I just graduated two weeks ago. I still need to go through some additional steps to obtain my license. I'm struggling, hoping I haven't made a mistake. I felt excited about the career, thought I would help students learn and feel so good about it. I went through student teaching, only five weeks of a twelve week placement. My host teacher was not having me do things in the way my University required. Every meeting was filled with negativity from all the teachers. Half the teachers were quitting or moving to another school at the end of the year. I commented on how negative of an environment it was, and how it was different than I expected. My host teacher lied to my advisor and told them I had an "outburst" in a meeting. I didn't at all. My advisors tried to find me a new placement to complete my student teaching. The principal refused to help me. This caused me to have to graduate without a license. Now, I have to go through an alternate route to licensure program through my school district. Another challenge. Another term of school.
I'm 43 years old trying to start another career. My district is desperate for teachers. There's 1200+ vacancies in the district. They just passed the decision to allow high school graduates with no college and no teaching experience to become substitutes. I don't want to throw my degree away. I think I should get licensed and do my best. I'm so discouraged, so frustrated, and now at times I'm wondering if I should continue. I need some counsel.

Love it Kyle! 28 year veteran here. Your advice about work/life balance is spot on. Work if you want to! Put in extra time if it gives you joy! If you feel the need to keep to your contract time, do it! Isn’t it wonderful that as teachers we have the freedom to do this?!! TFS ☺️

Thank you. As a teacher in my 19th year, this was so nice to hear. I’m tired, but not going anywhere! Hugs

You are spot on Kyle. I am 25 years in and I still get excited about my job. It is exhausting at the moment here in the UK too, with covid still rearing it’s head, but it’s ok to enjoy spending your own time doing school work if you want to.

There are reasons for the vacant positions and sub shortages, folks. It is bad out there. Know what you're getting into before accepting a position (ie sub in that district or at least a similar one). Don't be afraid to pass on an offer. There will be more to follow. Put yourself and your well-being first, set boundaries re: unrealistic expectations from admin/parents, don't be apologetic, and if it's not working out, leave the district and let them ponder why they couldn't retain you and very likely can't replace you.

This is so, so encouraging and helpful for me. I just changed my major to education and am in my first semester of classes towards this. It is refreshing to see a teacher who is interested in their own personal growth as well as the importance of kids and their futures. It was disheartening to see so many teachers online saying "run" "never go into teaching" etc. Thank you for this. I take notes on your methods of facilitating conversation instead of trying to force kids into one way of thinking.

I would also tell myself to calm down. I'm still telling myself to calm down. I feel like I had a picture of a classroom in my head, and I'm slowly kicking it out my head.

Hi kyle, I am in my last semester of college and I am going to start applying to teaching positions in May! Thank you so much for creating such a positive atmosphere. You are right, there is so much negativity and it's honestly made me rethink my decision. However, because of your video, I am happy to be continuing my journey in the education field!

You have a great why. I love your thoughts on every topic you mentioned. As for the things you teach, how do you do all that, teach the academics, complete the testing required Ex. 4 weeks progress tests, 6 weeks interims, spring standardized test. I feel we over test and there is no time expect to teach to the test. 🙁

Thank you for being a voice of reason during this challenging time in education. You are right that inequities can happen a ZIP code away for students. I remember when the No Child Left Behind Act appeared and you had many kids out there who were not given the chance to learn about art, music, history, and science because these subjects were not covered on the end of the year tests. That created so many educational ghettos out there. Take care.

My first year of student teaching was challenging and I seen one of my instructors that I had before and I talked to my instructor I had before about what I was experiencing.

Isn't it sad as hell that teaching civil rights is now "prohibited". This is getting ridiculous.

Hi Kyle, In the vlog you talked about staff and sub shortages. We hear a lot about that on the news on in articles. The mention low pay and no support from admin, student discipline, parental support, COVID, etc., all of which are issues. They also say the shortage is so bad because those entering the teaching profession has greatly decreased, which it has but they list the same reasons above as reasons and they are factors. I know every state and district is different, but do you think the problem is worse because Principal's don't want to hire new inexperienced teachers? It seems schools only want to hire experienced teachers which I can understand but when you have so many leaving the profession by retiring or just switching professions the only way the fix the problem is to hire new teachers. I feel the reason that we don't have as many entering the teaching profession today as we did in the past is that they know so many that are looking for a job and can't get hired so they decide not to take on all that debt to get the teaching degree and then not be able to get hired. Can you elaborate more on why you think the shortages are so bad now?
