- If you follow my RISDIPLAM Journey you will know I have Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) - a rare, genetically inherited neuromuscular condition. It causes progressive muscle weakness and loss of movement due to muscle wasting (atrophy).
There are different forms of SMA and a wide spectrum of how severely children and adults are affected. I have type 2.
Despite this I can drive an adapted vehicle. This is my 4th car in 20 years driving and is adapted by Lewis Reed and Steering Developments.
As far as I am aware it is the only Drive from Wheelchair V-Class in the UK. It has all the Mercedes top end features and joystick steering for me, a wheelchair user.
The hand controls are PARAVAN's Space Drive System. I drive from my Permobil F5 using Permalock tie down.

Thanks for this video! Very informative!!
Lovely video and commentary Ross. I have a DFW also mine is a VW Not Space drive. Think you are incredible. Wishing you safe driving. All the best.
Thank you kindly
Been to Liverpool in this with Ross driving, and it’s a smooth ride as a passenger and very roomy.
Great Video, really informative. Hope you are keeping well Ross.
Thanks. All good.
Hope you are well too
Thanks very much for the video
Thank you
Thank you for explaining. Very good job. Hello from the USA🇺🇸👍🙋♂️
Cheers
@@thesmartchap 👍👋
Nice motor, I’ve have a Peugeot Rifter with spacedrive 2 and same controls as yourself; wouldn’t be without it. Had a VW Caddy before.
Thanks mate. I love my car. It’s a beast!!
Awesome 😎
for sure
Thx man !
Thank you
great video , I drove for 10 years before the power chair came along and have just asked to be referred to a test centre to start exploring an adapted drive from vehicle.
I'm quite tall though so not sure that the lewis reed conversion would work , looks great though. My fear was always that going over bumps and the sensitivity of the steering could be a bit dangerous
I’m much weaker than you so you can definitely drive. You’ll be surprised at vehicle options.
@@HighTen_Melanie they can do all sorts of things. I’ve seen a Mercedes with a slightly adapted roof for a tall person.
@@HighTen_Melanie I’d talk to Lewis Reed for the base vehicle. Darren there is very innovative. Then Steering Developments for the controls.
Nice job mate
Thanks 👍
No probs Ross ❤
Hi Ross I'm a C7 complete SCI my current vehicle is a Kia Carnival LWB 2.9 TDI, this vehicle had the floor lowered,
ramp & lowering suspension carried out by Kivi in Italy then shipped to NZ for final fit out to enable me to
drive from my power chair (Permobil F5) having traveled 160,000 km it is due for replacement.
I currently have a VW Caravelle Executive 204ps being modified by GM Coachworks in Newton Abbot.
They lower the floor, reinstal the front seats on re-engineered seat bases and an AMF K90 under floor lift.
On completion the van will be shipped to NZ for final fit out of hand controls power chair docking (Dahl) hopefully
should be all set for Christmas 2021.
Hope you are well and kind regards
from New Zealand.
Hi,sounds like a nice vehicle. I have same lift and conversion. My vehicle is being repaired after a big crash.
@@thesmartchap Thanks for replying, hope you didn't suffer too serious injuries.
I'm only guilty of scratching my Kia while it was in my garage I had built for it down
the left hand side as room is tight in places (I surround the vehicle with too many of
my acquisitions) and when the Permobil F5 is reversed the rear carsters turn quickly
and forced the rear end in too close couldn't move it in any direction with out causing
more damage than I already had. Most is slowly being polished out.
All the best from NZ and hope you have your vehicle back soon.
Lovely car and best of luck. Can I ask if the underfloor lift catches on the ground? And for parallel parking is the lift too low to get out first on footpaths
Thanks.
Very rarely. In 5 years I’ve scraped I hide speed bump once.
It has air suspension so when parallel parking I raise the height up. Same applies for speed bumps. I can raise suspension.
Great video Ross!! This is just what I’m aiming for!! Did you get this through Motabilty……?? Or am I living in a different world of hope!! (Hope you don’t mind me asking). Thanks!
Thank you - my funding package is a bit unique and complicated - not too sure what Motability are funding currently.
@@thesmartchap to be honest I’m not sure what Motabilty will fund and how my PHB might tie in! I’ll look at it more closely but your video is really helpful. Thanks.
@@Porshesmiles message me on FB or similar and I can chat a bit more.
@@thesmartchap thanks … will do 😃👍
Hi from Paris,
Thanks for sharing your experience, is it possible to use the Park Assist with this adaptation ?
Thanks you
No afraid not
Hello, your video is great, what model is your car?
Thanks, Mercedes V Class
Hi are you concerned regarding the hight off side lift from the ground have you and can you operate ramp manually take care andy
Hi Andrew I have no concerns regarding the lift, although following a recent accident my overall confidence is less currently reverse now as I said yeah that's smashing my head is better than front of my head should a lift fail. LOL. There is a emergency hand pump for you to operate the lift manually.
I would like to know the type and manufacturer of your under vehicle lift and if you have enough ground clearance after fitting.
Thanks in advance and take care.
Hi, yes I have had no issues, speed bumps usually ok but I drive with care. The lift I think is www.amf-bruns-mobility.com/products/lift-systems/k70/ I believe
Cheers from Brazil, I have a F5 too, do u know your and internal van´s height?
Standard Mercedes height.
Were in the uk are you based as would be good to see this setup

Hi I have sma type3 and in the prosses of getting a licence could you tell me what adoption you have and does your vehicle come under a van or a car I live in hull
Hi. It’s a car. It uses space drive. Hope this helps
How much this changes costs?
can you have this with push and pull hand controls
I think you can have most controls on most cars. Just need a good converter
❤😊
hi, i need some information... i have the same car and the same wheelchair. But i can't enter in the door, because the height is 120 cm. How did you solved this problem?
There is a lift under vehicle.
@@thesmartchap Obviously I see the lift, I also have a lift. From the video I think you have changed the floor of your vehicle, am I wrong? What is the height between the floor and the roof to enter?
@@MBdip90 right sorry. Lewis Reed converted the floor from front to back
@@MBdip90 no extra height. I’m quite short.
I’m 21 got duchenne muscular dystrophy and interested in driving how do I get started if I wanted to drive and see if I would be able to drive?
Hi. Are you in the UK?
@@thesmartchap yeah
@@AaronGGAMING ok so first port of call is to contact Motability and they do a driving assessment to identify your ability and adaptations required. Then you can apply for a grant or buy your own vehicle and adapt it.
@@thesmartchap thanks

Hi I don’t mean to get in your business but I been looking to drive with something like this do you know about how much this would cost in usd or just what it costed you in your currency
Hi. This merc base model at the time was £45k GBP
The adaptations cost circa £125k GBP.
Car is insured for £184k GBP
Car is currently smashed up
Thank you what is just the hand controls sorry I wasn’t very clear.
@@jacobfulltv space drive is around £30k per input device. So like £60k to brake / gas and steer.
@@thesmartchap thank you so much for your time .
Hope you’re ok. How did u smash it?
I’m c4/5 sci and hopefully going to learn soon, I’m going for a medical assessment on 12th of march 🤞. I really liked the video and the van. I’ve a transporter atm bit tight for head room. ( front seat passenger)
Hi, my name is Rodrigo and I've been quadriplegic for 11 years, I'm poor and I live in Brazil, I need one of these. give me one please!!!
Sorry I wish I could help.
Why can't we get this mod for a Metris in the US?
Contact Braun?
@@thesmartchap As far as I am aware, Braun’s UVL won’t fit a Metris in the US.
@@altondelane7798 what’s a metris
@@thesmartchap The Mercedes Metris is the US version of the Mercedes V-class or Vito model
@@altondelane7798 they look terrible compared to European model. But you can order a wav in USA

Afraid it’s the one thing that doesn’t work.
And that is really too bad...
