  • In this video I will give you a systematic method of sifting through stamps to assess which are likely to have value. Once you've identified those you can further study only the important ones and build a picture of the value.
In the second half we will look at where you can go to find out the value of a stamp and where is the best place to sell the collection.

For anyone out there with stamp albums collection, be very careful when taking them to a dealer for avaluation. I did not make inventory or took photos of the albums. My albums come back almost empty and the person insist that I lost them on my way home.

Very interesting video about stamps. Actually, the Penny Red stamp displayed does not appear to be that bad. Penny Reds were issued by Great Britain 1854-1864. The U.S. stamp it was compared to was issued in 1968. Penny Red stamps were some of the earliest perforated stamps in the world. Centering was much more imprecise, and to find one with good margins is very difficult. Also, stamp collectors at that time were considered eccentric, so early stamps were not printed to collector’s specifications. Not so with the 1968 U.S. stamp. By then, printing methods were greatly improved and stamp collecting was considered the world’s most popular hobby. You can expect to find much better margins on more recent stamps, than on older issues. Early stamps with great margins often sell at great prices. Also, early British stamps are typically heavily canceled, and that example seemed to have a better than usual cancellation.

Nice simple and sound explanation of how stamps are valued. Only suggestion, a summary powerpoint would help putting in heirarchical order the main factors that determine stamp value and two or three examples.
I would add that for those stamps that are unused but common -- for commemorative 3 cent US stamps from the late 1930's through early 1960's. Except for a stamp that really appears in perfect shape (and this requires developing an eye) sell them as a grab bag averaging the cost of every stamp if the grab extends to stamps with different face values. For this case, say the majority are 3 - 8 cent stamps with less 10 - 22 cent ones, you could charge for 100 stamps about $8 - $12 with shipping costs included and if you have several you can offload quite a few over a month. These grab bags (philatelists call these kiloware) are quite popular for stamp collectors and even those simply looking for old stamps to enliven their postage for personal letters and cards. I bought one of these grab bags and it was quite fun - majority were very fine grade with two or three higher grade and one or two poorer. These grab bags could also make a great addition to gifts to kids for the upcoming Christmas season.

Hello 👋 I’m starting to get interest in stamps and stamp collection. I have a question when stamps are made, is a certain stamp style, (image) on the stamps are they made for a certain time or only a certain amount are made? Thus after that with the stamps not being made anymore for those who have them it would make them one of a kind right? As in rare because the stamps are no longer made? Any info is appreciated thank you! Good day blessings

The "borders" on a perf 1d Red are not relevant to the value, because all the stamps were the same size. The centring of the stamp does influence the value a little.
The margins on imperf 1d Reds (which were cut out of the sheet) DO affect the value.
What affects the value of perf 1d Reds is the plate number. The ones with the letters in all 4 corners have plate numbers in the side ornaments: plate 77 is extremely rare and 225 is scarce.
The ones with stars in the top corners have no plate numbers in the design, but can be plated by experts from the position of the corner letters.

Your erudite comment shows the need to educate oneself thoroughly when acquiring such classic stamps as the Red penny stamps. Personally I avoid them just because they aren't a main interest in my stamp[ collecting and I do not have time. I collect coins and probably would prefer spending more time on older coinage than colder stamps. For this reason I tend to stick with mainly 20th century and ultra modern stamps. Yet, I find one needs to do some research -- but in many ways it is easier to research ultra-moderns (with the exceptions of errors) as the technology allows for a higher level of production quality (as for artistic merit, I think it is about the same as in the past or a little less) so some factors that profoundly influence the value of 19th century stamps is moot. However, I do find it interesting as a novice to stmp colelcting is even for ultra-moderns, platenumber can be a factor in a stamp's value.
Anyway great comment. Will see if you put up videos yourself.

@@chrissahar2014 I'd like to put up some videos, but lack the tech skills to do so.
There is an old saying: knowledge is power, and this is very true when collecting Victorian GB.
A few months ago, there was a nice cover on ebay, bearing a 1d Red, which I saw about 45mins before it ended. I was going to an important meeting, so I didn't check it too carefully.
      It sold for £45.
I later found out it was a small crown Die 1perf 14 plate 195. There are less than 20 and very few on cover - worth about £8000. I wish I'd missed that bloody meeting, as it's one of the few stamps I don't have.

@@kingcurry6594 Wow what a sharp eye. But then on ebay you have to watch out for counterfeits. I find buying modern stamps reduces the risks although doesn't eliminate it.
Ebay is also notorious - unlike your case - for overcharging on what are easily acquired new issues from the United States Postal Service. It drives me nuts to see sellers charging $18 for a pane of 20 for a commemorative which is STILL available both on ebay and the USPS site for face value 11.60 or 13.60 ($2 for fast and secure delivery for latter, for the former at any post office).
The only time I pay over face value for an available modern US stamp are coil formats. often the US Postal Services requires buying them in large quantities so that you spend $30 for 1,000 3 cent stamps which are hard to find at local post offices. Why? These coil rolls are often meant for businesses which large mail volume. And yes collectors will spend even more than that --- the US Postal Service offers its First Class rate stamps (Forever stamps) which are now at 58 cents. A coil of 3,000 just under $1,800! In particular the Wild Orchid stamp series is one example which is available only in coil rolls of such amounts on the USPS site. So, buyers as myself will pay a small premium for them if I desire them. it beats having 3,000 stamps and using some and hoping you sell the rest --- of course if you are a part-time online stamp dealer that is a different story.
The point of my long paragraph is to show that even ultra-modern stamps one should do SOME research to determine the best alternatives for one's budget and to know when a deal is too good (US Flag forever coil stamps have been known to be counterfeited and successfully used for postage!).
Well I hope you consider a blog on stamps. It requires little technical knowledge as there are sites that lead you through the creation of a blog or website.

Thanks for uploading this video, i have some comments :
The 1 million Mark, stamps are more expensive used as unused, the stamp should have a date in the postmark. The date should be of the date the stamps were sold in the postoffice.
The Stanley gibbons site shows prices, dont forget these are the prices they want for it, but the value is less, they are unsold.
If the prices were right they were sold.
Nowadays people can find collectors on the internet, a dealer pays less. Loose stamps have more value if you want to sell.
The value is made by collectors not by dealers. Question and demand, the demand side makes the value.
If you want to sell stampcollections and you know not what it is , it has no value, the profit is for the buyer he has to search through the collections to find the better ones, that takes time and time is money.
If you look through an old collection, the color of the stamps tell something, red is cheap, green is a little better and blue is better than green. (international used colors, blue is international rat, green is local rate).
After all a dealer doesnt make the price but the buyer.

Stanley Gibbons inflates the value of stamps because they take advantage of being trusted and regarded as THE authority on stamps and they have a vested interest in doing so. Catelogue prices for British pre decimal stamps are terribly over-valued and for the older ones you can usually move the decimal point one number to the left to get a better idea of the real value. That is why eBay auctions usually only realise 5-10% of catelogue value for cancelled stamps. Mint stamps generally speaking do better in that regard.

In the video, if one inherited a few stamps like the quantity in the video, then one would need to do "research" to find the potential value of each stamp with the pointers in the video. However, should one inherited a sizable collection of hundred or even thousands of stamps and have no knowledge, then take it to several dealers and look for offers. If the consensus that they have no interest of buying, then the collection would have very little market value....in another words the dealers would not want to buy it off your hands to even try to make a profit. Word of caution, should they make an offer, there is something in the collection that they would be interested in buying just to turn it around to make a profit, and they would give you pennies on the dollar. Take the collection and start walking out the door, and if the dealer stops you at the door to negotiate further, then you really know that there is something really good in your collection. And if you walk out, without the dealer calling for you to stop, then you know that you have something of some value, but enough that the dealer would let an opportunity to make a profit slip away.

    • @willardtaylor6249
      @willardtaylor6249 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

So many of them were printed by Germany during the inflation of 1923 that they are still quite common. More copies exist that were never used, than those that actually were used, so they are worth a little more used, than unused. However, so many of these had postmarks applied, without passing through the mails that it would have to be proven that the stamp actually did postal duty before it could be considered to have more value than an unused example. Unless such a stamp is left on an envelope, an expert would have to make that determination.

Its easy, look at your internet catalog. You see the value. Then make it 10% and thats the real buy/sell price, thats the basic rule for average stamps (in OK condition, value 1-1 000 $). But of course, you gonna miss some variants, types, reprints, etc, its actually very difficult to identify some stamps, you need to examine them wall and using a special catalogue.

Perhaps you can help me to
To tell the difference between all the red $0.02 American Lincoln stamps I go on the internet and one stamp is worth $0.05 and then the other identical which appears to be identical is worth $500 the same stamp same colour?? And then they have numbers for the staff 489-494-496. Etc.
So what's the easiest way to find out if one of my stamps which appears to almost be the same as another stem of the same year same colour same denomination but yet it's so different in price that's crazy?

My friend has recently come across a bundle of stamps from around 1970’s Istanbul scene?
Could you do a valuation of them via email or is there somewhere I can get one done?
He’s constantly sending me there pictures and asking for help 🤔

I think this is how a stamp dealer would do it, say you inherited a stamp collection, you take it to a dealer,
forget catalog value, what he's going to do is add up the face value, say it adds up to $10,000, if he wants
it he'll make you an offer of around 40-50% of face value. He will then cherry pick the best material then
list the collection saying it is $10k face value and will probably realize something around 60% of face,
a very nice, clean, well organized collection might realize maybe 70% on a good day, but not more than that.Personally, my US collection is roughly 90% complete and everything 1920 to present mint never hinged (MNH),
I believe it's worth much more than a percentage of face value, I hope my heir will try and sell the
collection by piecing it out, this is how you get top dollar but it takes much work and time, I would
suggest to my heir that before he lists a stamp to check Scott value, then see what the stamp is listed
at on sites like Stamps2Go and eBay then list it at the going market rate. To make a wild guess, my collection could be worth $70k catalog price, but face value only 17K, a dealer
would give you maybe 5K, he would cherry pick it and make a couple of thousand from the choice material,
then list it at face value starting bid at least what he paid for it, but probably (in my example) 6K,
all profit and he'll probably not even break it down. If my collection was pieced out, everything sold
it could realize $30-40k but it's going to take years and a lot of work.

You will be lucky to get 5 cents for each stamp. The penny reds are also collected by plate number. There are a few plate numbers that are rare and command a premium over a common penny red. The Wiemar 1 million denom stamp was issued in the millions and is common. The GB stamps are low denom and as such are common. Hitler heads are common. As well as the US stamps they are also common. The 2 postage due stamps are the best of the common stamps. There are no stamps in this grouping that catalog over 1 dollar. The denomination of the stamp is important. High values like 1 gb pound or more would sell for a premium

The biggest mistake is to believe the catalog values for most stamps. I have 100-year-old US stamps that I just stick on letters. Even if they are in mint condition they are hard to sell for a profit. There is just so much competition on EBay. One time I bought $100 face value in stamps on EBay, none of them printed after 1940, and I paid under face value ($80). They're all mint and undamaged.

    • @karnubawax
      @karnubawax 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yup. Lots of times most value from an old collection, particularly from someone who has been collecting up until recent times, comes from the fact that all those old stamps they bought for 20c are still valid for postage! I'm looking through a collection right now that has about $500 in face value USA stamps. Definitely not a good investment, but they are still worth something.

USA did not have postage stamps in the 18th Century. Even the fist postage stamp was 1840, placing it in the mid 19th Century. My advice - get a stamp catalogue from the library and see if anything has any value (assume nothing does) - then try to sell them on eBay either individually if any are worth anything or as one big lot if not.
