      Derpy guy generic "hero" runs through beautiful city, climbs and jumps buildings and fight far too easy battles with a non-existent fighting system?
      basically, *ALL "ASSASSIN'S CREED" GAMES HAVE BEEN THE VERY SAME FROM THE FIRST TITLE ON!*
      they are all equally lame and if it hadn't been for the naval battles in "AC III" and "Black Flag", those games would have been dead to me.
      "Unity" is about the biggest pile of failure Ubisoft ever released.

    Bioshock Infinite was a beautifully rendered game set in a vibrant, imaginative world...or so I have been told. I wouldn't know. I spent the whole game staring at the floor and the baseboards scavenging for f*cking coins.

    • @Proctor_Conley
      @Proctor_Conley 10 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I was spending the game disgusted by the linear gameplay, shallow storytelling, and simple plot.
      The only thing I found to be interesting was the setting (Racist Disneyland: USA Conservative Heaven) and even that was boring as everyone wouldn't stop shooting or I wasn't allowed to look around.

    • @Darkerxz
      @Darkerxz 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Proctor Conley SIMPLE PLOT?! I must be very fucking dumb cuz that game is goddamn confusing

    • @TheDrCN
      @TheDrCN 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Bruce Wayne
      It can be simple and confusing at the same time. It's an easy trick. All you have to do is not make sense.
      That said, up until the end, I didn't mind the story too much (I watched an LP, but didn't play it because I don't really like shooters). I would agree with Proctor Conley that the setting is ultimately more appealing than the story though.

    • @Exxo107
      @Exxo107 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Proctor Conley Let's compare it to The Last of Us (which is even more overrated). TLoU has linear design and gameplay as well, the shallow storytelling of "survive in a world were everyone is an asshole", simple plot and a reused setting and story. So about the same level as Bioshock, except the characters and setting in Bioshock didn't want to make me blow my brains out so TLoU takes the cake as the most overrated game of last year

    • @69johndz
      @69johndz 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      In all actuality, both games were my favorite of the year. I just had some major disappointments with a lot of the game changes in Bioshock Infinite. And I do not think that BI is overrated, but more over hyped. I loved the story and the characters. However, I hated the fact that they turned Bioshock into a straight forward shooter. I did not like TLoU in the beginning. I was going to return it once I realized that there was very little tension due to the fact that there are no consequences to dying. However, once Joel and Ellie hit the road, I was totally hooked.

Now, if you say _you_ really liked it, that's your opinion and the worst thing someone can do is say you have a shit opinion, but then that's just their opinion and you can safely disregard it because it's not like you have a special type of disease that can only be cured through other people's acceptance... or do you?

    I like that people disliked Bioshock Infinite. I for one am obsessed with it but if everyone liked it, than no developer would try something different. I wasn't a fan of Spec Ops the Line but the story was fascinating, and The Last of Us couldn't grab me but I could easily see the attraction. It's that kind of variety that makes the gaming medium so unique. From story filled works of art, to Nintendo's fun for the sake of it; there is a game for everyone. Oh and Double Dash will always be the best racing game...

    Like my fellow Alien fanboys, I had high hopes for Aliens: Colonial Marines. It's ABUNDANTLY clear that the people who wrote it had never paid attention to the film. Aliens was about mankind's overconfidence being our undoing; it was not about how "badass" the M41 Pulse Rifle is. The Xenomorph is an apex predator, evolved to survive at any cost; NOT a bag of acid that ignores "natural selection" as it blindly runs up to you in a wide open map. Thankfully, Alien Isolation held true to the franchise's roots. So our hopes and dreams weren't shattered like a Faberge egg in a pinball machine for the 3rd time in the past decade. *Glares at Alien vs Predator: Requiem with molten hatred*

      Well at least Alien Isolation made up for the acid blood-filled mess of Colonial Marines by making the Xenomorph so terrifying that most of the game was spent crawling about in hopes of reaching the next save point. Or making it out alive.

    Man, watching this video, I realized how fucking shit 2013 was for video games in general. Yes, there were a few good ones, like Yahtzee named. But there was so many more bad ones. And the thing is, you put Bioshock Infinite against games that are considered the best by Yahtzee generally, like Wind Waker, Portal, and Spec Ops The Line, and it pales in comparison. But the bad games were SO bad, it stands out.

      Nah, if you look at those games, Bioshock Infinite stands head and shoulders above the rest, ESPECIALLY Wind Waker. And I also have to decree that what with coming off an incredibly strong year for fighting games in 2013, an unbeliavable amount of artistic masterpieces being released both in the big budget and the indie side, and what with the console generation launching, 2013 was absolutely one of the greatest years in the history of video gaming.

      It's not impossible at all. It's a good game. But a year is a very long time in gaming, many excellent games came out. GTA V's Game of The Year status on other sites were never about its quality. It's a popular game, and a lot of critics are too afraid of their audience to come out and say they think something else is better. Not Yahtzee

    • @IOutDoSyndicate
      @IOutDoSyndicate 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fiktív Miki No, not Yahtzee, because he's too busy rating highly of games that are no more content than a satirical joke, shit references, and euphemisms. Looking at you, Saint's Row.

      @fiktivmiki9530 10 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      IOutDoSyndicate
      You completely miss the point of his reviews, then. He rates games on not technical stuff like graphics, but by how much fun it is to play. Back then, everyone gave GTA IV 10/10 because it was well-crafted and had lots of stuff to do. Only Yahtzee pointed out that "...aand it has plenty of faults and is boring as hell." He rated Saints Row 2 better because it was a non-stop fun joyride. And time proved him right. If I had to pop in one of those two right now, I'd play the hell out of Saints Row 2 while my GTA IV collects dust.

    • @IOutDoSyndicate
      @IOutDoSyndicate 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fiktív Miki To each their own, but I don't enjoy mindless fun. I've beaten GTA IV 6 times and couldn't imagine doing another playthrough in SR. Maybe because there's nothing to do. Maybe because the series isn't innovative. Maybe because the quality of the game and its content are on par with a one man indie developer. What would you do in SR2 that you couldn't do in GTAIV, or that GTAIV did worse?

  • @GrumpyBritishJedi
    @GrumpyBritishJedi 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I agree on the majority of Yahtzee's choices here (although to my shame I haven't played Bioshock Infinite yet). Anyway, I rather think MGR would have have been somewhat higher on the good list because it is a really good game. Despite a few things that I won't spoil, I really thought the combat mechanics and story were very nice indeed. It's nice to see a proper single player game amid all the multiplayer titles where 9 year-olds suddenly grow a pair of balls for no apparent reason.

    My picks for 2013?
    Hmm.. Rayman Legends. Sure, it has some idiotic design choices there and there, and dissapointing final levels, but it's still brilliant.
    Metal Gear Rising, because good god does the entire game change on Very Hard, which forces you to realise the depth in the combat system and then master it. And those boss battles are freaking awesome, and controls.. actually have no flaw. It's a timing based game so if you're getting hurt: your timing is off, you didn't see the incoming attack and thus couldn't block or dodge it, you forgot what animations cannot be canceled, or the camera just screwed you over which is the biggest flaw of the game. Oh and it's short, but that's pretty much all I can complain about it.
    Stanley Parable, because.. why are you even reading this? This is my opinion and I'm willing to defend it if you begin to question it. Isn't that what people usually do with their opinions anyway, form them based on your thoughts and form explanations for them so you can understand better why you even think so in the first place? Seriously, why are you even reading this if you will just end up complaining about me being a different person? Do you have something against being different, wanting to be someone who you are, instead of some copy pasted person based on norms of the society you live in? I didn't make this comment for you anyway, so stop reading it. I said stop. Stop reading.
    .
    .
    .
    Why are you still reading this? Do you expect me to make some sort of joke or analysis based on the nature of the game's writing? Because if you are, then surely you have noticed that I'm not very good at it. I didn't make this to entertain you, I made this just so I could express my opinion on the internet. Sure, I will get judged for it, but I'm willing to stand up for my opinion as well, and help others see why I think of it this way, like a civilised person. ... A civilised person can sometimes act like a child, don't pretend like you have never done that!
    .
    .
    .
    Stop reading me. There's nothing to see here anymore. Oh? You mean those dots? Well they are there just for the sake of connecting the statements together that belong under the same to.. actually no, they are there for the sake of artistic vision. Are you questioning my artistic vision? ... Screw this, I'm done with trying to please everyone. I work hard for my comments and then you just go and ruin it with your thoughts.. I quit.
    Why are you still here? Are you still expecting that joke? But you already saw that my sense of humor is awful, so why do you still keep reading? I mean, isn't this painful text to read, self-aware and trying to be clever, but ends up being pretentious? Why would you do this to yourself, why would you read something that brings you displeasure? Just out of pure curiosity? ... but I have no joke to make, so leave me alone!
    STOP DEMANDING THINGS FROM ME!!! I'm not making a joke, alright?
    Oh right, this is sort of meta already, but.. okay, what do you want? Just something funny? Alright here: This sentence is a lie.
    What? I have different sense of humor.
    What now? Expecting some sort of closure? ... No.
    I said no.
    No means no.
    No!
    No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No!
    I have no idea what I'm doing with my life.
    There, are you happy now? It's a closure, referencing how I as a writer have no idea why I even made this and.. you're not even interested in the explanation, now are you?
    Fine: Congratulations! You reached the crappy ending, because this is just a comment so there are no multiple endings anyway!
    There, is it better now? No? Well screw you too.

      dkill34 To me, Day One GI doesn't count. It was made by an indie studio, and considering an indie studio could be comprised of industry veterans or guys that just picked up programming, you can't really treat it the same way you would a AAA title.
      In this case, DOGI was simply a game made by an incompetent studio. Ride to Hell was a horrible game made by a fairly competent (technically speaking, anyway) studio. Not only that, but one owned by a major publisher and given actually decent funding.
      If we included every shit indie game that came out, the list would be buried with them.

    Eh I don't think Bioshock Infinite deserves the praise it gets. Fascinating story and quite pretty, but the gameplay is clunky and the level design is abysmal compared to all Shock games before it. It's just running and shooting from one set piece to the next, I wasn't compelled to push on for the fun, but just to hear more of the narrative. That is not good for a game in my honest opinion.
    System Shock 2 and Bioshock 1/2 cleverly wove the story in with the gameplay, Infinite did not, it is a very watered down experience and it disappointed me greatly. It's not a bad game, but I just wish people would see it's not up to par of the previous Shock games in terms of gameplay.

    • @TARINunit9
      @TARINunit9 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      1) Keep in mind it's only Yahtzee's #1 by comparison. I'm willing to bet Portal 2 from 2011 and possibly even Spec Ops from 2012 would beat out Bioshock Infinite
      2) Gonna disagree with you on the "bad level design" by virtue of the skyrails. I fucking love those things and they make for great level design. Also the museum was above average... moving on
      3) The supposed "disconnect between story and watered-down gameplay" is actually intentional. It's a metaphor for Booker's PTSD
      4) Infinite was actually my first foray into the Bioshock series and Ken Levine games. Are you saying it only gets better from here? :D

    • @ORLY911
      @ORLY911 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** 1) Well I was speaking in general to the praise Infinite has gotten, not its place on the list, which is perfectly fine. Like I said, not a bad game, but in my experience not great, but still a lot better than 95% of other stuff that came out this year.
      2)I do like the skyrails too, that was one part of them I liked. However, they have been done before, specifically in Metroid Prime 3, though they do of course look a lot more thrilling in Infinite.
      3)Oh? That interests me. I always intended to go back and actually finish the game, guess this is a good thing to keep in mind while I play.
      4) Yes. get the original Bioshock for however cheap it is now :) Bioshock 2 isn't as good story wise as 1, but has pretty satisfying gameplay that's a bit better than 1's was.
      System Shock and System Shock 2 are also great games to experience, but they're much harder, so keep that in mind if you get them.

    • @PaintNUrTaint
      @PaintNUrTaint 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I pretty much feel the exact opposite. Never got the praise the original Bioshock got. The story and visuals were excellent but the gameplay was more tedious than fun. Like you mentioned I felt like I was only completing the game to see how the story ended. Overall still a good game, but I've seen it ranked as one of the top ten video games of all time. To me that's just ridiculous.
      Infinite kept me more entertained with some of the new mechanics and equally great story/visual. At the end of the day it probably was the best game I've played this year.

      Evan Ash Oh, someone thinks they're clever :P So have I. When I say gameplay, I mean the tonics, plasmids and all that have purpose within the story, their presence directly influenced the events of Rapture, using them was in character to the atmosphere, per say. In Infinite, there would have been no real difference if Vigors existed or not, they had no impact on the actual story. The mechanics of the vending machines were a direct comment on the policies and state of Rapture.
      The same is true of the predecessor, System Shock 2. everything about hacking and modules, all your upgrades is part of the story, not just a gameplay thing.

      It kind of made sense, but doesn't entirely adhere to certain ideas it presents. And the story isn't generic; the gameplay is, and much worse off for it. The story is just a disjointed mess of unconnected and unexplored "big ideas" that are incredibly impressive at first glance but deflate like fucking bouncy castles once you think about them for all of five minutes.

      I disagree. Elizabeth was bad. Her character made no sense regarding the situation she was/is in. Why the hell is a girl that grew up in near-complete isolation bubbly and sociable? Bioshock Infinite wasn't flawless, but it is completely understandable why it is "Number One". I think the Bioshock series ended extremely well and the 1st one and Infinte Juxtapose fantastically. The combat in Infinite is solid with the skyhook and while the story is pretentious,it's not boring. It's interesting and at the end of the day IT'S JUST A FUCKING GAME.

    • @ddolyniuk
      @ddolyniuk 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Honestly Bioshock Infinite's combat was a generic shootemup with hooks and a very underwhelming ability to warp in cover/skyhooks. Overall the actual mechanics were pretty bland behind the veil of hype. The spectacle and graphics along with thought provoking story line made the game good though. I don't however like their explanation for vigors. But hey that's all just my opinion :)

    • @TreasonousBastard
      @TreasonousBastard 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      trickyty
      The storyline wasn't thought-provoking in the least IMO. It brought up issues that could be thought-provoking in certain contexts, but just sort of waved them around and didn't do anything more except to show us that things fairly universally accepted as bad by today's ethical standards were bad. It was just like: "Hey there were some pretty messed up racist and nationalist aspects of 19th/early 20th C. America huh? Here's what it would be like if they were enacted in a floating steampunk sky city!" Okay, thanks for that. It's not exactly Thoreau.
      I mean I'd call anything political about it more of a backdrop or a setting element than a story element.

      bboythekidstudios If I missed some deep meaning there beyond what I commented on, by all means go ahead and enlighten me as to what it was, but I didn't see any really meaningful points being made in Infinite. The original Bioshock was about an attempted Ayn-Randian "paradise" gone dystopian and wrong, which is salient because that's not something that has ever actually existed (and no the U.S. doesn't count for reasons that I won't go into here in the interest of not posting a text wall), but *is* something that certain people today think would be great. Infinite on the other hand was, as far as I saw, poking a stick at things that *have* existed and the vast majority of thinking people now recognize were not in any way good. Okay it turned them up to 11 so to speak, but that's just a sort of ideological caricature.

    • @bboythekidstudios
      @bboythekidstudios 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay for starters, none of what you're complaining about is even a central theme of the story. You see, Infinite is a completely different story from the first bioshock, though all the things you're complaining about with the racism and nationalism will try to convince you otherwise, because they're meant as a diversion and aren't actually as important to the story as the game want's you to think. The game assumes that you've already played the first two bioshocks (or at least the first one) and tries to convince you that it will be a giant social commentary romp like the first one was by throwing all these social themes at you all at once. What makes the twist ending so perfect is not JUST that booker was comstock the entire time, or that Elizabeth was his daughter, but that the game's story convinced you that it would be a giant social commentary romp, when it was really a much more personal story about a man coming to terms with his guilt and finally taking responsibility for it.

    Not gonna lie....2013 was absolute SH!T for video games, you know it has to be bad when the common #1 of the year is either The Last of Us or Bioshock Infinite, if it was any other year, both games would have made #4 AT BEST. Dear, game developers I am disappoint in you for 2013.

      I totally agree. There was'nt one game I wanted this year. The only game I got was Deus Ex: Human Revolution:Directors Cut. And that's technically from 2 years ago, but much improved.

      Wasn't *too* shit, but it had its fare of problems, and a hell of a lot of controversy with the idiocracy of major gaming developers, publishers, and manufacturers. That said, 2012 was a great renaissance in gaming, and this year was the continuation, though there were more mistakes than last year.

      All the Bioshock games have been bland, boring linear shooters. Slap a big gun in someones hand and make some pretty looking environments and that's all you need to make gamers jizz themselves these days.

      Zexx4 I concur, this year was shit for most games,only reason why the last of us was considered decent, is that it was a new exclusive for the PS3, I mean we will never have games that were as innovative as Half-Life was, or have a story half as decent as Portal 1.

    I wonder how many people in this comment section are salty over bioshock infinite being number 1 just because he didn't give it to the last of us

    Yahtzee, if you want to be pretentious, you put Bioshock Infinite at #1 on the bottom 5... ;p

    Honestly, I found Bioshock Infinite kind of forgettable. After the ending left a sour taste with me, and that's even after watching several analyses on it, I just kind of forgot it and moved on. I know I'm in the minority here, but I just didn't really enjoy infinite that much

      That's understandable. But just because you didn't like it much doesn't mean it's not great or something. Bioshock Infinite is a game that appeals to a really small group. Even some Bioshock fans are not pleased with it, stating out that it's not a Bioshock game anymore. But when I compare it to many great games out there, Bioshock Infinite really shines. I even haven't seen any other game from 2013 that came close both gameplay- and storywise.

      ***** I am a Bioshock fan, and while I can see where my fellow fans would say it's not a true Bioshock game, I still felt very bioshock-esque, with its own "personal" touches. When I compare it to the original Bioshock, I of course consider the original better, and even when I compare infinite to other games I played from the same year, it still falls short, mainly because I saw little interest in it. For me, there was no replayability since the choices have no effect on the narrative, and my dislike of the story from the first reality-swap on just killed any chance of picking it up again. Admittedly, The Last of Us also fell short in terms of replayability for me, but at least I loved that game's storyline - unlike that of infinite.

      TheGospelgamer Well I can't change your opinion, but if you think that Infinite still felt very bioshock-esque, then I don't see why you shouldn't like it as much. When I hear the word 'Bioshock', two things come into my mind: master of storytelling and setting. And both games had those.
      I would say that Bioshock 1 had the better setting, while Infinite had the better story. The choices in Bioshock 1 weren't that impacting at all, it only effected the ending. The ending was pretty dissapointing for me. For a game that good, the ending felt pretty mediocre and short (both good and bad ending). Infinite had a much, much better ending. So I don't see why the lack of choices would bother much.
      I though that the story of Bioshock Infinite was much more colourful, complex, original, innovative, explorative than that of TLOU. I loved the storyline of TLOU too, but it was damn predictable, clichéd and, as yahtzee said, played it really 'safe'. So I don't see a contest here.
      I have played Infinite 3 times and it had a huge replayability for me. In each playthrough, I learned more about the story and the world of columbia, hence loving the game more and more.
      But anyway, each to their own i guess...

      ***** As far as the story goes, it just felt bland to me, primarily because of the jumps from reality to reality. It felt more like a cop-out of actual storytelling to me; more of way to send you to the next shooting gallery. And don't even get me started on the dead-but-not-really-but-kind-of ghost mom-but-not-really-mom thing. Not only was that part tedious to me from a gameplay perspective, but it also felt more like filler and forced exposition than anything else. And the ending, again, just didn't resonate with me. I get it, and I can see why others appreciate it, but I just flat out don't. As far as the original Bioshock's ending, I liked the good ending mainly because it didn't try to be too fancy; it gave me the outcome of my choice, and it felt good to have been able to rescue the little sisters and hear they went on to lead good lives. The bad ending admittedly fell short (or shorter, in most people's opinions) in that it basically just said, "Splicers came to the surface and started attacking people. The end."
      Moving right along, I preferred The Last of Us over infinite mainly because the characters and environment resonated more with me than infinite's did. Sure, there was depth to the characters in infinite too, but the only one who felt connectable there was Elizabeth; Booker felt more like a vessel for me than an actual character - which may be a part of why I didn't like the ending, but I digress. And while Columbia was aesthetically stunning, I just personally couldn't find a reason to like or appreciate anything in it other than Elizabeth herself. That, mixed with already knowing what was coming my way in the story with no deviation whatsoever, left me no reason to play through again.
      But you are right; to each his own. It's one of the great things about this world - we can all have different opinions and still get along if we try.
