      A drum midi grooves pack for EZ drummer.
      And a service where you can hire my session drummer for $100 per track / 1hr session.
      So you can either build from a library of grooves or get the tailored touch, and be on the session with him and get exact kind of grooves and feel that you’d want.

    Very interesting moment of the virtual tracks using, didnt know about that. However, I personally freezed the audio tracks only to free some dsp capacity, but buses and effects can be modified at any time leaving them enabled. Another disadvantage is that many times mixing a live recorded session 45-60 minutes or more - printing anything in session realtime is a pain...

    Thanks again for the great info! I was shocked though, at how you must manage outboard gear inserts. Since Luna is so tied to Apollo H/W it would seem logical to be able to insert, just like a plugin, in any track a Send/Return to Apollo channels! I think Logic allows for it (the I/O utility plugin). Luna definitely should!

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Prince!
      Just seeing your comment, I do not, BUT.. it can be relatively straight forward.. if your in the "mix" workflow, there is a mix down button next to the transport, this allows you to select your bounce down signal.
      alternatively, if you CREATE a master bus, you can choose it's output, and you'd wanna choose "virtual channel".. create a new track, and choose that same virtual channel as the input and mute the track so you do not get a feedback loop...
      then press record.
      hope this makes sense! perhaps I will cover this in a short, I've been planning a bunch of shorts.

    When using outboard do you need to make an adjustment for the D-A/A-D conversion, i.e. move the wav file position by a number of samples in the edit screen? Really enjoying this series, I've been away from recording for a few years and this is just the right level for me, so thanks a lot!

    Thank you for this series, Steve! I'm new to Luna (from Studio One) and it's very helpful. I'm having an unusual problem though that I just can't figure out. I have a bus set up for two rhythm guitars that I'm panning hard left and right. A couple of my reverb plugins I've tried on this bus aren't working in stereo Sunset Sound and Abbey Road Plates)... Meaning if I just solo the left guitar, reverb only comes out of the left speaker (nothing in the right). My inspirata plugin works as it should. If I send to a dedicated reverb bus, it's the same. They are in stereo in Studio One though. Any settings I might be overlooking or any ideas? Thanks!

      You can create mono and stereo busses in luna, be sure that you have chosen a stereo bus when you created it.
      If you’re not sure if yours was stereo or mono - you can confirm it’s mono or stereo by the meters in the mixer.
      Stereo will get two meter LED’s next to the fader, mono will have one.

      @@TheSteveKinney ah, I see that makes sense. I must have gotten it the other way around. I'm not a native speaker. 😉 Of course that's kind of silly of me to think that.
      I'm so deep into work, at the time and had little to none experience with Luna. It got my attention when they announced that it has "import session data" now. I can't work without session import data, as it is such an important part of my work flow.
      If Lunas import function is on part with Pro Tools, I will definitely be interested in trying it out. The obstacle being that I have to buy a UAD interface first. 😴 But your videos has been great and I will keep coming back.
      I'm actually fine with PT, but like the cleaner interface in Luna better. Looks like they took the annoying things from PT and arranged it in a more clever way. Kind of a blend of Logic and PT, if that makes sense? ☺️
      Oh, and better support for controllers like the SSL UF8, would be welcomed. Especially with midi control of plugins, like in Logic and many other DAW's. Kind of surprised to find out that they are lacking behind on that particular subject. 🤔
      Plugin control is a must for me. AVID finally did it right with S1 and plugin mapping.

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lydfar2392 sooo spot on with this comment mate!
      Yeah - PT is so bulky that it would be hard to imagine that session import is as good or better than PT - I couldn’t tell ya unfortunately! I’m sure it gets the job done but PT has just been the top dog for so long that they’ve really went over the top with every feature to the point that it kind of sucks to work in.
      But ya! You are right. They are really making the best of all worlds, picking the best from everyone else’s daw ha ha won’t be long until it’s on par!
      I’d HAVE to imagine that plugin control will be a sight to behold with Luna whenever they do implement it. Surely they are working on the best version of it out there. But that’s just my theory. Cheers!

    Great tutorial, thanks! One thing; how do you find the value and then compensate for any delay in the routing in and out to external hardware?

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there! Great question.
      1. Add a new track - have a 1 Sample size transient
      2. Route that out of to the external gear and return
      3. Hit record
      4. Manually measure the distance in samples between the original sample and the new one.
      5. Use the utility row in luna to either delay all tracks or move forward the other track.
      Hopefully that makes sense! A lot of extra work, but should be good.
      One thing I've noticed & not sure if this is sample accurate but a number of my sources that were external - I printed them back in as I'm bouncing down my session and the latency wasn't there after I actually capture the source to wav. give that a try and see how it impacts your latency. After recording it - seemed like it was aligned or at least, oddly enough - much much closer.
      Anyways, they haven't gotten the Automatic delay compensation just yet - but I'm sure it's coming. Hope this helps - cheers!

    Another great video man!! well done. Also thanks for the verb suggestion. Pure Plate seems to work well on vox..Just have a question about the bus routing vs. PT. I always remember having to create a bus track, add the plugin to said track and set the effect 100% WET, assign an input of BUS whatever number and then go into whichever track and send out to that bus via send. Not a ton different than LUNA.
    Here's my question; with LUNA I swear I saw in one of your videos or maybe another channel, where they were not using a bus track, but a regular audio track and doing it that way. Did I dream that? Is a bus track the only way or correct way to do that? And then for printing the effect, use the virtual track. I get that too. Just curious. I'm going to continue to dive into LUNA and at some point I'll just email you and set up a paid session. :)

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on mate!
      You’re not crazy, it’s totally possible and mega convenient.
      Create a new stereo track. Assign the input as a “virtual channel” - assign the output of the new track to where ever you wanna route it, masterbus, sub group etc.
      Take the track that you wanna send the effect to and use one of the sends in the sends panel - choose the corresponding virtual channel and send the effect.
      I prefer to do prefader. And I like to send unity gain or 100% of the signal - sometimes I like to send more to drive the input stage of the plugin module, for example studio d chorus and lexicon 224 distorts in a cool way.
      You’ll have to turn input monitoring on at this point. But you can now simple hit record and “print” your effect to wav - turn off the DSP based plugins and save resources. 😎
      Cheers!

      you're only real option is to use outboard gear going INTO the session...
      using outboard gear during mixing is essentially impossible because there is no real way to measure the latency because the latency changes each time the session is loaded due to the way the Apollo will load DSP.

    I am considering changing to Luna after watching your video! Really good
    Do you recommend me switching to Mac to Luna from being a windows user using ableton live ? If so , which Mac would be sufficient between the Mac Studio M2 Max 512gb storage and 32gb of ram (that’s only option available) or Mac Studio M2 Ultra 1tb and 64gb ram (that’s the only option available)
    Also, I have an Apollo twin x quad and satellite octo but thinking of also getting an Apollo x 8 , will that improve my sound quality ect ?
    Does Luna let you insert more plugins on each track as much as you want as long as there is enough dsp? And does Luna give you real analog sound quality ?

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A lot to unpack there:
      1. I think you could truly be on any OS - so long as the tools you need are there.. if Ableton isn't doing what you need it to do, and the tool you might need is Luna, well... Luna hasn't hit windows yet.. no telling when it will.. so, maybe a Mac isn't a bad idea, as you can use both Luna and Ableton... additionally, the Apollo's have an easier time with Core audio than with Asio4all. Mac IMHO is a better system overall for audio.. not trying to get into a flame war, just my personal experience.
      2. You'd obviously enjoy a better experience with the M2 Ultra.. if it's within the budget, I'd be going for that. If it's stretching, you'd be able to squeeze the performance out of the Max. I'm rocking the m1 Max still.. and it's sweet, there are moments where I hit the top end of what it can do, but it's usually when I have a bunch of programs running in addition to a large project. No matter what computer you get... you can expect to need to replace it after about 3 - 4 years.. especially if you are doing Operating system updates (which is a no no.. never do this)... if you don't do software updates, you can live with it for much longer.
      3. the Twin X has some of the best converters in the lineup.. the x8 is basically the exact same, the difference would be unnoticeable and you'd have more I/o as well as DSP, which is always a good thing.
      4. Luna allows for 8 plugins per channel, plus included tape inserts. DSP is limited by the amount available in your system, but you can potentially run up to a total of 8 DSP powered plugins per live input channel now. 4 of which would be "printed" into the track, and the other 4 would be monitored.
      5. Because Luna is largely powered by UA's modeling which is commonly understood to be one of the best modeling in the industry... it certainly CAN sound analogue, but other daw's could do the same if you utilize the same plugins.. so - that part of it isn't necessarily more analogue than any other daw... HOWEVER... it's the WORKFLOW that makes it feel more analogue and gets you to an analogue place faster. That's kind of what sets it apart.
      Cheers,
      Steve

      What buffer rate do you use and how many tracks and plugins is your session and the cpu load if you don’t mind me asking just to have an idea ?

    hey Steve - thanks for a wonderful series that’s helping tremendously in getting to grips with Luna. One questions - any idea why exporting mixdowns take so long? for eg. A 2” test track with about 3 audio tracks and 3 software instrument tracks took more 6 minutes to export as an mp3 of “high” quality. Just wondering if that’s normal or I’m doing something wrong! Cheers.

      Hey Vikram, great to see ya in the comments again, and glad you're enjoying the series, a couple more coming soon.
      That said, I've heard of the slow export thing. I'm not sure what's causing it. Could be an AU plugin that's not a UAD plugin. Could be system/hardware related. Truthfully not sure here.
      If you really wanna test this out to find out -. try disabling all plugins and exporting again, if it's faster, then you know if might be one of them.
      If you can recreate this successfully each time - you may be able to hit the "feedback" button at the top to send it off to UA to get fixed.
      Cheers brotha!

      @@TheSteveKinney hey Steve - thanks as always for getting back! I'll try without the plugins. I have a set of Toontrack instruments - drums and keys - on two tracks. Hope that's not what causing the problem though!

      @@versuswhat id imagine it’s not the drums - as I’m exporting with those as well all the time.
      I’d bet it might be in a plugin.

    Another great video... but still having trouble when you say the keyboard shortcut instead of what actual function you are employing. If we don't know the shortcut by heart, we don't know what you are doing.

      I feel ya bro. I definitely will take note of this.
      It’s kind of funny cause I am weird. I literally only learn functions by shortcuts. Just how I think about it.

      Not entirely a shortcut.
      But double click the value and type zero and return.

    Question when you run a vocal to a bus would you make it stereo or mono? On my effect bus like reverb delay etc it will be stereo. When I record vocal is mono. I usually run my Vocal to a mono bus but just wondering if stereo will be good

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you’re bussing your source to effects - you will want it stereo.
      Actually come to think of it - I never really have a situation where I’d want a mono bus.

      @@TheSteveKinney thanks for the response back. Effects yeah I bus out stereo. But I’ve been running my lead vocal to bus mono but then run into output is stereo. I just do bus stereo from now on lead vocals. I’ve heard people bus mono before but I think so for certain instruments.

      @@CODEOFCONDUCTENT. well I mean the vocal track should be mono - but effects like reverb and delay are stereo - so definitely bus those effects in stereo. 😎

    I saw that there are only 8 insert slots to add plugins.... can they be increased? how you do it?

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      8 per channel is it.
      If you’re using tape plugins, they have a specific tape slot.
      Additionally, if you’re using effects like reverb and delay they should be on its own bus. Not on the track.
      If you need more than 8…. You probably should be re-recording the signal lol or you are running your spatial effects incorrectly.
      But yes. 8 is the ceiling.
      I suppose you could hack this into virtually unlimited amounts by creating numerous busses or virtual channels and routing the output of the track into that new track to get another 8 inserts and so on…
      But I digress. Great question.
      Cheers mate!
