@@Celestia282 I think what I like about her is how real she seems. Also, she's constantly suffering unfair situations and that makes her sympathetic. "Hot anime waifus" never did it for me. There's something that viscerally turns me off about that entire subculture.
This is probably my favorite episode so far solely for Great Ape Goku going on a rampage! Glad you enjoyed the first arc of Dragon Ball. It only gets better from here!
Everyone got their wish afterall. Oolong got his panties, Bulma got her boyfriend, Yamcha lost his fear for girls, and Goku gets to be Roshi's pupil. Puar, he's just happy to see Yamcha happy. Amazing intro to Dragon Ball. Really wholesome
Realized this actually fits a good season structure, as many anime nowadays do a 11-13 episodes for a season. Usually older anime tend to follow minimal structure to their pacing, and end up feeling wildly different.
The shorter arcs isn't actually that new. Anime has kinda always been split into two categories: the battle shounens that drag on for a 100+ episodes and everything else that caps out at around 26 episodes. There are some exceptions with shows that run for longer than the standard but fail to reach the excessiveness of a battle shounen, such as Code Geass that had a double run ending at 52 episodes. However, that division still works quite well.
The next story arc is one of my favorite. Like most people I saw dbz first so when I finally went through db it was amazing to see the origins of all these characters but my favourite was watching goku train with roshi and seeing just how important roshi was to the series
I like the reaction of Goku realizing he lost his tail in the original Japanese more... first he freaks out "where's my tail? what happened?" and then he simply says "maa ikka" which roughly translates to just a nonchalant "oh well" or "okay". that fits him better imho
I like this more, actually. It's a much more layered joke. Goku not caring that he had a limb amputated is funny, but there's only one level to it: he's blase about life. However, him confidently proclaiming that he'll wait until his tail comes back has that same joke along with two more. It also shows that his innocence/ignorance as he clearly doesn't realize that limbs don't normally grow back. It also has an ironic twist to it in that his tail eventually *does* come back, which flips the entire joke on its head. On the surface, it's a joke about how Goku is a fool, but when his tail grows back, it turns out that everyone else (including the audience) are actually the fools. It's a significantly deeper and more intelligent joke.
@@Celestia282 yeah, but it's not supposed to be. Goku is supposed to be exactly who we expect him to be - innocent and ignorant of how the world works, and this scene is supposed to highlight his care-free attitude towards something as important and significant (or so we the audience and characters that interacted with him so far are led to believe) as a potentially permanent loss of part of his body. This is the first instance we see it so clearly, but he continues to have the same attitude throughout his entire life (first and third life at least, he got kind of serious with the second life, lots of anger management issues off-planet...). Lose a limb? Oh well. Wreck havoc on the planet? Oh well. Get entire universes and timelines destroyed? Guess what - oh well. A change never bothered him anyway, because while the world around him may change, people around him may change, he won't. He is simply too simple-minded. Get strong, find stronger guys, fight stronger guys, win or lose get better, maybe try not to die and don't lose people along the way... but with time death started carrying less and less weight in Goku's eyes so in his most recent years after Cell he is increasingly even more carefree...
@@Celestia282 well to each their own, I didn't say I don't like this one, just that I like the original more. the more versions there are the higher likelihood that different people can like and enjoy the same thing, so I'm not even upset - quite the contrary, I'm glad you find this joke better from your pov.
Man, i really didnt remember that they foreshadowed Goku being an alien this early. Could also be a translation thing since i think the dub of the OG dragon ball came out after DBZ got so popular
You're gonna love the next section, I think this is where dragonball really picks up, this coming arc and the one after is phenomenal. You'll really like it.
Man they draw out this part soooooo much in the anime 🤔 In the manga there's no part where Bulma twists her ankle, Pilaf doesn't try to shoot down Goku, no Ozaru-Goku weirdly picking up and licking Bulma, Yamcha doesn't try to use the Wolf fang fist and a reminder that Roshi Motorboats Oonlong-Bulma
That's the nature of anime. If you only do what's in the manga, you'd have like 3-4 chapters per episode and then run out of material and have to do filler or go on a hiatus.
I watched Dragon Ball Z before Dragon Ball, so the first time I saw this episode, I finally understood why Yamcha looks so sad when they introduced baby Trunks.
I like that the reaminings of the great writing of DB use to appear in the mordern oart of the franchise once in a while in the form of characters interaction and the toriyama humor.
After the loss of his tail. Goku can't even stand up straight. Master Rossi ends up doing a lot physical therapy on Goku. Even teaching him how to walk while balancing. Skipping.
You forgot that bulma’s dad is a filthy rich millionaire genius scientist she could have whatever she wanted so yamcha doesn’t have to be a Thief now that his girlfriend is rich.
"We have to see how Yamcha gets his scar." Yeah, about that... Unless there's some filler I've never heard of, we never learn how he got that scar on his face.
The Pilaf ark has ended let the Training ark begin. This ark will mainly follow Goku Roshie and two others who appear in the next episode. Bulma, Yamacha, Oolong, and Puar will make a last appearance in the next episode and then we won't see them again till the beginning of the First Tournament ark.
And you've reached the end of the first arc! By this point in the manga, they realized that it hadn't really taken off, so they began to add more martial arts elements into the story to make it stand out.
The power scaling here is pretty insane. There is no way any one on earth could defeat a transformed Saiyan. Fortunatly he does have a weakness, his tail.
I never noticed until now, but Bulma's current appearance looks a lot like Marle from Chrono Trigger. Not too surprising, considering Toriyama did the character designs for the game; heck, Lucca looks like Bulma during the Namek arc. I just found the connection interesting; since Chrono Trigger and Dragon Ball were both a part of my teen years.
End of one amazing arc going in to another amazing arc. I don't think there is even a bad arc in this series. It was funny that Goku licked Bulma considering she ends up with Vegeta who considers Goku his biggest rival.
If I remember correctly, I think the Red Ribbon Army arc drags a bit long, but I do agree that none of the arcs are bad. In fact, I unironically believe that Dragonball is way better than Z.
@@Celestia282I sort of disagree. I think RR arc drags in specific places (General Blue), but beyond that it's actually paced pretty well in my opinion.
You have to know this dub was done years after the release of DBZ in America. So Goku being an alien was never foreshadowing or anything that was all done in hindsight.
Thinking about it, its not surprising Yamcha turns into a womanizer. Up until this point, he's been afraid of girs and now that he can talk to girla he doesn't miss any opportunities.
Fun fact: Great Ape Goku power level was maybe 100 at the time cuz they get stronger 10 times. Goku pl was like 10 or 12 considering he train with his grandpa. Even a heat seeking missile just flinch on him but that's it lol
I had forgotten how much of a reaction Mai in her nightgown got out of me when I first saw this at 15 or 16 years old.
