Wild Bergamot: A Tasty and Medicinal Herb

- Today I'm here to talk to you about one of my favorite herbs: wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa)! It's great both for culinary and medicinal purposes, and is an herb I like to have on hand for its wide variety of uses. Watch the video to learn more!
**Note of caution: wild bergamot should not be used in medicinal quantities by people who are pregnant. The small amounts used for seasoning are generally fine, however. Please talk to your healthcare provider to make sure it's safe for you!

I’ve heard that wild bergamot was used as a substitute for real bergamot to replicate earl grey tea, after the Boston tea party. That’s how the plant it earned its common name, supposedly..

According to this site, different species of Monarda can be used interchangeably: www.herbalremediesadvice.org/bee-balm.html. It does list spotted bergmot (M. punctata) as a medicinal plant.

I got some seeds for this from a free seed library. I was wondering about why some said it was bee balm. I also was wondering about the citrus tree! when I was trying to look up it showed me the fruits and I was very confused 😅

Bergamot orange (Citrus bergamia) is a citrus tree and fruit that is a hybrid between bitter orange and lemon. It has a smooth yellow to green skin and pale, lemony flesh with lots of seeds. The essential oil of the skin is used to flavor Earl Grey tea. Many TH-cam videos and internet images show a green bumpy fruit, which is not Bergamot, but a Kaffir lime, sometimes called a Makrut lime. So, there is a whole lot of confusion happening all around.

Yes, the skin can be yellow to green, which is a function the light and temperature that it exposed to. As with a number of its cousin citrus, the fruit grows and matures on the tree, and when fully mature can stay on the tree until picked or wind blown off. The fruit will not ripen further after being picked, and skin color isn't a good indicator of ripeness, as fully mature fruit can be green colored. In some cases, market fruit that is mature, but still green, can be coaxed to change color to meet market expectations.
Bee balm/wild bergamot is pretty tall here in northern Illinois and it has rather large leafs and flowers, and it's the same lavender or light purple you're describing. So what is it?
Since it's got the light purple flowers, it's probably Monarda fistulosa (usually called wild bergamot.) However, it might be some local variety I'm not familiar with. Regardless, all plants in the Monarda genus are used similarly, so as long as you're sure of that, you can give it a try :)
I fell for "Bergamot". I thought wow, it's going to be so easy to make some tea and planted some seeds, waited forEVER for them to come up and was sorely disappointed when it came up smelling so musky and weird. I like it now but man was that a bummer!

As far as I know, Monarda fistulosa and M. didyma can be used interchangeably. There are other varieties commonly used for medicinal purposes as well!
