these are the best vids. everyone has seen the myriad of videos about known/great surf spots all across the world. those videos are cool because of the surfing. these Great Lakes videos are the best because they're unique and focus on a place no one really imagines surfing. kudos to ben for making another interesting vid.
I was in a terrible mood this morning, but watched this as I ate my breakfast and drank my coffee. Your super positive attitude and chill music have cheered me up and I feel better about the day. Thanks for the stoke, Ben. I love Brian's RU jacket. My alma mater.
I really like the close-up drone shots. Good to see Brian and his fresh angles. Shout out to Sam for being so cool, and Dieter for being so generous. The NUB Nation appreciates you. For The Dream.
Around 15:00 mark you were at Bradstreet Pier in Rocky River. Back around ‘91 my brother and I surfed a storm an early fall Nor’easter that blew all night and by daybreak the waves were 6-8’ above the end of the pier. According to the weather the lake was at 12-14’ We used the west side of the pier to help give us cover paddling out. When the Lake is really big it’s feels like being stuck on the inside the whole time… no matter how far you paddle out there is always a wave ready to break on you. It was for sure an epic day but completely exhausting too! It wasn’t the typical relaxing day in sun waiting for the next set to come in. Lake surfing very different obviously, if the wave looks good take it because the one behind it might look better but odd are it gets blown out by time you lined it up. Love your channel and maybe someday soon I’ll get back out in our Great Lake sadly it’s been more then 20 years since I last surfed it. You guys keep doing what your doing and continue the surfing dream here in the north coast!
As an Ohio local and knowing all these spots seeing you guys hit them was refreshing. Definitely was the swell of the year possibly the decade, heavy claims here, stoked to see you stoked on it
@@driventoaccount3276 it really depends on the spot. biggest i've ever seen was probably 12+ (hurricanes that occasionally come this way) but the best i've seen rideable is maybe 6ft. it really depends on the spot. The swell is always in the fall and winter if erie isn't frozen. A lot of the shore line isn't accessible and where it is there's no break at all. 90% of the breaks are shorebreak. the most popular spot is edgewater beach with a paddle surf and knee high very crumbly waves and the weather usually lines up enough for that maybe once a week. erie is crazy tho, it can go from nothing to firing instantly, as it's on average 50 ft deep
@@alexnodge8599 that is so interesting. I’m actually blown away there’s surf-able waves roughly once a week I thought it was only a big storm every once in a while. That’s also a very interesting note about the depth..as the swell of course needs deep water to build. Interesting to think that even on a smaller body of water compared to other lakes and seas, as long as it has the depth it will somewhat frequently produce rideable waves. Odd comment on my end but I wanted to respond how interesting that is!
Great video and welcome to The Land. That's my home harbor and I've been sailing out of there all my life. Glad you liked it and you proved to many that The Great Lakes are GREAT!
Hi Ben, I discovered your channel approximately 4 years ago, when I taught my son how to surf Presque Isle Pa. I just happened to be looking for other people who have experienced the surprising amazing surf that Pa has to offer. When I saw your video, I became an instant fan, and I have been following you ever since. Thank you for all of your hard work, and determination to succeed, which you did BIG TIME. Being that I am from Pittsburgh, Presque Isle is less than two hours from me. I am truly blessed and proud that I have this Freshwater Dream so close to home. Since you obviously are the King of Novelty waves, here is a tip for you: if you have howling southwest winds, go to Budy Beach at the tip of Presque Isle. Since it faces the North east, you get clean point break conditions. No joke, it can look like Malibu, well maybe that is a stretch, but you get my point, no pun intended, lol. Anyway, this is the best kept secret of Pa! Congratulations on your marriage and for your awesome blogs! You really have given me a reason to pick up my tablet everyday! Sincerely, Dan - Big fan ✌️
I dont think Ben read your post and being from California I won't be crowding up your secret wave but I do think you should try and send Ben another comment regarding your mini Malibu. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE SOME FOOTAGE, and I think it's really cool you are sharing it, dont worry very few people will ever make a road trip to surf in that part of the world which is a good thing for you my friend. Keep up the surfing with your family it pays off after every session I'm sure you know. Wish you good health and good waves buddy.
Great, feel good, video!! Fantastic editing, videography, music, etc. Thanks to the dude who let you guys on the lake from his house too. Made my day!!
That's what life's all about.. Friends, new surf spot, lake surfing 🌊 What else could u ask for🤙Bens the man always stoked no matter the situation such an awesome guy 💯
When I saw the words Ohio and Surf in the title I had to hit play 👍🌊👍 Nothing like the crystal brown waters of Lake Erie 😄 love the camera work and the music mix nice job 👍
A very entertaining vid short here Ben ! Looks like you sure had a great time in Erie...GREAT novelty waves ! And right ON Sam Skelton for being the experienced tour guide...! ...e..
I met Sam 2 years ago at Edgewater when I was just learning to surf! He's the first one who borrowed my 8' Wavestorm and showed me how its done! I'm stoked beyond belief that you scored such gnarly waves in my hometown! Hope to meet you one day too! Stay stoked bro🤙
I traveled a lot in the mid-1990s. One time I had to change planes in Cleveland and it was during a blizzard. While on final approach, we broke through the clouds and I could see a bunch of left hand point breaks that looked like they were firing. At least they looked that way from 2000 ft AGL at 300 mph in a blizzard.
I live here and don't even like going in the lake water anymore. I can go in the ocean, quick water rinse off with the beach shower head and continue on with my day. Lake Erie you have to go home, shower with antibacterial bodywash, and get the slime off😂.
Like so many people today I really don't have the time (or attention span) to watch something 30 minutes long. But I watched this whole episode and it's one of the bet 30 minutes I ever spent!!
that was just rad. It is so much more interesting to me watching surfing in places that you think don't have waves then to watch the 10,000 video of a break in hawaii.
Attack of the drone. The way it frazzled on the ground was like terminator going out, bummers on your fingers though dont go near those blades Ben. Great vid too as always
Welcome to Ohio..its so cool to see you guys in my town. I hope you had a wonderful time..as long as you were here you and Jordon should have visited the Christmas Story House and museum right im here in Cleveland, its pretty awesome..
One of the best waves i have ever seen on the lakes. What a great setup looked so fun even though I'm sure it was very cold. Although I heard no complaints. This is what's it's all about, the whole reason I watch this site. Reminds me of some old days back on the west coast of Florida waiting for cold fronts to come through while sitting on the beach and watching it go from flat to a foot to two feet and surfing through the onshores and having fun in crap waves and freezing too. Yes it gets cold in Florida.
Great video Ben. I was stoked to see this hoping to find a new spot close to my backyard. I watched intently trying to pickup clues as to where this magical point might be, it turns out it’s less than a mile from my house and someplace I had surfed back in the days of beaver tail wetsuits. It’s best after a big thaw or rain to stack things up a bit, just make sure you’re up to date on tetanus shots. Lastly, there are also some good river bumps to surf about a mile up river, my childhood playground.
kind of reminds me of the Michigan city break when it is REALLY REALLY big, you would jump off the jetty and paddle into the channel, it would break all the way to the sand to the west towards Mt Baldy area. long long walk back.
I like how he said “there was no one around “ we’ve been at it for decades. He just wants to be recognized. Sam is a kook plain and simple he’s obviously obsessed with Ben.
So you take off right next to the sharp jagged rocks and then you get a nice long ride but don't forget to jump off before the big gnarly log 😄 This is some classic Gravy action
I grew up in Ohio and when i use to go to Sandusky to go the Cedar Point Amusement park on Lake Erie ..i was always amazed at how big the waves were for a lake...!
Awesome to see you crush that novelty. I still am surprised to see how many undiscovered novelties there are in the United States. I was just on one three hours ago. Keep on crushing it legend!!
Nice Fellas I'm exited to be moving to the Upper Penninsula area I'm originally from Kahnehoe Hawaii, moved to Oregon surfed, boogie boarded, and fished the West Coast from 13 to 38, moved out to Oklahoma for Work been missing the Big Water the last 5 years, so scrolling Great Lakes content I found you
Summer of 97 I camped at a state park in upstate NY along the banks of Lake Erie. I was shocked when I saw some waves at the beach. We were on Phish tour so we didn’t really stay long. I have some beautiful pictures from there still.
