First, it was Germans and Irish, then Italians and Jewish. The final waves of cultural immigrants in the Lower East Side are Chinese and Latinos. With this gentrification going, very soon it will be mainly residents with higher income coming from suburban areas of USA and some upper class immigrants.
It will be upper class Latinos and Chinese who will run the entire country as well as from India .Rice will be the new bread and Tea will be the new brew .White America is no longer (thankfully) but exists in small pockets that will eventually fade away like the romans slowly disappeared .Power to my peeps yo !!
Damn this sucks man. I was born in Brooklyn and lived in bushwick all my life until I was 17. I had a great childhood man, I would always be outside playing w friends on the block but as I got older this definitely changed. it makes me sad bc I know that I was probably part of the last generation. Of kids in NYC to experience the feeling of community and belonging to a neighborhood. Nowadays you dont see kids outside on their blocks or stoops hanging out. These gentrifiers really broke up the neighborhoods and make us feel weak and worthless. The sight of your neighborhood being torn down to develop these fancy new buildings that you know you'll never be able to live in has to be some form of structural violence, I know it made me feel bad about myself and my family's poor status. It's funny how a lot of these gentrifiers are college educated and mostly liberal leaning but fail to realize how their actions really impact the community, human greed amd selfishness never fails.
The white supremists , gentrifiers as you call them, know exactly what they're doing. It's psychological warfare. Structural racism. By design to destroy the fabric of family and community. They know exactly what they're doing.
A lot of people blame the rich, but as a resident, a lot of us from here didn't contribute as much I think, and thus led to how it is now. Maybe if some of us had invested or bought the buildings here when they were cracked out and shit, we would fully own it, but it seems a lot of neglected what was really around us, and I can't blame these new cats... But I hate them, too.
How can I contact you to request the rights to use a short clip from this piece in a film I am putting together for display in the museum of reclaimed urban space (LES 9th and C). Great work, thanks!
I lived on the Lower East Side of Manhattan all of my life, since the early 1960,s, Before there was GULIANI, I lived there as best as can be, After Guliani /Bloomberg, I couldn't afford to pay the Ridiculously Expensive rents. As far as I,m Concerned, the Hell with both of those 2 Mayor's.
Don't let the original lower east people who r living here for generations lose there homes, apts, life, yes the apts cost way 2 much,we can't afford to pay,we were here first & should be able to stay this isn't progress if it hurts us,help us stay, cut the crap live &v let live,I've seen the changes of new people moving to the l e s, let us be where we r at A T
My family is from the LES stretching back to the time they arrived in NYC around 1890. I grew up on Grand st by the FDR drive starting in 1956. All of lower Manhattan has been undergoing change since it was founded by the Dutch. Today the LES retains an ethnic mix for two reasons. First, the neighborhood still has many section 8 public housing projects including the old Vladek Houses on Jackson st built around 1940. Those projects aren't going anywhere and will continue to house black, hispanic and chinese residents. And secondly, the Chinese have somehow retained a strong grip on Chinatown. It's still virtually impossible for a non Chinese to rent an apt in Chinatown. While most new Asian immigrants to NYC settle in Flushing and Sunset Park,Bklyn a few still settle in Chinatown's old tenement buildings. I certainly lament many of the changes brought about by gentrification. Unfortunately the digital age is gentrifying cultures all around the world. Nonetheless, even with gentrification the LES will continue to be ethnically diverse for a long time to come. The yuppified hipsters will still be rubbing shoulders with low income minorities.
I visited here and Chinatown (just around) for one month in 2013 and I really fell in love with this area. But in 2017 I came back and the Chinatown seemed gone out its past. I am still living in Chinatown since then (2 more years now) and have seen businesses open and close in same year by each year. Old people and homeless more, Still pray the Chinese in here doesn’t gone. It showed how bright it was but now trYing to keep up its life. Houston is an immigrant city too (I knew it for two years) but somehow the changes in New York happen extremely fast compared to other states and cities. Cities around the world rapidly develop too but they go for growing up and up but New York is delayed and lost. So sad. Anyway, can I have the name of the Chinese song in the end of video?
This is an Insult, I was born and raised in the Smith projects I lefted in 97 I only visited 1x, but LES was good like it was it had and distinct character. I made NYC special. U had soho, little Italy, Chinatown, harlem know it all looks the same and Real injustices many parts all the way into central park was black ownes land
There is nothing wrong with gentrification. I can't afford to live anywhere in NYC (I'm from Africa) - this isn't some form of racism or discrimination, it's market forces. It sucks for you if you get pressed out, but there are many unintended negative externalities in this world. Suck it up and get used to it.
As a native New Yorker the gentrification of the city breaks my heart. Thank you for documenting what has happened to the Lower East Side.
imagine how the Indians felt

Genterfication sucks
After the rich sucked up the soul of the neighborhood, they up and left when "shit hit the fan."
white yuppies, arabs, bangladesh & hindus from india have replaced some of these people (Sept 11, 2020)

Noooo It’s only a matter of time b4 we have the same story in East Harlem today, saw one neighborhood go it’s gonna hurt to see another

Examples of his last statement have already begun in The Castro of San Fransisco CA.
I miss the real LES. It was a lot more better before Hipsters and Yuppies colonizing it.

So I guess you enjoy being dominated by Hipsters and Yuppies getting drunk and acting stupid late at night
Go back to Africa.
Or stay there with that bs you talking.
You oughta be ashamed of yourself. Not knowing systemic racism when you see it.
Biodiversity heart beat.
