The Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein, met with record companies in London to secure a record contract for the Beatles and was rejected by many, including Columbia, HMV, Pye, Philips, and Oriole. After Epstein had meetings with both EMI and Decca at the start of December 1961, a Decca A&R executive, Mike Smith, travelled to Liverpool to see the Beatles perform at The Cavern Club, and was impressed enough to ask Epstein to bring the band down to London for a test in Decca's recording studios, scheduled for 1 January 1962. About a month later, Decca rejected the Beatles. The executives' opinion was "guitar groups are on the way out" and "the Beatles have no future in show business. A brilliant headhunter named Dick Rowe, a visionary, saw clearly that these four Liverpool boys had no future.
But Epstein didn't give up. Shortly before 10am on Monday, February 11, 1963, The Beatles arrived at Abbey Road Studios in North London to work on their debut album, Please Please Me. Ten hours later it was all but recorded. Two days later, George Martin did a few overdubs, before the final mono and stereo masters were completed the following Monday.
It was a simple goal: get an entire album recorded in a day. It wasn’t planned for artistic reasons or to capture the energy of a fresh and exciting new band. It was practical and economical - a safe option for an untested band. But what nobody in the room knew was that The Beatles were about to change the course of popular music permanently - and they would do so in just ten hours.
And this is what we really find in the Beatles album and also in our cover, an enormous fresh and exciting energy, which has completely captivated us in this our first recording. Listen to the album carefully and enjoy this young, fresh and magical energy.
