  • Thinking of installing a solar power system on your house? Watch a proper solar installation so you can learn the difference between a high-quality, diligent solar install compared to a cheap, rushed one.
Often people come to us with two quotes asking for advice. Both quotes use the same brand of solar panel and inverter, but one quote is much cheaper (and is not from a SolarQuotes-referred installer).
They ask: "Surely all installations are the same? So why shouldn't I go with the cheaper quote?".
It can be quite hard to explain the difference between a good and bad installation over the phone. So we made this video demonstration a gold-class installation, while pointing out some of the installation shortcuts that are taken by the dirt-cheap subcontractors.

Extremely well done and professional! The separate safety switches for each circuit is something I have installed in any house I have owned, and particularly good in a rental house! No more fencing wire in old fuses!!! Brilliantly designed system and of a quality that will last many years! ( ex-sparky)

This is exactly what I needed to see! Looking at a 6.6kw system at the moment (obtained quotes via solarquotes) this reminded me of all the questions I need to tick off before I go ahead and sign off. Power optimiser consideration a big one as we have numerous shade issues, and great to see an aesthetically pleasing install too.

Hi, Just on that ' consumption meter' that you're about to install. To view the graph on it , do you have to go to that inside sub mains box to look at it, or does it have ' wifi enabled' to view it from your phone or computer, or the like?

Show us how you do ace event tile roof.
Every time I let a bozo onto my roof I end up with water leaks and cracked tiles. When they walk around they hear the tiles “snap” but they just keep walking hoping no-one noticed. It you drill a hole in a cement tile you have ruined it………it may not snap today, but in a months time it’s a different story. If you let them they will puncture your sarking and , again, pretend they nothings wrong!
Your team may be better, but whenever you sub out the installation, tho Bozos let you down
I have not yet seen a suitable fixing system for tiles.
A lot of people in my area have tiled roofs and they are holding off because if this industry wide deficiency!!!

That's the main reason I went with ground racking. Happened to have room for it.
Just spent around 45000€ on a nice tiled roof. It will last for a very looooong time- unless someone has a mad day with a drill and an angle grinder to out some panels on it. Some of the things on TH-cam make me sick looking at it. People are screwing up perfect roofs and they will pay for it in the future.
There are actually decent functioning systems from some tile producers. The stones already have all the right notches for racking and the passthrough stones etc. But this cheaper to have a go with ana angle grinder...
Also cleaning. Give the panels a decade or two sitting on the roof. Even without any panels, there will be moss and lichens. These gather moisture for freeze cycling in winter and there will be damage over time. I guess the moss doesn't grow under the panels or something because there's no way to clean under it. How is biocide chemicals supposed to get under the panels?
Planned life of 25-30 years- there may be a surprise waiting under those panels even with the best racking. First some cracked stones. Than the subroof membrane. First time you see any moisture inside, the woodframe is already done with. And that can happen all under the panels out of anybodys sight for decades.
No thanks. Ground frame sounds cheap as chips compared to that.

Is the my Micro inverter system i propose a safer System ?
My System i wish to build - 4 x 570w solar panels connected to a Micro inverter 2800w 20v - 60v DC in and the output is 230v at 8 amps 50hz single phase.
The output from the micros(230v) go to a programable current switch mode battery charger - 230v input - 48v output across 4x 12v 200amp hour Carbon lead batts (48v system)
    (fixed Controlled Current)
The Micros are programable with current sensing.
The Micros, to avoid issues would have Surge and RCBO 10 Amps Type B protection very close to inverter on the panel at the AC 230v output side.
Micro input from the 4 panels would have 4 separate inline Fuses or 4 pole DC MCB(local panel Isolation) with their own surge protection on the DC side.
Home power would come from High frequency sun ark mppt inverter units connected to the Battery 48v (non interference system as Switch Mode charger from Micros to Batts is galvanic and offers isolation as do the galvanic Micros).
    All IEC approved gear.
Its against my religion to use high voltage DC due to the risk factor (hail , water , Mechanical insulation breakdown and the Idiot factor).
Im interested in installing this at my brothers house in Queensland with a compliant installer,
    Thanks Mate from Andrew Nz

I’ve heard stories about micro converters. Are the same thing as power optimisers?

    • @jm493
      @jm493 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

No. Micro inverters take each panel's DC -> 240V AC, supervised by a central controller.
Power optimisers tweak each panel's DC -> optimised DC, and then a main inverter does string DC -> 240V AC.
Micro inverters and power optimisers both do MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) at every panel,
which is different from normal String inverters that only MPPT for the whole string.

Why would you use 250A CT for the energy meter? Surely your total household consumption will not draw more than 60-80Amp and your solar generation could further reduce it by another 10-30A from generation. So why 250Amp CT in the switchboard?

  • @noelgrant5783

Why only use a 5KW invertor with a 6.6kw solar system? Is there a loss of efficiency from the panels or ration to matching up the inverter to the panels?

@@noelgrant5783 No, it scales up - for example, a 10 kW inverter can have 13.3 kW of panels :)

Always prefer wired internet connection for long lasting systems. Cameras, inverters, security etc. Wifi disruptors are getting cheaper and can bring down 2.4 networks in seconds. There was one system that just nicely asked the WiFi to disconnect eveything from router. Cameras dropped like flies. Also everything has WiFi built in these days. But does it need to have it? My TV has two WiFi networks. But it works 100% same with a wired connection and mobiles can connect straight from router WiFi. Printers are notorious for using some old standards for backwards compatibility. Some can affect router speeds by being only legacy client. And printers work over wifi just fine using the router generated WiFi.
Even if you live in a private house, your little extra WiFi networks can severely limit the usable channel amounts. Machines that actually need it for functionality will look up the available channels and there will be some random noise on all the channels.
What will happen to a inverter that has lost internet connection? Will it limit itself or just doesn't report to cloud what it's doing. When remote shutdown is installed- I would assume it would limit itself just to be sure to stay in legal limits.

From the very first piece of equipment this fails the gold standard. Ideally it would be a curved foot that follows the shape of the colourbond. This will avoid flattening which can occur using an L foot and it's a better roof interface in terms of strength.
