Thanks for going thru the process of creating windows and doors. It really helps speed the creation of my floor plans. There are many ways to solve a problem with sketch, the key is being efficient and consistent.
Thanks Justin. This video (I think I have seen it ten times by now and maybe it will stick this time) answers my previous question about how to group entities and add them to layers without inadvertently gluing them together. I'm still unsure about the working difference between exploding, unlocking and opening a group. When do you use explode, when do you open, when do you unlock. Eventually, it will all make sense.
just a tip, when you were doing the windows, the offset tool remembers the previous measurement you did when you double click it, just like the double click in the push pull tool pulls the previous measurement.
Good logical method here ,for the windows. I was modeling apartments recently and definitely spent long time on it. I over complicated things by modeling 3 layers of wall (outer brick, cavity, inner block work, and even a fourth layer for plasterboard!) -so, when it came to adding windows, I hadn't thought about how I would do that. With the walls at least three layers thick, I had to push pull each layer in turn for around 18 window openings round my flat block. Someone on SketchUps forum told me about a neat 'punch hole' extension where you can create an object and make it a punch shape to bust through multiple layers. The UI for,the extension was failing on my particular sketchup installation so I abandoned but it might have been good. I quite liked your technique of using guides to set up the bottom and top heights. And also your approach to modeling the doors by just extending (create new face) from the wall leading up to it. In my instance, I modeler simple rectangular doors, but I did them already on either a 45 or 90* angle to the wall. But I like your method, especially the way you created the frames all in one. Edit: this comment was meant for your video preceding this one! But my TH-cam app added the comment to the following video, instead, hope that makes sense!
Totally made sense - Planning for your partitions can get pretty important. I think maybe Double-Cut (thesketchupessentials.com/doublecut , affiliate link) might be able to do this?
When you mention the Tape measure in layout mode, reversing the face, and copy the line.... It might be nice for the new guys like me to stop or slow that step so we can see how you are dong that. Yes. I do realize do not have the basics...... GREAT video!!!
Thanks for the video Justin. Don't want to be too picky but the window that leads to the balcony should have been either a double door or a slider. Just and observations.
Heey Justin, you're videos are very helpfull, i think sketchup should hire you because on the online campus they explain the basics but a beginner really needs your tutorials to have a good start
Hi Justin, I have needed help with modeling. This video and the one that showed modeling walls in 3d using the "create new face" mode have given me a huge boost. Your Twilight Render info was also extremely helpful in helping me get my foot in the rendering door. I need to model and create construction documents in Sketchup. You have been more help than any other resource. Thank you, I am now a Patreon supporter.
i am impressed.. Looks good.. only too bad there is no access to the balcony :-) Used Sketchup long time ago for creating my - rather complex house -.. Forgot all about it and have to start from scratch again.
Hi, great video. Just one thought about the floorplan itself. I am pretty sure that the "window" to the balcony should actually be a sliding door. Otherwise it doesn't make sense to have a balcony. Of course this is not the idea of the video which is really awesome and easy to follow. Thank you. P.S. Ignore that... I could see you fixed it on your next video. :D
thank you, i haven't watched the next video yet, but i'm glad to know this was caught, it's been stressing me out while i watch now, I had to pause and see if anybody pointed this out. (such a shame that I fixated on this as this is a really informative and useful series).
Hi, I am new to sketchuplayout. How do you put stairs on Layout with proper symbols (cutting lines). When i use the section tool, it cuts the whole tread and shows on plan view. Thank you!
Thanks for your efforts to make this tutorial project but i am looking for a youtube tutorial which is similar to this one but starts from 2d autocad scratch till the completion of 3d building using sketchup and rendering. Do you have it please?
Hi Justin, amazing content, very crisp and clear. Although, I do have a problem, when I'm using my push pull tool to cut through the exterior wall for making windows then my window seems to disappear from the front end but does appear on the other side. Not sure why that is happening. It worked fine for the doors. :( Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Exelents video I do framing custom homes and some time turns so hard to figure roof in different elevations and I am interesting to buy this software Which one the more convenient to me ..? Recommendations
Hi Justin - such an informative video, Thank You! Question (from a newbie) is there a reason you do not import doors and windows from the 3D Warehouse in lieu of creating them yourself? Also curious why you would not leave your doors in the open position, then it would work well in 3D and plan, would it not? Maybe there is a reason further down the road that I've not experienced yet ;) Thanks!
The only real reason is that when I model them myself, I know that they're set up properly with the different groups and visibilities. You could definitely use doors and windows from the 3D Warehouse, just make sure you're placing them in the right groups and with the right layers when you bring them in. You could definitely leave the doors in the open position as well - probably more of a perference thing than anything else - it shouldn't really affect your workflow. Thanks!
Really great video! Just one suggestion when modelling windows i generally use the x-ray mode so that i can see the windows in plan and then use the tape measure tool to create guides
Hi just curios do your extensions affect things differently? because i do things to the point exactly the same as you yet my outcomes are different Regards
when making windows, Im trying to get the outline on the inside of the exterior walls, but my push pull tools is cutting a whole on the wall leaving me with no outline.
@@Thesketchupessentials I believe so. What was weird was that I had to shut off the program and relaunch it. Delete my previous window outline and draw a new one in. It seems like when I make new shapes, it becomes a new one and it won't let me edit the exterior wall itself.
Hey there, When I try and make the door like at around 4mins I try and make it a group it automatically selects all internal walls and also joins this to said group, any help appreciated
Sounds like you're selecting your door geometry and the group containing the walls. Try deselecting the interior walls by holding "shift" and clicking on them
Hi!! I want to thank you for all your videos. We share your tuto on facebook on our page "Toumi Brothers" it's a association of Marketing and Pub and architecture facebook.com/TBannaba/ Thank's Justin Keep Working!!!
So brilliant! No one else is teaching this way, so important to consider LayOut while drawing ✍️ in SketchUp.
Glad you found it helpful - If you're modeling for Layout, the setup process is VERY important! Thanks!
OMG you make my life so much easier, as a beginner, I do understand more, thanks for sharing your knowledge, God bless you!
Happy to help!

Right...great point! I'd forgotten that the tool memory is specific to the tool itself - thanks a lot!

Hmm - I can't remember - maybe I covered some of that in the first video of the series? Either way, glad you found it helpful :)!
really i like what you do , you simplize everything to take advantage of your tutorials , thanks
You are welcome!
Thanks for the video Justin.

Great. Many thanks to sharing your skills.

is this the only way to put doors, it's really stressful and i couldnt remodel my doors to fit the new space or to reduce it
really love your voice, so enjoy this lesson...
Glad you liked it!
Hi, your tutorial is very very helpful, people like me just beginning level also can understand. Thank you very much, Justin.

why does my push pull tool extrudes only the edges of a polygon? its a hollow extrusion

When I do the section cut my walls are black and cannot see the window in top view, what am I doing wrong?
Try going up to "View" and unchecking the box for "Section Fill"

This is a good one - I really like this tip :)
Can Sketchup be uploaded to MacOS 10.15.7?
bedankt had geen idee waarom het lukte om ramen te maken maar nu weet ik het
amazing.

I'm going to need more information, especially since I don't believe I used any extensions in this tutorial. Which ones are you talking about?
when making windows, Im trying to get the outline on the inside of the exterior walls, but my push pull tools is cutting a whole on the wall leaving me with no outline.
I don't quite understand what's happening - are you sure you drew your window outline inside your wall group?

Why my sketchup have no ‘outlines’ Pannel on the right side? It’s a third plusin of sketchup?
What version?

Feel like your balcony "window" should be a sliding glass door...

When I do a section cut, my walls are white and I just see nothing. What do I do wrong?
Are section fills turned on? Also...I don't understand - your walls are white, but also there's nothing on your screen?
