Back in the early 60's there was a sort of a used stuff store on Germantown Ave in Philadelphia. in the store was a wooden crate full of kepis from both sides, North and South, with a price posted of $5.00 each. So if anyone knows how to go back in time could you please drop me off...OH! Wait!
back in the middle 60's a store in Glenside PA had a window full of flintlock pistols marked $35.00 and in 1951 a gun shop in Pittsburgh had a minty Sharpes carbine in a cavalry scabbard @ $35.00 also

Got one better, an army surplus in NC toward the coast I forget where had just 15 years ago 1863 Yankee canvas haversacks for 25 bucks, I bought up the rest, were 8 left apparently they had hundreds and sold them since the 1970's and then a place (another army surplus) near smokey mountain knife works in Tennessee just 7 years ago they had 15 or 16 various kepi's all the real deal for sure, they were priced from 50 to 1000 bucks, I got 5 for 2500. Guns are a easy find, some still in pawn shops believe it or not, but finding any authentic real deal clothing is a bit harder for sure.
Side note, but, The best was a tailor made artillery LT kepi red with dark blue bank and it's braid, it had VA buttons but no chin strap which I didn't mind, the other pretty one was obviously an officer that was poorer and probably voted to that rank, but it was a plain butternut bummer style with two rows braid that were sewn at separate time indicating a promotion from LT to Capt or Maj since a second row was added on all four sides with an Austrian pattern on top and a single row sewn just above the band which had a pretty cut gold strip taken from what looks like a gold officer sash, now it did have a thick painted chin strap and pre war US sheild buttons with a "C" in the middle.

@@hissyhonker220 Well no mater what you or I could recall Craig Caba beat us both. he lived in Harrisburg PA. His father had a friend who was a buyer for the Smithsonian. Sometimes if they desired a piece the seller would insist it was all or nothing, the institute would take the piece they wanted and couldn't care about the rest. The friend would ask Craigs father if he was interested. He was basically giving the stuff away. Craig amassed a huge collection in the 60's, that later in life, part of it became part of Howard Wert's Museum in Gettysburg. Craig and I were both in high school at the time, our fathers were friends. Sometimes Craig would show me stuff his Dad just bought. The one piece I remember was a Confederate Officers tunic nice double breasted, gold buttons. The Friend had sold it to his Dad for $12. They acquired a huge collection of Civil war items for peanuts.
Part of Craigs collection was stolen from the Wert's Museum in a burglary www.pennlive.com/midstate/2014/02/wert_collection_civil_war_cumb.html

......where....do...you...think...they...got...the...idea? The first "Baseball cap" dates back to the 1860
....that is the same time frame you git... even the idea of baseball cards dates to when Soldiers would send their Tin photographs home, one man takes the pics and sends it home to the troops families. That is where collector came from, when a family died of cholera and there was no one to send them to or didn't have a fixed address for them, they would have huge collections they would trade. Oh you got a Grant, Ill trade you my six different pictographs of George B McClellan...the trade was not accepted
imho you should not have stopped learning, and if you're a kid and still learning/going to school...don't stop learning, when you do, you become stupid with your self assurances of being intelligent, then you're no different from the old people with IQ less then 100

I had a McDowell that I loved that became sun faded and warped by rain. With a bit of my own greying beard it made a particularly veteran look. And I never used it for forage, but did use it to carry off supper when company first sgt issued rations off of a gum blanket (as a re-enactor).

Great subject and clip. Often too I think the original Government / Army issue "Forage Cap" is often wrongly called a 'Kepi", as they look similar; your clip shows us the difference. I believe the original US Army dress regulations stated the respective Arm of Service badges: "Hunting Horn" for Infantry, "Crossed Guns" (Cannons) for Artillery, "Crossed Sabres" for Cavalry, a "Castle" for Engineers, and ""Crossed Rifles" for Rifle Regiments (armed with rifles not muskets, and wearing dark "Rifle-Green" uniforms) were to be worn on the front of the cap, which would push the crown of the cap up / make it stand up. However a fashion developed wear the badges were attached to the top which allowed the crown to "flop" down-forward; which created a distinctive shape and look.

@@Joseywales414 officers often wore on the front face, or had a bullion badge, however most were plain as field officers often learned that pretty and distinct hats make for nice targets, alot of early war Confederate headwear was colorful and decorative but after 1862 much less and less so as they too learned strutting turkeys make nice targets too.

Kepi’s were a privately purchased item. They wouldn’t be common in the ranks of enlisted men. Forage caps were the issues headgear, the federal government never issued kepis as part of the 1858 uniform, and not until 1872 you’ll the new forage cap resemble a kepi in terms of issued gear to an enlisted man. Reenactors have a bad habit of watching movies and wanting to mimic what they see on screen.

No documentation exists to support the use of the cap for gathering forage or anything else. Soldiers didn't purposely bend the visors back up again the cap. That happened after the visor got wet and dried. It happened naturally. I give him credit for not calling the forage cap a "bummer" which term was never used for this

I use my Carhartt hat in the summer to gather blueberries from my blueberry bushes so I don't see why it's not possible for them to have done the same thing. Soldiers during Vietnam used the outer shell of their helmets as a wash/shave basin also. Just because there's no written record of it doesn't necessarily mean they didn't do it.

Actually, funny enough-you look long and hard enough, there are actual accounts such as this poem:
“O, say have you seen the unique Forage Cap
That good Uncle Sam on his Army doth clap?
Some turn up it’s visor, and some turn it down,
Still it gives each poor wearer the air of a clown.
It looks like a scarecrow-good reason why
The enemy saw it, took fright and did fly.
But the flag of our union in triumph shall wave,
When each cap and each contractor shall lie in one grave”
      -Army & Navy Journal, March 2nd 1872

@@BackAtTheBricks You tell me where I can read about a cap being used carry berries in, or apples, or anything else. I've been searching for a period first person reference for 40 years. It doesn't exist.

“Forage” had the same meaning then as “Utility” or “Fatigues “ do to day. It had nothing to do with filling the cap with anything.

I make kepi's, museum quality for reenactors but I only do private orders and mostly only to go with a frock and trousers, the only other person that's still alive and kicking that is very good ( hehe both me and him has fooled museums with ours) is a fella called dirty Billy in GA, look up dirty billy in GA on Google, he's even got a shit ton of real ones and a few officer ones at that he may part with. He's pricey but it's damn good work. I make them cause I wanted too many as a kid and they cost a lot so I started making them on grannies old sewing machine and, well, 20 years later I like to think I got pretty good, but I do it for education and a passion and I don't like charging enough to live on. A quality officers frock, cap and trousers can go for an easy 800-1000 and fine kepi's especially with real gold braid for 150-350 bucks for a museum quality. Which is why I only do private and personal orders. It takes time and slot of patience, everything is hand sewn for quality as is everything with dirty Billy, like I said his stuff has fooled museums too.

Those are the wrong color, and would have probably gotten you shot at the time south of the Mason Dixon line. A grey kepi, now we're talking. That's a great hat. Let's out a rebel yell for the Confederate state of Georgia. "YaHoooo!
