, Bentley etc use.
I've driven one of those, and as Doug says, it really ruins the whole car. It is jerky, slow and not too reliable. I would believe tho the quattroporte is quite a nice car with a regular automatic transmission. The interior might be a bit flimsy yes, but the engine is magnificent and it sounds great. And it's actually not that bad to drive.
The Maserati isn’t affordable if you have to get a specialist to check it over for £300, especially if you have to get him to look at a few.

A Maserati quattroporte doesn't offer much more than an Alfa 164 or 166 especially if you get a 3.2 litre 166. They will be cheaper to run.....though not cheap to run. 166 was not Pininfarina either so technically doesn't count.
Imagine comparing a Maserati 400hp 4.2 V8 with an Alfa 166 with 220HP 😂😂😂
@@davidtate9769 The Alfa makes far more sense. Where are you going to use your 400 bhp anyway, and the cost of spares is astronomic on the Maserati. There is no better engine than the Alfa V6 and its affordable to maintain. It also sounds better than the Maserati V8 too.

I owned a 2000 306 GTi-6, in that colour. It drove really well but after 10 years, the rest of the car like mentioned in the video fell to pieces. The seats literally crumbled and the final straw was going to open the door and the door handle fell to pieces in my hand and i couldn't open the door...Never buying a French car again.
You have big expectations from a small and cheap car. 10 years of ownership with a broken door handle and not good seats seems actually pretty decent. After those 10 years, I can imagine a new door handle being 5 bucks and the whole saloon like a 50 quid. And a friendly piece of advice - next time you break an interior door handle, just put your window down and open the door with the exterior handle. Good luck!
@@simmcho 1. It wasn't a cheap car, not in this country. 2. What car do you drive where after 10 years the car seats falling apart and door handle falling off being "pretty good" ??? I can only assume you had something worse and even more terrible than a French car. 3. It wasn't an interior door handle, it was an exterior one. Good luck trying to wind the window down with the door locked and shut. 4. Here is a friendly piece of advice, go and take a long walk off a short plank! :)
@@willski12 thanks for sending me in the park. :) Whatever price you paid for it, it's still a cheap car. And from what I am reading in your comments, you haven't taken care for it. I have a Ford Fiesta MK3 1993, third owner, it was a car which everybody looked after, and I have no issue AT ALL, after nearly 30 years of everyday driving. And this is a pretty cheap and cheaply build as well Ford. I have a much newer, still really old though:Ddd daily, but a higher end model, and I can't complain.
In other words... just forget that Maserati ever existed. EVER.

If you are a cheapskate and only have £3000 to spend on a car, you probably can't afford to run these cars. They're all cheap for a reason, they're all ancient, unreliable and could practically cost as much again to just to keep on the road every year.

I believe, the 306 Gti6 here in this video was not penned by Pinin farina, the 306 Cabriolet was a Pinin Farina design, as was the 205CTI Cabriolet, and the 406 Coupe was a Pinin Farina design.

Pininfarina... when a design house is so good, durability doesn't matter. The worst part of all their beautiful work, is their marque was never emblazoned on anything reliable.
Never mind checking out the car, if you're serious about buying a Maserati, you need to get a specialist to look at your head, because you're clearly mad.
Car Wizard has just bought a Maserati Levante for his missus. He's no fool and knows a good car when he sees one.
A Peugeot that will break down frequently, an Alfa Romeo that will break down... um... frequently; and a Maserati that can be relied on one hundred percent... to break down frequently *and* expensively.
Cheapskate and maserati dont belong together.
I would not buy any of those, the Peugeot is rubbish, I would rather have 206. Alfa romeo is unreliable rust bucket and used Maserati is like 37000€ and would be absolute nightmare to insure and crazy expensive to repair and maintain. And as a Italian blender it will need repairs often.

That said I bought a z4 and I love it and I didn't need to roll the dice to see if it would bankrupt me and it sounds about 80% as good as a Busso.
