It never made it to Broadway@@Rite1010. but he WAS Quasimodo in both California and NJ at Papermill Playhouse. Greatest production I've ever seen there. I WISH it would have moved to Broadway, but I guess Michael going on to be nominated for a Tony as a director the following season (2016) is as good a consolation as any. Super deserving dude.
Apparently the reason was that because the show had such a huge cast because of the chorus equity wouldn’t pay for the actors. So instead of the writers having less members they decided that it was more important for the show to have the large cats for the story. That’s why we don’t have so many huge ensembles in musicals anymore like 42nd street because actors are now finally getting paid living wages professionally. So it was more of an artistic choice to keep the shows integrity. Not good or bad just a choice.
@@FlowersInHisHair yes your right. I’m not sure of all the details really there’s not much out there (no pun intended). But regardless I believe the story holds true perhaps it wasn’t equity per se but some entity wasn’t willing to pay all of those people so the creatives didn’t put it on Broadway. Thanks for the comment!
Please don't toy with my emotions!!! I've wanted Hunchback to be on Broadway since I listened to the studio cast recording. Michael Arden is a true gift!!! Full body chills!
Chills MULTIPLE TIMES during this performance. Oh my god. He's not singing this at a piano. He's not even singing this in a theater onstage in a costume in front of an audience. He is THERE. IN Notre Dame. Watching the world passing by him in naïve and joyful envy. He IS Quasimodo. BRAVO, MICHAEL!!!!! You do INCREDIBLE justice to one of my favorite Disney songs!!!!

THIS DESERVES ALL AWARDS WHİCH ARE OUT THERE !!! The only musical I wanted to visit in my life, Im so sad I missed it, Disney has to make a live action remake of hunchback of notre dame with the same cast from the musical, they were phenomenal
Michael always ACTS through song - it is one thing to sing something beautifully, but quite another to have us feel we are seeing the character before us. Stunning and heartbreaking x
Wow, that’s delivery with emotion! What a golden voice he has. It’s not just hitting all the right notes, but the feeling he creates with his voice is incredible.
this is a masterclass in performance. michael is an incredible director, no doubt, with a fresh, almost unparalleled vision but what he brings to the stage as a performer, an actor and singer - my god. it is just divine.
The official reason for Disney not bringing the show to Broadway, sad though as it is, is namely because they couldn't pay the Union enough to include the choir. In short, Alan Menken said the only way he could get it onto Broadway was if he omitted the choir. I think we can all agree that would mean losing apretty essential part of the score.
@@jacobbelow4136 Honestly though, I feel like they could totally do it without the choir as long as they have a strong cast with 20 or so ensemble actors that have powerful choral voices. That would give them a total of around 30 singers total, which is probably enough to pull off the huge choral sound it needs. I've been in the choir for this show for one production, and I'd say it's totally doable without an official choir as long as they have a cast of around 30. That would still be fairly expensive for a Broadway show, but not as bad as having to pay both a choir and a cast (for a total of around 50-60 voices).
@@jacobbelow4136 that's such BS on part of Disney. They have produced shows much larger and more expensive than Hunchback. They can afford to do the show with or without a choir. Besides, they could easily make that money back. So...wanna try again Disney?
@@jacobbelow4136 Schumacher has said in interviews that the reason Hunchback will never make it to Broadway under the Disney banner is because it's not exactly a family-friendly show in this incarnation. The show is too dark for the image that they're trying to project.

His voice is just incredible, perhaps even my favorite voice of any Broadway performer. It's gorgeous, he fills it with character and has amazing breath support. I hope hunchback comes to broadway at some point and he could reprise Quasimodo or even direct the show.
I hope he takes this to Broadway because I will book my ticket ASAP. Or... if not that... the role of Quasimodo in the recently announced Hunchback of Notre Dame live adaption film.

What's even cooler about this performance is in the musical he paid tribute to the novel by making Quasimodo speak with a strangled slur because in the novel he is deaf.
Oh, I sooo wish Michael Arden would perform again, not just direct. He changed the game with "Hunchback". I was lucky to see a decent regional production of this several years ago. Disney really missed out on an opportunity to present an unrequited love story as important as Romeo and Juliet.

Safe behind these windows and these parapets of stone
Gazing at the people down below me
All my life I watch them as I hide up here alone
Hungry for the histories they show me
All my life I memorize their faces
Knowing them as they will never know me
All my life I wonder how it feels to pass a day
Not above them
But part of them
And out there
Living in the sun
Give me one day out there
All I ask is one
To hold forever
Out there
Where they all live unaware
What I'd give
What I'd dare
Just to live one day out there
Out there among the millers and the weavers and their wives
Through the roofs and gables I can see them
Ev'ry day they shout and scold and go about their lives
Heedless of the gift it is to be them
If I were in their skin
I'd treasure ev'ry instant
Out there
Strolling by the Seine
Taste a morning out there
Like ordinary men
Who freely walk about there
Just one day and then
I swear I'll be content
With my share
Won't resent
Won't despair
Old and bent
I won't care
I'll have spent
One day
Out there
