Pete Rock, 9th Wonder, Jay Dilla, Kanye West, Nujabes, DJ Premier, Flying Lotus, Pharrell, Madlib, Tokimonsta, and Large Pro all inspired me to make music.
@Delete_Forever_ wow that's wild. I forget what the first YT vid I ever watched but I remembee watching this and being awestruck and inspifed by how good pete rock is
hilarious comment - it's got quantize silly - it's extremely simple to chop any beat and have it smoothed out into the rhythm you set. Maybe you don't really have any experience with it after all.. or ability to play a real instrument pre-filter-sample-loop-chop-sequence
I was riding down melrose on my bike in LA and I saw Pete this was in late 90s I jumped off the bike and the bike crashed into traffic lol I ran up to Pete star struck and said... u peterock man , he said yea that’s me son lol...I was soo excited....he gave me an autograph and I bounced...he’s one of the greatest producers that done it and he was and is a great inspiration to me to this day... peace
Back when this was uploaded there wasn't a lot of videos of producers making beats so this video really cleared up a lot of the mystery of how an MPC, or sampler in general, worked. I remember really wanting to see him work with an SP-1200 (which happened to be uploaded a few years later luckily)
I get so pumped for making beats after watching videos like these, then i jump onto ableton and realise how good producers like pete rock are.. they make it look effortless!
Pete really makes me smile with his genuine character and whole being, like i see him geek out on sumthin and I jus want him to be sum 1 i see everyday and can talk about music with!

Desiree Holgersson Nah. you don't have to tell me that. He's one of my faves too. I always felt like Pete Rock and Premiere had the most hypnotic beats but Dilla, No I.D., QD3 and Hi-Tek are some other really great producers that I don't think ever got their due.
PR is probably my all time favorite producer right now. There are many, many amazing hip hop producers out there for sure, but he just has the best combination of jazz, funk and bass. The Main Ingredient is one of the most slept on album of the 90's. Never. Gets. Old.
Finally got the Vicki Sue Robinson joint "Hope Your Feelings Are Like Mine" that he sampled. Wished he would have used it in a record.......I would have loved that record too just because of the beat.
JUST found the OG while I was music diving. He did this so smooth and raw. I was listening to the OG thinking it would make a good sample and then was like OH SHIT 😂

Damn! I've watched this video and other beatmakin' videos on TH-cam a few times now... and what comes to mind is how all the great hip-hop producers (DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Marley Marl, 9th Wonder, Kev Brown, etc. etc.) just make beatmakin' look so easy. If you look at what Rock's doing it might look like nothing, but really it's a hard task to build up a sample-based beat, and make all the elements of the song work. Respect and props to all the legendary hip-hop producers from me! :-)
YOOOOO this came on a DVD with a magazine I remember getting this in the mail when I was in High School (I think?) and wow this brings back memories!!!
After a long time of waiting to find out the beat @ 4:14 a friend played it when i was over his house. I along with many others was yearning to hear the entire instrumental because the little taste of it in this video just isnt enough. To all you Poets, Producers, hip hop heads, and even lay men to the art that have yet to find it.....i give you with great pleasure, Pete's Piano Instrumental!!! Just copy and paste this and enjoy. Pete Rock - Piano Instrumental ( Rare & Unreleased )
It looks easy cause they're just pressing buttons. But this is actually a craft. knowing how and what to do and being able to execute it is skill. not easy even though it may appear that way. That's why they're so good, they make it look simple and easy enough for anyone to do.
One of the greatest producers in history im tellin ya 💯🎹 he too talented wit da MPC, made memories wit da samplin and music releases. I like how old dis video was uploaded too
People skilled in an art always make it look easy. But behind that skill are thousands of hours of practice and work.
You're right 100%... I start with beatmaking 4 months ago and... OMG... So hard... But sooooooooooo nice when you do well :-D
Amen to that! If it was easy, everybody would do it! "People are rewarded in public for what they've practiced in years" - Tony Robbins! :) Bless

10 years later and you are absolutely correct.

That last flip is crazy. Pete and Jay Dee could’ve produced acts like Sade etc solely with the MPC and make it sound like a band.
