This is a cover of the Eddie Floyd song from 1966. I never knew it was a cover because I was only three years old in 1966 and I was a teenager by the time the cover was made.
You have to listen to the original by Eddie Floyd (especially Live in London) to really appreciate what she did with this song. Nevertheless, I feel the song belongs to Eddie Floyd, who recorded for the same (Mempphis) company as Otis Redding and also had a hit with "I've Never Found A Girl (To Love Me Like You Do)" and a remake of Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home To Me".
You are right! I was born in 1956. We did not realize how fortunate we were to be born when popular music was so diverse, of great quality, and a lot of it. And I had siblings older than me so I benefited by hearing what they played before I was really "tuned in" to the music scene. And I had parents that loved their generation's popular music so I heard what they liked as well. All of this truly expanded my musical knowledge and experiences. We thought it would last forever, that this was the way it always was going to be. Now I realize how lucky we were to be around during this magical era of musical breadth and depth. Due to living through decades with wonderful music, my playlists are large and go across multiple genres. The O'Jays said it best; "I love music! And if you want any disco recommendations, I have plenty, along with over a thousand R&B/Soul songs that are all treasures. Check out Ruby Johnson and her song Weak Spot. Check out Clarence Murray and his song Let's Get On With It, and Gwen McCrae and her song Lead Me On. And of course, Etta James and her song Security. These are colossal bangers! So many.... Enjoy
