    Our low brass clinician always says "if you can play a high e, you can play a high f. If you can play a high f, you can play a high g" and we all like "bro?"

      I would agree. Once I learned got comfortable with E, I became comfortable with F. After that, G wasn't that far away. I would say whenever I had to go up partials is when I started having a harder time reaching.

    I've got a student in our marching/concert band who came to us last year with almost no range above maybe D or Eb (on the staff). I finally got a chance to work with him during drumline camp this week (we invited horns to get extra practice in before full band camp next week) and got him up to an F. Then remembered seeing this video ages ago and applied that technique (had him get comfortable with F in 1st, then with F in 6th etc etc) and got him up to Bb for the first time ever!

    A lot of these points apply to playing altissimo notes on a saxophone as well. Obviously, you can't move a slide, but the way I learned them at first was by going up the chromatic scale to get to a G above the staff (ledger lines included), for example. Once I understood that feeling of the altissimo G, I was able to hit it consistently without having to hit slightly lower pitches first.

    For me, after having a problem with the high register, a great teacher had me set my embouchure on middle Bb, and comfortably slur down to low Bb, up to high. Once that was easy without any change he had me expand my range with Bb always being a pivot point. It sorted out my high range without sacrificing low or sound. That teacher was Chris Mowat, ex principal trombone of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

    Don’t know if this will help, but my voice teacher suggests thinking of higher notes as being off to the side, rather than up. So you stretch towards the right (if you imagine sitting at a keyboard) rather than upwards. It can keep your mind from thinking ‘I have to strain to reach those notes.’

I just keep re-watching some of your videos, where you are playing pretty long lines, and can't seem to wonder how can you play those in what looks like one breath ?(Duel of Fates bass trombone part especially) Is there some trick or is it just many hours of work put into endurance and control of breath ?

    I am a trombone player and I've played for 7 years. I think that I've been using too much pressure to force out high notes and it hurts my lips after playing them for a few minutes. Do you have any advice on how to play without hurting your lips? You seem to be able to play very high notes for extended periods of time. I've heard that you shouldn't play with pressure from the mouth piece, and after trying, I've lost almost an entire octave. Please help me out.

    • @josephbarbera9220
      @josephbarbera9220 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Make sure the mouthpiece isn’t pressing on your upper lip, this could lead to damage. Let your lower jaw and lower lip come out slightly and this will greatly protect the upper lip. Squeeze both upper and lower lips to form a small pin hole with airstream going up as if you are blowing the top of your hair. Lastly take your time learning higher notes, don’t move on to the next higher to you are completely playing the note underneath 💯 then move on to the next higher note and so on. Remember air support is a must! Good luck fellow trombonist!

    Recently i got music with notes very low, much lower than i play on my trombone (Bb below the staff and whatnot). Ive started doing this to practice those low notes. Bass trombone btw, not tenor.

    For the people in the comments wondering if this works, I've been playing for like 20-30 minutes now just following this warm up and practice and I'm already easily hitting notes I struggled with for weeks earlier. This is stuff they won't teach you until college if you're a music major, so get it early and you'll do so so much better as far as tone and range. Mouthpiece exercises absolutely help!!

      Depending on your playing level, it all depends on you. It also depends on your personal taste. The best advice I can give you is to go to a shop that carries different horns, such as Shires, Bach, Yamaha, etc. look around and most importantly play around on them too

      Pretty sure he already covered that elsewhere. It depends hugely on personal preference and the size of your wallet.
      If that's small I personally would recommend checking out the used instruments market with an open mind, looking for a quality, but not a specific, brand (and obviously in a good shape). It should be possible to find a good bargain there and that's the trombone you should start of with ;).
