@Divalvaro I feel shame for my russian comrade here. But nevertheless, Russia didnt want to participate in war before Napoleon invaded Russian Territory, so russian forces didn't really fight Napoleon, they just tried to push him back and not to loose too much forces themselves. But when Napoleon invaded Russia, he didn't need ANY ally cause he had whole Europe as part of his Empire. More than that, Russia had significantly less army than Napoleon's Great Army. And, more than that, Russia destroyed Napoleon's Great Army almost without any help from Britain. Prussia, Austria and so on already, as I said, were the part of french Empire and provided Great Army with supplies and soldiers. The same was with Hitler in WW2 -- he followed the same plan. And it is, again, was left to Russia to deal with European conqueror. Check for number of soldiers participating in Normandy landings (D-Day) and in a single Battle of Kursk. You see, Russia is located in a territory which is constantly under pressure from Asia (which had very aggressive conquerors, like mongols and turks, and nomad raiders) and at the same time Russia is a great threat to Europe. At the same time Russia never has time to conquer Europe because of economical problems (very problematic region with cold weather is a cause for it) and invasions from Asia. So, it is a destiny at the end of any european conqueror to try to defeat Russia as a threat to Europe. But they never succeeded, nethertheless weakening Russia by war and sending it back into economical crysis and defensive position. This is a cycle which repeated many times.
@Divalvaro First, I did not mock France. I agree: the ideas of French Revolution were far better than feudal Monarchies. Second, Napoleon and Hitler (not Hitler exactly but people behind his military plans) conquered whole Europe. Nevertheless you mock them as total idiots which they were not. You assume they could handle whole Europe but could not comprehend weather forecasts? They did not know it's cold in winter in Russia? Stop being an idiot and believing propaganda: Hitler with machines and tanks took more time to get to Moscow than Napoleon on horses and still both of them lost not to winter but to Russian tactics of staggering enemy army and cutting supply lines. That's how they were bitten, not by winter but by strategy and logistics. Third, by the time Napoleon invaded Russia he already betrayed The Revolution and became emperor himself. As a consequence he didn't free Russian people. Instead mass war crimes with robbery and violence emerged on Russian territory by French army -- that was the reason for partisan movement.

+Judge731 right. When Napoleon and his troops entered Moscow, winter hadn't come yet. They occupied the city for a month from mid september to late october 1812 until Napoleon ordered a way back to France. Harsh winter came to them in early november when they were on their way back.
They never won a war. They won battles though. Napoléon's campaign in Russia was quite successful until lack of supplies had him start his disastrous retreat. And that was my point : historically, the french, in their only direct war against Russia, were winning decisively, or so they thought, even taking Russia's capital. Napoléon thought the russians would surrender then. But the russians didn't fight on France's terms, turning the war into an attrition war. The french eventually ran out of supplies, retreated and died by the thousand to the harsh russian winter, exhaustion and famine.
smolensk valutino borodino, all french victories. Whatever you want to imagine about russia, their army was inferior to france or they would have never done things the way they did, and about the number of men engaged, russia actually ended up using more men than France. As for the winter, why do you think napoleon retreated when he could have set up a camp in moscow ? No food left and winter not really the season to harvest. It s actually Russia who won without winning an engagment against the big army using a strategy that you can't apply in western europe.
Dwarov 1 you are just denying at this point the 3 battles I quoted are french victories, if you engage an army on its way to moscow and dont manage to stop it and losing more men in the engagement that s a lose... la grande armée lost more men to illness, storms, desertion and harassment than in direct engagment. It wasn’t well prepared for the russian tactic to burn their own lands, but it was a juggernaut in frontal battle. There are no army in history of europe that won as many battles in 10 years as la grande armee. If russia was winning engagments like you claimed, why did they not push back on their own and waited for another coalition?
