What I got out of this is that Yahtzee likes Bayonetta as a friend.

You know someone complained to me about Bayonetta today saying: How would you like it if the main playable character was an overly sexualised male character that constantly uses his charms in a flaunting way.

Besides which, the argument isn't that NO female characters should be overly sexualised, or that NO overly sexualised male characters exist, just that there's a huge skew in the direction of sexy ladies and much better clothed men. Bit of balance wouldn't go amiss.
Basically this. Men and women alike are overly sexualized in games because nobody wants to play as someone that is fugly. Do women want a fat whale as a main character? Of course not, and guys don't want a weak nerd with pimples all over his face as a main character either.

There are exceptions. The Oddworld games have you playing as a skinny fish alien thing. Basically a nerd. Also the Monkey Island games, Guybrush is a nerd and those games are great. Sturggling to think of a game with a female thats ugly or nerdy or whatever.

She actually says "Flock off" in her combos, which is still a reference to a past Platinum game (DMC), but also makes sense when you realize that most of her enemies have wings.

Fun fact, Bayonetta was both designed and created by a woman (Mari Shimizaki) and IIRC she even said she finds it kind of cool how her power is linked to her hair and how she looses clothes with stronger attacks.
And since we are on the topic of sexualized characters. Remember DMC 3? Of course you do great game, at the beginning of the game Dante walks out with his shirt off and you do the entire first level with his shirt off. Now this becomes and costume after you beat the game. However unlike all the other costumes in the game it does nothing for the character. Some would give you infinite devil trigger or something around those lines. This costume however, all it did was make Dante shirtless. No extra power ups or anything. Who was that for? Men? Pfft don't kid yourself. And don't give me that power fantasy crap. Or how about Chris's costume in RE5? Or Leon S Kennedy in general?
Bayonetta owns her sexuality, she is attractive while she kicks major ass. She is intelligent as well as brave and admirable. She has qualities most people would want but more importantly she has the qualities that fall in line with actual feminism but some people don't like that.
I don't think you can win when it comes to making women appear sexy in games. Why?
In real life, women can choose to use sexuality as a tool of empowerment, a weapon even. They can be as sexy, as slutty, and as depraved as they want, and have the right to not be judge for it, because it is their choice.
Video game characters are created. They obviously do not have the ability to choose to be who they want to be, or what they want to do. They are 100% at the whim of their creator. A creator who can make them do anything, be anything, and essentially be a soulless pawn for their imagination.
This is the real problem people who dislike sexualized women in gaming have: The lack of control and choice. Even presenting a character who has a personality of a woman who is doing just as I said above: using sexuality as a tool or weapon, doesn't work because again, you have simply made the character that way, it wasn't the characters choice.
But then you start to realize how ridiculous that is. "We can't give video game characters a choice, they don't have an actual ability to choose, they aren't real. Should we stop making characters all together, because these figments of our imagination can't choose if they want to be figments of our imagination?" No, obviously.
However you would most certainly have certain people say that certain types of characters shouldn't be made, and that their stories shouldn't be told. And then you would have arguments about what is and is not an "appropriate" character/story. You see because it isn't enough to simply create a more varying amount of stories and characters, to appeal to all groups, to give everyone something they like. Because it isn't about a lack of things they do like, its about to much of what they don't like, and trying too compromise with them will not be enough.
So you keep making games about big breasted women playing volleyball, or killing giant monsters with their hair, or exploring forgotten tombs, or defeating evil space pirates. Because those who complain, and degrade, and seek to destroy; will only be happy when they have done so. And all they deserve is to be ignored.
And correct me if I'm wrong but isn't one of the things feminists fight for is the ability to be sexual if they so desire and not be judged for it? Which I agree women should be allowed that they are no different than men. But if we objectify or sexualize women because they happen to be attractive because of a simple design choice isn't that the antithesis of feminism? It's kind of self defeating really.
All I have to say is that you wrote that very well and I highly respect your logic. Wish we had more people in the world that would put some critical thinking towards art and character design who try to figure out why a character is designed in a specific way, if it has any deliberation at all.

I have to say I am an incredibly prudish person and I have no problem with Bayonetta's sexualisation. It just fits her character very well.
Actually, I’m in a game history class this semester, and we had to do a compare and contrast paper, and I did it on the sexualities of Bayonetta and Lara Croft. When it came fo Bayo, as much as I like her agency and presented ownership over her sexuality in game, she was created by a man Hideki Kamiya, and designed by a female Shimazaki. She still has this ‘male gaze’ involved, because Kamiya used some of his fetish (glasses) to create his ‘ideal’ woman.
"Flock off" is what she says in the middle of combos. It's a reference to Dante saying "Flock off, feather face!" at a more avian-style of boss, back when Devil May Cry was at least trying to avoid a "Fuck you, no, fuck YOU" exchange between characters.
The other point where she swears is a bit out of key with the rest of the game, but the rest of it is just... Enzo. And Enzo is alright.

I love muting Yahtzee's video the first time I watch it, and then rewatch with the audio, just to see how many of Yahtzee's points I managed to catch from the visuals.

See, people bitch about the Wii U, but Yahtzee is right! The games on the system are about FUN and unlike the other two big systems on the market, it has WAY more exclusives. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my PS4, but once you've played one boring brown and black action game, you've essentially played them all.

I find it funny how Yahtzee finds the idea of having sex with Bayonetta to be next to impossible, but remember, the first game thrived to challenge the player in its gameplay, so it makes perfect sense to make also the aforementioned sex with the main character, to also be challenging XD

The thing people seem to forget when they complain about female characters being too sexualised, is the exact same thing is done to male characters. Nathan Drake is sexy as hell, Ezio Auditore and Arno Dorian, suave as fuck, Talion ruggedly handsome, Solid Snake is also ruggedly handsome, hell even Old Snake is handsome in a Tom Selleck kind of way. The only difference is men don't have as many features to exaggerate.

The thing is that most gamers, or at least hard-core gamers, are male, and maybe 70-100% of developers are male. The reason for few stereotypical females in games is because the writers and developers are just extending what they know, and the roles that are in most games are really only ever filled by men, if anybody at all. It looks like women are only now being allowed to fill combat roles in SOME parts of the US military, but only three women so far have passed Marine combat training, but they are the only three and it hasn't been determined yet whether they're capable of filling these roles. And that only covers modern military shooters.
Most of the female designs that people complain about end up being designed by females anyway.

Here's a new word we can throw around 'Idealized'; Bayonetta is an Idealized character.
If you need an explanation of idealization look at the DC universe where most of the heroes, male and female, embody traits that many of us would want to have including strength, physical fitness, and most importantly confidence.
Many female characters are idealized such as Samus, Faith, Lara Croft, and female Shepard. So why is Bayonetta hated for the exact same reason?

I actually completely forgot about that half-hearted prediction. I just came here for largely unrelated reasons and laughed out loud when he said that. That's akin to RLM saying JJ Abrams should have directed the Star Wars prequels before Lucasfilm was even sold to Disney.

Well, despite what people seem to believe, ONE sequel doing the copy paste thing doesnt make it like CoD. Try 8 or 9 more sequels doing just that and THEN its like CoD.
More of what you like is a hit and miss to whether its good or bad (simply depending on how its re-pasted). More of what you like for the tenth time at full price is a money milking scheme.
As someone who has played Bayonetta 2, it did pull it off better than CoD. It felt more like it was fixing what the first game had problems with. Like less gimmicky stages for example. If there is a third game (which there most likely will be), it will probably be much different, but not too different.

MW3, BO2, and Ghosts, with some people saying BO1 but even that is debatable. That's 3, maybe 4 if you're cynical, out of their entire series. Really, if Bayonetta was a woman in real life, Feminists would be praising her as a strong and independent woman who is expressive about her sexuality. I find it interesting when people whine about what "bad role models" females in video games make but then turn a blind eye when Kim Kardashian's ass is hanging out on a magazine cover. I guess young girls IN REAL LIFE only follow the example of fictional game characters and could never possibly be negatively influenced by powerful celebrities IN REAL LIFE. Then again, this movement's full of hypocrisy anyway. Anita doesn't like women in fiction to have makeup because it's a "gender identifier" when she clearly wears makeup in every one of her videos and cries about damsels in distress but doesn't find any irony in crying about every single troll that comes her way and begging for sympathy.
And on top of that, Cereza's a maternal figure. She's playful yet care about the characters around her. Luka, Jeane, Balder (to a degree), her younger self, and Loki. When she actually cares and save these characters, it makes me wonder why those keep calling her a "bad role model".

To be fair, there have been a bunch of balance changes that Yahtzee wouldn't really care to talk about, like how Wicked Weaves no longer do ridiculous damage, considering that that role is handled by Umbran Climax (new age DMC3 Devil Trigger).
Speaking of Devil Trigger, Bayo says Flock Off during combos, but he wouldn't know the Hideki Kamiya lore, so that's forgivable.
Also, I don't get why Yahtzee loves Dark Souls for its difficulty that forces you to get good, but dislikes the ranking systems which encourage you to get good without forcing you to get *that* good thanks to checkpoints at every door. I'm not saying he's wrong, but if he would like, it would be pretty cool for him to elaborate on why he feels differently about the two, though I have an inkling to why that is the case.
Playing a whole mission all over again just because of one section where you got hit is not a challenge, its annoying, the only thing you have to do in Dark Souls is to not die and give up (since you have infinite continues, there is no game over, its only you to decide to give up or not) instead of some ranking system, Devil May Cry 4 had a better ranking system

I personally really hate the backlash on 'serious' games, I like it when things are cohesive and immersive (yeah), rather than strictly 'fun' or 'entertaining'.
Well, "Fun" is not how I would describe a videogame. Mostly because I dont have a f*cking clue what people consider to be fun really. Saints Row is one series I cant understand the hype about it...well, I do, it's not GTA, so it must be "fun" for some people. But I have more fun with Red Faction: Guerrila than with SR 3 and 4.

It's like Hugh Jackman's character on Prisoners (btw he looks exactly like Joel in that movie). He has a reason for doing what he does but I still cant justify his actions, because I would never do something like that.
About Fun, I think I can consider something "cohesively functional" as fun. Saint Row was kitsch but TLOU was more fun overall.

I totally agree, though I'm actually quite fond of very monotone experiences that really wash over you (like Limbo, or ambient music). In my opinion there doesn't have to be something that offsets what you previously experienced. I like variation and contrast, but I think you can get that by switching between games if you're in need of something else.
But there are already so many brown serious games already that they are starting to feel repetitive (specially for reviewers that have to play everything that's released)
I think the problem is that most (or many) "realistic" games favor "realism" (gotta use that term loosely) and heavy-handed narratives over actual gameplay mechanics. Maybe when I was younger I was able to tolerate more story driven games. Nowadays, I'm more interested in the qualities that make video games a unique art form (i.e. gameplay, design, mechanics and all of the theory/philosophy that goes behind it). That's what immersion means to me. It's the point in which the barriers between the pictures on the screen, the controller, and my hands disintegrate.
Think about something like SotC. It's a game focused on immersion and a minimalistic narrative as a means evoke emotions and yet it never loses sight on what makes it a great game: the actual gameplay and interesting mechanics.
tl;dr - story/emotional investment/immersion/whatever should come out through the gameplay and not by dragging the player through cutscenes of various degrees of interactivity.

I am now going to always imagine the console making sweet blocky love to the game in question whenever it updates.
The more I played of the game more I noticed the differences; their are under water sections and an ability to swim, some of the tombs that hold hearts and pearls have a minigame where you collect the pieces, the levels are more open, linear but you can explore a bit more, that powerup means you can spend your power attacking bosses that have no punishment and there is that mech you get in one of the later chapters. And things have been improved, no more press button to not die, which means either restarting the chapter or getting a lower grade. The game looks a lot nicer, higher res textures and this city looks better designed.

Stanley In any practical situation (IE: Bayonoetta isn't given Plot Armor to justify the reckless armor choice) somebody using sexuality as a weapon is highly likely to die, as all it takes is somebody who isn't putting up with your bullshit or anybody with a real weapon.
Lily Peet In any real situation, using sexuality as a weapon would also take a drastically different meaning then what Bayonetta uses. See any Femme fatale in Noir thrillers ( Novaks character in Vertigo comes to mind) or the sniper in Full metal jacket.
I also had trouble using the game pad. You hold it at first and you're like, "maybe this won't be so bad", then you play for a few minutes and realize you might now have arthritis. But being able to play Bayonetta was worth it.

So basically, if you enjoyed Bayonetta the first time around here's more of it. Which is something I don't mind, I don't even mind that it's exclusive to a single console (although it's REALLY weird that it's the Wii U. It's like if Nintendo bought up Saints Row and put it on the Wii U) but what I do mind (aside from the fact I have to get ANOTHER CONSOLE with NO BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY) is that the Wii U is going to have that freaking touch pad that's basically USELESS. You can't go into intense gaming combat with a touch pad and a controller built like a brick!

umm you can play wii games on the wiiu.
That's why you get a pro-controller... also Wii U is backwards compatible with the Wii; not that it matters much given everyone and their mums has a Wii, but ya know...
You can play Wii Games on the Wii U and can even use every single controller the wii has ever put out there. (And if you hack your wii-mode (vWii) then it's even possible to play gamecube games on the wii u)

Not being mean here, but, I did some real listening, thank you very good hearing, and discovered she's not saying fuck off, but rather flock off. Trust me when I first heard it, I thought the same thing. But when I went back and listened to it, like extremely hard, I heard flock off. And I can understand the miss hearing, it's her accent. But no, I'll say it one more time. Sorry for repeating myself, it was flock off. Not fuck off.
