I've loved Bonnie Raitt for over a half a century and nothing could make me happier than this wonderful singer/songwriter/musician/activist win the Grammy for Song of the Year as she richly deserves all the acclaim.
Thank you, Thank you, my gentle men. You've done something very important. Your insights are fantastic, and you have to be awake, aware, and sensitive enough to know the greatest grief imaginable, And Bonnie handles this incredibly difficult topic like the healing goddess that she is. When her voice breaks on "I laid my heart upon his chest, I was with my son again" I broke down, And I don't break down easily. What a new frontier she's discovering. So many organ recipients have commented on this song. The comments are heartbreaking and wonderful at the same time. That's art. (Idiocracy is one of the best movies ever).
I love your reaction to this powerful and beautiful song. Bonnie is terrific. Have seen her many times in concert. Get to see her again in May. She said in an interview that she was watching the news and saw a story about a woman who lost her son and donated his organs for donations. A man got her son's heart. Bonnie said it was such a powerful story that she had to write a song about it! I am so glad she won. So well deserved!!!!!
Bonnie has such incredible control over her voice. She is an underrated master singer. When she sings it pierces your soul and one of the only people who can make me cry when I hear her sing. ❤ Im glad they decided to shake it up and give props to a real artist and a real singer.
Like John Prine....Like Bob Dylan...Bonnie's delivery is more about the words, the story, than it is about sounding pretty......Perfect.....Well deserved....May she keep sharing her stories with us for many years.
I have seen her twice. Her shows are great. Just music, no flashing lights, no dancers. Just good, understandable music. The other great song on this album is "Down the Hall".
I first heard Bonnie on a Little Feet album, I’ve heard her with Emmy Loe, Dolly, Ronstadat, and many others so you know my age. I am also a multi instrument musician and played in many bands, my 13 year old son was shot and killed in June of 94 this has depth in every way and brings tears flowing every time I hear it. I pray for peace and grace ! She certainly more than deserves the award they got it right and hopefully it’s a long lasting trend !!
Check out Samara Joy, the 23 year old jazz singer who won Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album. Listen to her Grammy pre-show performance of 'Can't Get Out Of This Mood' and her music video for 'Guess Who I Saw Today'. She deserved those Grammy wins.
I clicked on this because of Bonnie. Would have been nice if you had mentioned the other two Grammys she won that night. Thanks for the discussion. Have you ever done a show on John Prine??
We mention John a lot in many of our videos, but not a dedicated episode, no. We also have a radio show in Austin that we play John a lot. But no, not a dedicated TH-cam episode, no. I think we mention him in this episode. Thank you for the comment.
Bonnie laid down a layered spiritual message. “Jesus…He hasn’t found me yet.” The resolution comes “Somehow grace has found me and I had to let him in.” That gets overlooked intentionally because people will object. That’s ok Bonnie gave it in a dosage that slips past the censors. She writes a song about someone who laments they’ve been godforsaken and deftly shows the mystery of his grace. It’s no doctrinaire proclamation rather a confessional thanksgiving. Just the way God does it in the real world.
Yah Grammys are pointless. Bonnie Rait certainly has had a great career, but SoTY this year was not something I personally think should have gone to her.
It's about song writing, not popularity. Bonnie Raitt deserved this award more than anyone. The song is about loss and organ donation. How can the others even come close?

Great show thanks !
Thank you. Hope you come on back.
I saw Tom Waits open for her in Boston in the 1970s
Very cool. Weird to think of Tom Waits as an opening act.

As for the other 2 grammys. This episode is about her winning that particular category.

FYI, Come to My Window is a Melissa Etheridge song. ✌🏼
