I work and live in the Silicon Valley - been here for 10 years. After moving here I immediately noticed that, for being allegedly the home to the smartest people in the world, on average folks (and I work in the it industry) were quite dumb. They can be very smart in one specific task, but they surely lack skills/intelligence in many other areas of social living - but they get aggrandized because they make apps/devices. The valley is a strange mix of Ayn Rand fans and milquetoast liberalism. They bought into their own bullshit and think they are the ones that will “save” the world. I know a high ranking VC guy that has a sniper turret on his property and hires a company that tries to kidnap him, and he has to try to not get kidnapped.
I figure most people in the tech world are there just to scrape out a living and don't have delusions that they're saving the world, but they have to silently endure the psychosis of their bosses.
I am a scientist and the general attitude among scientists about engineers and software engineers in particular is that they are dumb as shit and full of themselves, a combination of traits that is never not amusing. Literally anybody thats interested in doing so can learn to code and make an app. Knowing how to put together libraries written by smarter people doesnt make you a genius.
On a serious note, going back to Milton Friedman, Reagan, Ayn Rand and the John Birch Society is that any kind of public activity can't work and can't be good. That is why they have done 70 years of attacks on public schools and universities. Also, public water system is seen as something that should be privatized and as future money source for investment groups.
This is proof that anybody who says that capitalism is fair because it rewards smart people for being smart is either a grifter or has been grifted. There are so many rich people that are just complete dullards.
In the global climate crises we will eat the water orb ghouls like we eat chicken now. It will just simply be the norm. Their screams will be as roosters calling out the coming of the morning.
