  • Here's a review of a French World War II drama about resistance during the German occupation. Please excuse any mispronunciation: my French is always questionable!

I’ve only seen the 2004 version, I thought it was lovely. Left me wanting a sequel!

'Le Silence de la Mer' is one of the greatest directorial debuts. Melville is a great director--especially when he's dealing with the occupation of France by the Nazis. His film 'Army of Shadows' is quite possibly the greatest film set in WW2, and 'Leon Morin, Pretre' is such a beautiful and strange story. An amazingly gifted director.

Just borrowed it from the library after seeing your review and snippets of the more recent film! I actually thought I was about to see the 2004 version but ,as you say, this is a remarkable film, and beautifully done. I then watched the rather fuzzy 2004 film, enjoyed it too. But I think the earlier film is superior. Thank you for inspiring me to watch both!

I'm glad you enjoyed them! They're rather different interpretations, but both powerful in their own way.

Je ris au sujet des sous-titres .... You remark about the subtiles made me laugh. Sorry but think how hard it is for us without any subtitles here ... Well, you know you good reviews not only improve my knowledge of cinema (even the Franc ones) , but also my English as well. SO ... grand merci !

Oh, I know, any complaints about having to read subtitles must seem so annoying. Thanks for putting up with all my questionable attempts to say French words and names properly!

Hopefully there may be another few parts that may bring them together. The energy between them gone, and LOVE brings happiness......as we are trying to live within our everyday life..... God bless u all...Thank God we do not have to live in those days of war...

Nelson Nelson Nelson III You can find this movie, along with some great special features, as a Criterion Collection disc or on the FilmStruck streaming service online.

It’s a good film, and the story of how Jean-Pierre Melville made it by purchasing scraps of leftover film stock and saving up just enough money to do one day of shooting at a time, is as interesting as the film itself. Check out the special features on the Criterion disc or at the FilmStruck online service where they have the complete contents of the Criterion DVD (it will go away eventually.)

I like war movies. If I can find The Silence of the Sea somewhere, I wouldn’t mind seeing it. I’d like see the ‘49 version first if it’s available somewhere. You mention in a lot of videos that you and your mom watch a lot of movies on TV. Where do you guys find them? Are they on regular TV, or some old movie channel, or somewhere else? I know before my grandma died she used to watch old movies all the time on the Turner Classic Movies channel. I unfortunately didn’t appreciate old movies at that time, so I didn’t take the opportunity to watch them with someone who did. She would’ve loved it if I had taken the time to watch them with her and, in hindsight, I wish I had.

Well, we don't watch movies on tv much these days, but we used to watch Turner Classic Movies all the time and taped a lot of films off there. Same with the Fox Movie Channel, which often played old movies during the daytime. Now we mostly stream movies on Prime, TH-cam, or the TCM app, and I rent DVDs and Blu-rays from the library when I can. I know what you mean about wishing you'd taken advantage of an opportunity to share something with grandparents before they were gone. I'm sure your grandma would be pleased to know you've developed an interest in old movies later in life. Though you didn't choose to watch them with her at the time, when you watch them now they can still be a reminder of her and the good times you shared.

This sounds like an intriguing and complex story, which makes me want to find it and watch it NOW. I know I'm going to want to see the 2004 version as well, so maybe I'll watch that one first so as not to be disappointed that it's not like the original. :P (Because that will happen.)

And that was my first comment on youtube ever. :O I don't know why I've never commented before. Probably b/c the idea of conversing with complete strangers about something I only marginally care about has never appealed to me. But now it's different, because we're not strangers and I actually care! lol Thanks for the review!

Congratulations on your first comment! I'm terrible at leaving comments, even though I love receiving them, so I'd say this is a moment worth celebrating. I hope you enjoy the movies in whichever order you see them, and I like forward to hearing what you think!

Solid cinematography for its time but when compared to the books effect, the movie is ok at best.
