March 22 1944, Italy. 15 American soldiers two officers and 13 enlisted men. They landed about 60 miles north of a la Spezia and about 250 miles behind German lines they were members of the company from special reconnaissance Battalion 2677 a covert operations group of the office of
strategic services the objective of their mission operation Ginny was to destroy a tunnel on the vital Railway line between LA Spezia and Genoa a line that the Germans were using to supply forces fighting on the casino and anzio France each of these Americans was of Italian descent and they were chosen for the mission because most of them spoke Italian.
They all wore their standard U.S army field uniforms and did not attempt to conceal their identities
they were on the ground for about a day and a half before a patrol of Italian partisans and German soldiers discovered their identity. A brief firefight ensued and the outnumbered Americans surrendered they were taken to La Spezia and confined near the headquarters of the German Army's 135th Fortress Brigade the unit commanded by Colonel Kurt Elmers was subordinate to General Anton dossler's 75th Corps.
The captured Americans were interrogated by German military intelligence first lieutenant Vincent Russo was tricked into revealing the details of the operation after his interrogators told him that one of his men had already divulged everything in truth this hadn't happened as soon as they obtained the information they wanted Alma's reported the capture of the American to Ohio headquarters on the following day March 25th the Brigade received a telegram that read the captured Americans will be executed immediately signed by General dosler Colonel almer's questioned Osler asking him to reconsider his order or at least suspend the execution.
