Just installed this on my 2019 Rabbit GTI and everything went as expected thanks to the great video. I feel a good difference with the shifts. Thanks and keep making great videos like that.
Hey great video Paul. This was my first mod to my 2006 Mkv GTI. The eu;ro oem short shifter tightened it up just right for me. I bought my GTI new and just started fixing it up at 125,000 miles. Your videos along with the Humble Mechanic have been a great help in saving me money on parts and labor, and learning more about my car in the process. Thanks! Kris
It showed up today, and its installed today, love that…I used an exhaust hanger remover plier thing, popped right off with gentle pressure increase…noticeable throw reduction, i am satisfied
Thank you for the video, I installed one for my 2008 GLI and everything went in and out pretty easy. The side to side arm featured a plastic clip to depress the arm back, but took some wiggling to snap back onto the new shifter. The front to back arm was straight forward and i just grabbed as far forward as I could on the arm. I just hand tightened the shifter bolt, then another 1/8 turn but nothing more. The shifts don't feel shorter but the stick shift is crisper with a heavier feel which cleans up the factory play. I put silicone grease on the ends that touch the side to side arm. I didnt have to adjust the shifter levers or after install.
Just an FYI for anyone installing this shifter - I installed this exact unit in my 2017 GTI. I followed this video step-by-step and the install was a breeze. Took all of 30 minutes being careful and taking my time. However, afterwards my GTI would not shift correctly. Reverse, 1st, 3rd and 5th were all jacked up snd wouldn't go into gear easily at all. 2nd, 4th and 6th were fine though. A few minutes and a google search later I found this video: th-cam.com/video/sheTKD03hmo/w-d-xo.html and it saved my butt. Bottom line is that the new shifter has to be aligned. The video I mentioned is for an older model VW, but is still relevant to the MKVII as the mechanics are very similar. Once I found the video it only took me a few minutes to make the shifter right and it shifts awesome. Cheers!
Great install video. This was such a simple, inexpensive upgrade to my MK7, but holy shit what a difference! The throw is such a vast improvement over stock. Thanks!
I know this is a super old post, I’m going to attempt an install. When I did this on my TT with a different brand a few years back I had to reset the cable linkage or “zero” it. Is this necessary?
Is there a reason you haven't carried out a shifter alignment? Locking out the gearbox and centring the gearstick prior to releasing the cable collars?
Two questions: 1. Do you need to keep the end link that comes attached to the Audi shift lever? I would prefer to keep the stock link, if possible. 2. Do you need to adjust the shifter assembly after this install? I know that the Dieselgeek short shift kit requires adjustment after install. Thanks Paul!
Help! I left the shifter in 1st during the install and now I can’t find 1st gear. Reverse is fine. Research shows I need to adjust the shift cables. Is that all I need?
I'm having the worst time getting the stock lever off the spline, 2012 GLI. Any tips? Been working at it for about 3 hours now and it does not want to be removed!
Is the MK7 stock shifter shorter than the MK5/6? Reason I ask is because on the MK5/6 this "S3" short shifter would claim to be 20% shorter. But on the MK7 it says its 10-15% shorter. I've always wondered if the MK7 actually had a shorter shifter than the MK5/6. I came from a MK5 and now have a MK7 GTI and it certainly feels much better but I don't remember how long the throws were. Keep doing these DIY videos. These are great!
+Gary Lee Tough to say for sure. They are likely similar. We try to be conservative to ensure that no one feels like the info they get from us is over embellished. Hope this makes sense.
i have a 2017 golf. Not a gti. i would like to know if this would work on this. Im sure there shouldnt be a problem, just want to make sure... ( its a 5 speed)
I installed the short shifter and the solid shifter bushings in my 2015 gti, now shifting into gears is very difficult, specially into 1st gear, I literally have to force it and it's very grindy while going into gears. I can't shift into 1st if the car is rolling slowly... any idea on how to fix the issue? does the shifter linkage needs adjustment? if yes how to?
+Ismael Mahamat Sounds like you will need to adjust you shifter. Take a look at this video it would be similar to this th-cam.com/video/pUtZuLyr_sc/w-d-xo.html
hey paul, great video, would this procedure be similar when working on a an 2006 audi a3, with the tfsi 2.0t engine? if anything ive had a clearer understanding on how to get started. thanks and once again great work.
Greetings! I own a1.8 tsi with 6speed manual gearbox seat leon. i wish to shorten the distance with an oem vw short shifter.. wich is the part number that should i look for?
Paul why didn't you guys lock the shifter/tranny into service mode? Seems that part is vital to guarantee that there are no issues after the replacement? Additionally, I didn't see you guys mention anything about the endlinks and how its beneficial to replace the rubber/plastic items with metal ones. You should consider selling it as a kit and show a video how to do both. I plan on doing so here shortly and I'll show how both are done on a MK7 Golf R. Great video's as usual.
+Schwabo For this installing locking the shifter isn't really needed. We talked more about it on the metal cable bracket DIY. In regards to the end links we are working on them but dont have anything at this time.
+Deutsche Auto Parts People are generally not aware that they can bring their shifter out of alignment, you're a grade much higher than us when it comes to installs. The more foolproof the better IMHO. Keep up the great work!
Forgive me on a newb question, but how do you lock the shifter/tranny into service mode? Do you really risk making the shifter out of alignment with just changing this shifter bracket? I don't think I've seen it being a concern with all the other VW shifter DIY vids. Thx Schwabo.
Hey Paul ! I know you are a busy guy, any chance you found the part number I need to replace the stud i over tightened...and snapped off? I have been pretty lucky thus far, the short sifter bracket has not moved at all. I know I need to take care of it before some type of incident occurs. My car is a Mk7 golf R. Thank you in advance!
i have a question i have a 2015 MK7 GTI with 18k and I'm getting clutch chatter when my car is in idle as soon as i press the clutch slightly the chatter goes away, and I'm always having to rev high in order to get the car moving from first so it doesn't stall on me, I'm not so sure if this is the clutch itself that's causing this because its worn out or is this a factory problem and if so can i adjust the clutch pedal or do something to make it go away, i really love this car and don't want to have to make repairs so soon i just bought it this weekend. thanks ahead of time.
under normal driving condition (i am from Canada, and it gets pretty cold here at least 6 months of the year), how often (miles or years) should i change the coolant in my 2011 Tiguan? thanks.
Deutsche Auto Parts i can't find it anywhere, maybe because Canadian version of the OM is different... my dealer wants me to change the fluid every 4 years, but i only have 25k miles right now...
#dap I found this very helpful post for mk5,The original poster did the same thing. www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133705 .Post number 16 references a parts diagram but has no part numbers listed. Original poster comments later install was very simple. I just need a part number for a mk7 golf R 2016.
I recently installed a Forged short shifter on my MK6 GTI. I noticed that my shifts felt significantly stiffer. Is this normal when making this type of modification?
GTorres0709 yes you're reducing the amount of leverage you have so it'll require more force to shift. If it bothers you, you can compensate for it with a heavier or taller shift knob
+kyle greenley Yes this would be pretty much the same on the MK5 and the same part applies to 6 speed MK5 and MK6 Models. You can find it here deutscheautoparts.com/oem-euro-short-shifter-8j0711046e.html
Will this part keep my warranty because it's an OEM VW part? Or not really... Will this part be better than any of the aftermarket ones like APR, CTS or Neuspeed?
+Alexis Gueits No it will not be under warranty. While this is an OEM part it wasn't intended for the vehicle which means that no factory warranty would cover it.
Is there an easier way to remove the stock shifter? i've tried prying it and using the method in the video, but man is that thing in there! would WD40 be safe to use?
If you use a long attachment on your ratchet, put it on the bolt with the 13mm bit and tap the top of the extension with a hammer. Alternatively you could just hit the top of the 13mm if you don't the extension but be careful with it.
Just installed this on my 2019 Rabbit GTI and everything went as expected thanks to the great video. I feel a good difference with the shifts. Thanks and keep making great videos like that.

Thanks so much. This is by far the best short shifter install video i've found on youtube.
Thank you for the video, I installed one for my 2008 GLI and everything went in and out pretty easy. Thanks for the help guys, fitted a short shifter on my CR184 Seat Leon MK3 2013 plate and the same process was followed!
Just about to do this on my 2009 Skoda Octavia vRS TSI. Great video and thanks for the heads up on the 25nm on the bolt :)
Great install video. This was such a simple, inexpensive upgrade to my MK7, but holy shit what a difference! The throw is such a vast improvement over stock. Thanks!
hi, after installing it do I need to adjust the shift cables??? thanks!!!

Could you use Super Lube 21030 Synthetic Grease (NLGI 2) as the grease of choice demonstrated at 3:52?
Hello, a question with, how much torque do you tighten the nut? regards
can you provide some inside shifting footage of before and after installing this piece? thnx
+Nick Its roughly a 15% reduction in throw while still keeping a pretty stock feel (not too notchy)
Does the mk7 Golf R have a shorter throw than the GTI? If so how much shorter is it than the USA stock shifting throw on the R?
So what grease did you use?
Help! I left the shifter in 1st during the install and now I can’t find 1st gear. Reverse is fine. Research shows I need to adjust the shift cables. Is that all I need?

What short shifter should i buy for a vw golf 1.4tsi mk7???
Any idea if this fits a mk7 GLI? 2019
Can i use this on a Golf 1.4 tsi mk7??
Is this for only gti? Does the R have the same shifter from the factory?

+Deutsche Auto Parts is it safe to drive the car just as is for a couple days? or will I break something
Ismael Mahamat You wont want to be grinding gears long term this could do some damage.
Do you need to fix the transmition leaver to one position before this change or can you leave it free in neutral?
+Maros2411 It shouldn't matter but neutral is perfect.
Does the car have to be in neutral or can it be in 1st gear? Im parked up a slope so it’s currently in 1st
hey paul, great video, would this procedure be similar when working on a an 2006 audi a3, with the tfsi 2.0t engine? if anything ive had a clearer understanding on how to get started. thanks and once again great work.
+Arjay Canon yes would be similar
Hey bro did you end up installing that short shifter because I also have an a3 an was wondering how it went
Do you have to replace the stock shift end links or can you keep them on with the new short shifter ?
Greetings! I own a1.8 tsi with 6speed manual gearbox seat leon. i wish to shorten the distance with an oem vw short shifter.. wich is the part number that should i look for?
My old shift linkage literally wont fucning come off
It's avalible for golf R and Seat leon cupra?
EnerVatox yes, same gearbox, same shifter
Any effect on warranty with this swap?

You're right, you don't have to do it if the car is in neutral, as Paul indicated.
Seems that shortening the gear lever inside the car would net a better effect.
hello , you know how to remove the tops of the front tweeters and a GTI mk7 know if you have a video tutorial , thanks for your videos
+ulises0885 Im sorry we dont. The A pillar trim will need to come off.

Is there any negative effect on the transmission after installing the short shifter? Could the short shifter damage the transmission over time?
+anygivingsunday No nothing to worry about in terms of damage.

25 nm is about 18 ft lbs, right?
Yes, 18.4 ft lbs exactly. I had to look at up during my install this weekend.
i have a question. i just replaced my stock shifter with apr short shifter. great. but i have to rev to 3000 rpm to get to 1st. is that normal?
No, thats not normal. You should probably adjust your shift cables.
So Paul...what happens when you break that stud off??? Yeahhhhh I did it. Please help #DAP , what parts do I need? Is this a possible Diy?

No it does not. This would work on an R as well.
