Been watching Vloggers for 6months as getting ready to retire. This is clearly the best information laid out well and without any drama. Well done, one new sub.
Keith - thats great to hear, thanks for the kind words. If cost of living are the type of videos you like you're in luck, we try and do one anywhere we stay for a long time. Here is the playlist with a few other countries: th-cam.com/video/z6JWjFljmZw/w-d-xo.html
Great Vidz. CM is 1 of my Top venue to settle down for retirement Modern city yet rustic, affordable housing, Fast Internet, chepa transportation and best of all food is delicious Ppl in CM so friendly
Love chiang mai ! next time I go I would prefer to find an apartment with a oven however as I only had a microwave and hob while they got me by re heating leftovers or cooking noodles and easy things an oven wouldn't go a miss for cooking a little cheaper at home :) that said chiang mai is cheap enough food wise to not worry too much :)
Thanks, man. Really great. I think we have to pay more for coffee in San Francisco than the monthly living budget in CM. My GF just sold her house in Bali (Ubud), or I'd ask if you guys need a place to stay! Questions: 1. did you find a local community to hang out with? 2. What kind of apartment/house (no car) could you get for $2000/mo? Cheers.
Thanks! There's plenty of events and groups you can join in CM to meet other expats, travellers or nomads. $2,000 goes a LOOOONG way in CM. We paid $700 in high season and everyone said we were crazy, but we love the area more than anything. Live further away and you could get a whole house for that budget th-cam.com/video/X-pHhyOun1U/w-d-xo.html
Thats amazing news, there is so much value in there we hope it opens your eyes to the possibilities and helps you achieve your goals! Thanks for following along with us
Great info, thanks! I'm in CM now and not finding it very walkable. Most streets have limited or no sidewalks and you're constantly having to dodge vehicles. I'm using Grab a lot, sounds like you guys just hung around Nimman mostly. Also, prices have definitely gone up since you made this video, CM still a bargain but apartments like that are probably more like $900-1000 USD. Cheers.
Yeah it's not the most walkable city on the soi's etc. We like Nimman but have explored a lot of teh city on tours, on foot or our scooter. Shame to hear prices have gone up so much now.
would love an add-on for your next cost of living videos: What costs would you limit? What costs are particularly high in that area? And alternatively, what costs you can/might consider splurging on. Tnx
Chiang Mai for sure, super easy, better food, easy groceries, dont need a scooter, less tourists, more relaxed, less hustle.... but the beaches in the PH are amazing!
Please excuse my ignorance but what does travel experience include and should I look for when shopping for one? Also thanks for your channel. You're doing a great job.
Daneger and Stacey Damn! Sorry yes. Guess I should proof read first before sending. Also you mention a little about the cost of protein powders, are those more expensive or about the same.
Travel insurance is vital, every company out there says they can do it, but most of them have ridiculous premiums, terrible support, unrealistic claims, or just dont cover you for the things you need. HIGHLY recommend you go with these guys, claimed twice and they were great: www.danegerandstacey.com/travelinsurance Buying powders in Thailand is pricey, Vietnam was super cheap though for good stuff. Best to buy some before you leave: www.geni.us/ourprotein
is these prices in usa $ or aus $ , maybe better if you give prices in thai baht for people to convert themselves to get a better idea of cost, good video and info, thanks.
Prices are in USD. Used to always do them in Baht and people were annoyed, USD most people know the rough rate to exchange to their own currency :) Thanks for watching!
You probably could, but you would be skimping by pretty hard - thats mega boot strapping and definitely not a life of luxury and nice things or experiences.
I have never been to Thailand but would like to travel to Thailand but I have seen some videos in youtube where thai beats some tourists in different places in Thailand, it is true that if you have a problem with a thai, every other thai people beats you at the same time?
100% false - don't even thnk about that. We've spent at least 6 months in Thailand over the last 2-3 years and never once seen drama. If you drink and slop around at 3am then yeah, people will take advantange
Good COL vid. I'm thinking of moving myself there in late May to do the hand-to-hand combat education visa. It'll be a one year stay in CM so I think it'll be low season when I get there, and looking for a one year lease for an apartment, do you think I'll be able to find a nice apartment with good wi-fi and a washing machine for under $350-400 USD? I have a max budget of $1500 per month but would like to be able to save almost half or at least a third of that every month for future travel/trips/savings. I also like to take supplements for training so not sure the cost of that stuff in Thailand. Also, I'm not sure if I should bring my road bike. The traffic looks pretty dangerous. Would you advise against that? Any thoughts much appreciated.
You definitely can find them in that price range - the location likely won't be as good, but still walkable enough for sure, and you won't have the same 'newness' that our one did. But at the end of the day those are minor things! Lots of people on road bikes here, plenty to explore in the mountains. You'd be fine, traffic in CM can be a bit congested but the drivers are a sh*t load better there than Vietnam, Ph or Indo!
You can try and go down the non-tax resident route, but it's iffy and you won't get any tax benefits or right offs. We're registered NZ tax businesses.
We wish. We’re research nerds, most things we’ve learnt, tested, trialed and practiced ourselves... no one we can recommend other than reading and learning yourself sorry
Very decent video with realistic info, thank you! I prefer cost of living video with normal living standard (similar to what regular people do at home) instead of very low budget or luxury.
We went looking for a bike yesterday and came across a hole in the wall scooter shop with the same name and a guy who spoke broken engrish. My wife and I looked at each other and we're like... Nah this can't be the place D&S suggested!
The place you mentioned is on Nimman Rd or Nopparat? I googled it and it took me to their website catmotors.net/contact/ which is indeed the hole in the wall on Nopparat that I had visited. But from your video the office entrance is different so I must be going to the wrong place:-(
LTE is the real winner, you can get 10-20mb down quite frequently and it's cheap, $10 or so for data plans. Wifi can vary, most places only around 2mb down. We're back in Bali now and will be sharing videos covering scooters, data plans, food costs etc.
great vlog guys! 😀 Greetings from an Aussie in Germany 🇩 🇪 interested how much you guys spent in Berlin. P.s every where is cheaper than Nz except the scandanavian Countries! 😉 happy travels!
Thanks Paul - appreciate you having our back! Just trying to add some value, but not everyone sees it that way - water off a ducks back though! Comments like yours are what keep us going, so thank you.
This guys prices seem ok for Nimman area, which is the most costly area in Chiang mai, the average long term resident like myself, steer well clear of that area. rents, Food, Coffee, clothes, groceries all expensive there. Many foreigners live in that area, so things are geared for them, to embrace real Thai culture, Nimman area is not for you. I live about 18 kilometres away from Nimman and my costs are a fraction of what Daneger spends, we see trees, hills, lakes, and is not a concrete jungle like nimman, the crime rate in Nimman is much higher too
This guys response is accurate. Those of us only staying for a month or two prefer location, ease, access and walkability before we move off to a new country..... 😜 Thanks for the comment, Rob. Glad to hear you've immersed fully into the culture.
That would be a healthy amount to keep you safe and happy with insurance and runs, yes. You might not need to pay the extra for the apartment though - we were happy with the higher price because of proximity and 2 working spaces. You guys could very easily pay $500 per month for your accom and be happy.
These wrap up videos are so helpful !!! My family and I are planning a vacation to Thailand in the summer and at the moment flights from Vancouver are $1,200 RT 😲 so it's interesting to see how we can save while we're there.
Yup! The designs are all unisex :) Stace rolls the sleeves on her one to style it up more haha. There's one other design as well which is 'Free As F*ck' that we quite like!

Thanks for sharing experience , it’s very surprising how cheap the cost of living in Chiang Mai
The strong baht raises your actual cost by 5000 plus per month or more unless you earn Thai baht each month
Thanks Tom - havent been back to Thailand since, so havent been monitoring the rates
Oh, we miss Chiang Mai, one of our favorite cities in Thailand!😍
Not just Thailand though, right?! :P

$700 for accomodation for a month is amazing. Thank you for giving us this information and I hope Stacey is doing well now.

Good feedback, thanks Ben! We cover bits of that over our day-to-day vids, but there could be some good use in this vid as well
I have watched both video's Chiang Mai and the Philippine's of the two which one is most livable as well as affordable in your opinion?
Chiang Mai for sure, super easy, better food, easy groceries, dont need a scooter, less tourists, more relaxed, less hustle.... but the beaches in the PH are amazing!

Probably the best video about Chiang Mai. Thank you!!
Cheers! 🤙🏼
Thanks so much guys, this def gives me a clearer perspective when I move! Happy coming from Canada!

Thanks for sharing..great. May I know which cam u are recording with? any other quiet area u may recommend to stay after yr months exploring? haha
Thanks! All our equipment is here: danegerandstacey.com/our-equipment/ We love Chiang Mai and Bali is epic as well!
Thanks for the list. Did yr apartment offer weekly rental? any other nicer apartmt u may recommend as same budget?
No weekly rental, only monthly. Theres actually heaps of other spots for half of what we paid, but our place was prime location and brand new!
Great Video Dan!
Thanks so much!
Ok, thanks. I will never be able to go there but I enjoy your videos very much. Good camera usage.
Again, great video. Thanks, guys. Are you planning on a fully developed website - only ask because I was thinking of buying a t-shirt with your logo.
Hey Mark - yeah the site will house our book, some new merch (including t-shirts with logos) and more info about us etc. It's a full site!
Thanks for the info especially about the hospital experience! I have a young child and healthcare is a biggie when researching possible destinations 👍
Definitely consider CM then, amazing healthcare setup and going via insurance was super easy as well!
I like to open food bussiness in pai or chiang Mai? Which one you think better ,? Thanks your videos really good appreciate
It's all about location in either place. If you're in a main area youll be fine
Great video! glad you recommended it :)
Look forward to seeing the Bali video.
Thanks again! Digging your comments :)
Hi Daneger/Stacey,
Thank you for your video. Very useful info!!
At your ages, what visa type allows you guys to live in Thailand permanently?
Thanks
You're welcome. Dont think there is a visa that would get you permanent sorry, best you can do is about 90 days in a row

I get 983USD a month on SSI. I wouldn't even go there on that. I am saving for vacation there.

Great videos guys, and thanks for "finally" mentioning the WIFI speeds... that is important...
Perfect timing - just finished filming our first European cost of living from Krakow! Alllmost forgot to include speeds again :)

Happy to have shared it with you - thanks!
What is the ease with the visa experience for living for 6 months in CM?
