We wrote so much but only recorded one actual serious song together, though I am going to release some of the not shit ones in my solo project. As a jazz musician, Kids on the Slope felt like a gift to anybody who deeply invested themselves in the culture of the music. In my opinion, represented Jazz as an art better than *American films* like Whiplash, which is saying a lot. Shinichiro Wantanabe has such a deep appreciation for western music and art, as does the composer of the show, Yoko Kanno. It's truly a timeless and criminally underappreciated show, so I'm very glad you included it in this video.

Switched to bass just after and its been over 15 years playing in different bands, meeting different people. I think you will like Sound! Euphonium by Kyoto Animation. Instead of a band, it is a music anime about wind orchestra in high school. It got a great cast of characters in a good coming of age story. The music performance is breathtaking even for someone not into classical music like me. Remember to watch the movie "Liz and the Blue Bird " after the 2 seasons of TV series.

Hibike! Euphonium is god tier. As someone who holds their high school band experience very close to my heart the writing itself is pretty good and it's incredible how well they captured the atmosphere of it all. Every time I watch it actually feels like a time machine. And even if you can't relate to the band experience the production value of the show itself is just insane, I easily think it's KyoAni's magnum opus even if it isn't that mainstream.

Shinichiro Wanatabe (creator of samurai champloo) ties a specific style of music to all of his work. Space Dandy has a surfrock vibe and Carole and Tuesday is a love letter to modern pop. Carole and Tuesday at the very least belongs in this video for sure.

Nice video. You've even included 2 of my favorite Japanese movies, Linda Linda Linda and Swing Girls. I've watched and read almost everything here aside from the Sing Street movie which I'm inclined to watch now haha!
A few titles I liked that wasn't mentioned here are:
Detroit Metal City (Has an anime, live action movie and manga. A guy that wanted to be a pop star but reluctantly became a death metal singer)
Black Heaven (Space opera anime about a frustrated rocker guy)
Sora no Aosa o Shiru Hito yo (Anime movie. Bassist girl)
Taiyo no Uta (A movie about a singer girl with an illness where she can't be exposed to the sun. Starring Yui)
Brass Knuckle Boys (Japanese movie. A girl working for a record label discovered a punk band and wanted to sign them. She didn't know that they're old guys now and has long been inactive)
Fish Story (Japanese movie, though not really about bands or musicians at its core, it revolves around a mysterious punk song)
Almost Famous (A teen journalist covering an up and coming band)
Rock Star (Mark Wahlberg movie about a guy kicked out of his own cover band)
Yesterday (Cool premise. A guy transported to a parallel universe where The Beatles didn't exist so he got famous singing their songs)
Other animes: Nana(also have live action), Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, Hibike Emporium, Ao no Orchestra (currently ongoing), BanG Dream.

Since I haven't actually seen it mentioned anywhere here: the anime "Paripi Koumei"(or "Ya Boy Kongming!") absolutely hooked me with its 12 episode first season/single season. Regarding the hesitancy to not Watch a show because you know you're going to LOVE it, either from the premise/reviews alone, or the talk around it from the Anime community, I do that too!
my main reasoning is to just save it for a rainy day, but usually when an Anime is so popular; it tends to get harder and harder to avoid plot/visual spoilers online... so depends on the show I might watch it a month or two later after it finishes airing.

Almost immediately after watching this video I went on to search for On-Gaku. Thought it looked ridiculous yet fun... Boy, was I in for a surprise.
Its simplistic nature mixed with the idea of music full of feelings made it such a masterpiece.
Loved every single bit of it. I'm now going to recommend it to everyone, thanks.

21:12 I feel the exact same thing with both K-On and Bocchi. I like them as a slice of life anime but not as a music genre anime, though Bocchi does a bit better in exploring music and gigs. It might be because I'm into jazz but I feel like Blue Giant does it best in exploring music and the hardships of it especially since Jazz as a genre is not as popular as it once was in the 60's, and to me that shounen goal of being the best jazz musician is needed for Dai since its hard to accomplish something with jazz compared to rock/other genres of music mentioned in the other manga you mentioned. Though maybe Solanin might prove me wrong, I'll check it out.

I am actually glad I already know half the stuff on this list. I think the first I'll check out is Bocchi~
Great video, your passion for the subject is contagious as always. (:
Now excuse me, this gave me motivation to continue writing these half-finished lyrics I started a week ago.

After watching Bocchi the Rock and reading Hibike! Euphonium's Novel, I got this drive to go through japanese media about music and writing some thoughts about the way music is portrayed and how it's communicated in language (going through them in japanese), so I really felt represented by your video because it shared a lot of my own thoughts, specially on the halfway point of the frustration with how much media is classified under the "music" category in anime sites when it's a show that happens to have music in it (was a surprise to find out that Nana fell into that category for me when i heard for years about it being one of the best music anime ever)

In high school I was going through the whole dream of becoming a musician but was too afraid of actually trying and instead lived that out vicariously through my friends who could actually play music, and that's about when I picked up Beck: MCS because the main character had a well drawn Les Paul on the cover of volume 1. The art does have some weird quirks as you highlighted, but those big action shots are pretty amazing. Very rewarding series to stick all the way through. I'm definitely gonna check out Kids on the Slope and Bocchi the Rock, I had always considered K-on but something kept me away. Excellent video man!

Bro I am hyped af to see all of these. I knew bocchi was about music, but I never knew how well it spoke about the reality of playing music for a career. Or like the other ones, never heard of the other ones and those seem sick.
Also I gotta recommend Gravitation. It's a BL manga with comedic and musical aspects to it, but it's a light hearted version of the reality of making it in music. It's a fun read, I love it.

Man I feel you on dragging your feet watching Bocchi. I had seen a couple clips from the show on TikTok and was like “This has the possibility to become one of the best things I ever watched”. Then it took me weeks to finally hype myself up enough to sit down and watch it. I connected with Bocchi the Rock even more than I thought I would. Bocchi easily became top 5 all time for me and I haven’t even started reading the Manga yet. Not just Bocchi though, your coverage of all these series is much appreciated and you gave me stuff I definitely want to check out. Thanks for the video

Thank you for this video! I have a fictional band (1st Assault) and a fictional record label, POM Records and I always loved the creativity not just around music but the scene & people as well. I would read band stories, biographies, see the behind-the-scenes of videos, studio videos, etc. I've been kind of a shut-in most of my life, so this has been an outlet and to hear and watch these anime that flesh out some of that experience is very relaxing and entertaining and gives me ideas as well.

I've seen and read quite a few of these, like Beck and Ongaku: Our Sound, Kids on the Slope, and Linda Linda Linda. Great how you've put them all together like this. And definitely some more to check out! So nice you included Samurai Champloo, which you made me think of while talking about Inu-Oh. SC is one of my favorite anime, not least because of the music. Yes the hip hop, I mean... Nujabes !!... But what really resonated with me was that song by Asazaki Ikue during Mugen's story. Beautiful.
Thanks for a great video !!!
Afterthought: I’d add Kono Oto Tomare!, just because the koto is an amazing instrument. The manga really does a good job conveying music in drawings. The anime art is a little simpler, but the music is fantastic.
And I’d maybe add Given. It’s more about the personal stories of the band members, but the songs are great.
