  • Full review and overview of the Samsung Sound+ hw-ms650 soundbar.
    These are my personal and honest impressions (review) of the Samsung MS650 All in One Smart Sound bar. It is not meant to be a technical analysis but a look for the average joe consumer point of view.
    This is the little brother to the Samsung MS750 and big brother to the Samsung ms550. On paper it offers the best value unless you want to pay £300 more for basically two upwards firing drivers.
    I bought the ms550 and did not like that one at all. I was hoping the Samsung ms650 would be more balanced with the mids that were missing from the ms550. I was pleased to find it was a big improvement on my ms550.
    If you can spare 30 minutes I will take you thought all my thoughts and show you all aspects of the 650. If you dont have that time to spare I sum up my opinions in the first 4 minutes :)
    Full Samsung Soundbar review and tests.
    btw this review also applies to the ms6500 which is the curved black version of the sound bar, the ms651 which is the silver straight samsung soundbar, the ms6501 which is the curved silver version of the sound+ soundbar.

    Hi Alan- firstly- wow what a fantastic presentation and review! I have been struggling to find a decent review for this soundbar for ages and you have put together one of the best and most comprehensive reviews for any product I have ever read. I bought this soundbar a few weeks ago on sale for 399 euros and am quite happy with it although, as you mentioned, like nearly every soundbar, it does not provide a truly enveloping 360 degree surround experience. What it does do tho it does incredibly well- and for the price I guess it should do that. I had a few remaining unanswered questions I'll ask in another post. Again- congratulations and thank you for such an amazing review of this product!

    Hi, what Samsung subwoofer is compatible with this sound bar MS650?

  • @macmusica
    @macmusica 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I got one today and had it in front of the TV feet as designed (it doesn't fit over them on my 8500 model). The sound was BASS light so I placed it under the cabinet which has room for thus it made the BASS connect best with my wooden floor. It was better but then I found 2 settings in TV Sound which changed it lots. Select HTS not PCM and LINE not RF and these totally opened up all the BASS to sound like a SUB was in it!!!
    I used the Optical Cable rather than WiFi to TV as that's better for timing. I then altered the Delay Time to 0 due to this and it synced perfect ;) I am now going for the 9000S WiFi Rear Speakers too! It really does not need the SUB if it's on your floor. I don't even need the BASS LEVEL above 0 either to get all it needs for music.
    Plus making the above Settiings vastly made it louder and this is really LOUD with no distortion! Regular TV watching is ample at 32/100.

    It does have night mode as such......its called DRC (Dynamic Range Control)
    Lets you apply dynamic range control to Dolby Digital tracks. If you press and hold the
    SOUND MODE button while in standby mode, DRC (Dynamic Range Control) turns on
    or off. With the DRC turned on, loud sound is reduced. That way it allows me to have great full sounds including Bass at low volume, while family is sleeping.

    Hi Alan, thank for your clear and deep review of this soundbar. I've been looking for many soundbar from all the available brands, mostly with external sub, but none of those convinced me 100% for different reasons and specs. Then I discovered this one and among all of them, it's the one that better convince me over all the others I found. I would like to buy it to replace my 10 years old Harman/Kardon HS200 2.1 system, want something more compact with no floor stand speakers but without giving up on quality. The thing that worry me is the low freq: my Harman has a 10 inches external wall-shaking sub but sometimes it's really too much, even if you lower it from it's own knob. On the most frantic, chaotic and noisy action movie scenes, I have to lower down all the system from the remote because all that bass is quite annoying to ears but this translate into a "dirty", muffled, too "mixed in" dialogue during those scenes, with some difficult on understanding some words due to bass prevailing on all audio spectrum. So now my question is: does the soundbar has enough bass to give dynamic and enhance action-packed scenes without being too overwhelming and create a pleasant atmosphere during quieter scenes (like cinema, where the bass is always present but never prevail) or anyway will I miss my 10" sub ? Hope I explained well, thank you !

    • @alanrossreviews
      @alanrossreviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      as you are sued to a sub you may find deep bass missing. However it does have a huge punch for what it is, enough for you to feel and enough to be overwhelming in a smallish room. So yes for a soundbar without a separate sub this does a good job and does have some lower bass. The fact that you have a dedicated center speaker means you wont lose dialogue in dedicated surround tracks. Also maybe consider the yamaha yas 107 and add your own say 8 inch sub to that. Its a route i ended up going. However the ms650 is a better soundbar hands down, you just have less option to tailor that bass because you can only add the samsungs own wireess sub if you wanted. Although sounds like huge bass slam isnt what you actually want.

    • @PassionMetallica
      @PassionMetallica 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for your fast reply. I like bass and deepness in sound but not when it's too much to overwhelm and cover other freqs and dialogues. I was considering Yamaha Yas 207 but is has a well known issue with the external sub crossover that cuts at 180 Hz making deeper dialogue and male voices "bounce" in alternante from soundbar to sub, to sub from soundbar and so on depending on the freqs, giving an uncomfortable feeling of course. Another question is, and that's my last: is Surround Mode, that has an own button, ANOTHER sound mode, independent from others or can it be added, "paired" with Standard, Music, Clear Voice ? For example, if I'm using Standard mode (you mentioned it's the best), can I turn on Surround Mode to work together ? Or is Surround Mode excluding and turning off all the others ? I'm asking because you talked about Standard Surround

    • @alanrossreviews
      @alanrossreviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i was was saying the 107 not 207, adding your own sub avoids that issue. The surround button turns on processing for adding extra depth and dimension. The standard setting in the mode selection is the only mode giving the original track with no extra processing.

    Great job on the review Alan. Appreciate it.
    I just got the ms750 (which is identical to the ms650 except for 2 top firing speakers) after trying out the Samsung q70 and for me the 750 blows it away. To the point, the Q70 sounded like walkie talkies by comparison. Willing to forgo the lack of punch from the sub. However, going from a 7.2 to this is kind of leaving me wanting just a little more thump. I am using it in my trailer eventually so space is a premium. Samsung told me that I could only use their $500 sub with the 750. To much $ and way too big for me. Then I saw your remark about kanto sub you used on the ms650. May I ask.... how you used the kanto with the ms750?

    Thanks so much Alan.... awesome job on the review! I just yesterday purchased a MS650 and your review has definitely clarified a lot of the questions I had regarding sound settings etc. I too have ended up feeling that Standard mode is my preference for most sources. I still remain a bit confused at to what the difference between Standard and Surround plus Standard is. In the straight Standard mode, when a 5.1 source signal is being played, is it then decoded to 3.1, or does it revert to stereo output? Would I need to have surround and Standard on to get a 3.1 output? Thanks again for this very detailed, thorough and easy to understand review!

    • @alanrossreviews
      @alanrossreviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. so there is no surround plus standard. This got me to at first. The surround button is another sound mode just like those actually listed under sound modes. This is why you can never have that plus one of the sound modes as they are all different modes. If you are in standard mode and hit surround you will see it is actually off. So it seems the surround button mode simply uses all 9 speakers to maximise the feeling of depth and space. Standard mode unlike all other modes does no extra processing. It plays the track exactly as it was encoded. So for example a 5.1 track now becomes 3.0. But if the track was straight stereo 2.0, it would remain as such and the centre speaker is unused, thats my understanding anyway. however you look at it standard has the least processing of all the modes. In surround mode a 2.0 track is still played using all speakers including the centre. You might think this would be best, but of course it is also un-natural on terms of the original track. perosnally i always ended up hearing this processing rather than just listening to the tracks.
      Now of course this is a 3.0 speaker. if you add the sub it then becomes 3.1. So a 5.1 will become a 3.0, not 3.1, in standard mode. The point also is that no other processing will go on. In surround the soundbar will try to improve on the original recording by trying to improve depth and space that were not in the original recording.
      Hope that makes sense :)

  • @blurayffan66
    @blurayffan66 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    1. On the soundbar there appears to be 3 small tweeters and 6 oblong larger drivers- in Surround+Standard mode in 3.0 (left,right,center) which exact speakers are handling the dialog (voices) only? 2. By adding the optional wireless subwoofer, are more drivers/tweeters then used to handle the dialog on the actual soundbar while the bass and low end is redirected to the sub- thus improving the quality of voices/dialog thru the soundbar?...in other words, if the MS650 is paired with the sub, what are Samsung doing?....are they crossing over the bass from the built in drivers on the soundbar to the subwoofer or do they all play in unison? 3. On the right hand side just above the display there is a small led light- and there appears to be one on the left hand side too- but the one on the left never light up on my soundbar- what is it for?

    • @alanrossreviews
      @alanrossreviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      my understanding is that in standard mode it produces the exact original track. So if the original track is say 5.1 then it becomes 3.0 with only the center tweeter and woofers used for speech. In all other modes they use their own processing using all speakers to produce the desired result, with only standard remaining true to the original track. If you add the sub it is rated at 27Hz~120Hz. I can only presume everything below 120hz gets handed to the subwoofer, 120hz-600hz to the sounbar woofers and 600-20000hz to the tweeters. Good question though. i dont have the soundbar with me right now so i will have to get back to you re the leds.

    • @blurayffan66
      @blurayffan66 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Alan for the detailed reply- really appreciate that. I asked the question re the sub as I don't really need more bass, but by adding the sub if it would improve the voices/dialog coming from the soundbar, I may consider adding the sub later (if it drops in price!). The dialog is already better than most soundbars but I have found it a little muffled and hard to hear on 1 or 2 movies- most are fine tho. Might be just my ears or my particular room set up, but I find the Smart mode best for movie watching- I rarely play it louder than '14' setting tho which may explain it.

    • @alanrossreviews
      @alanrossreviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i guess its possible, the soundbar woofers will be handling the lower range of speech without having to go below 120hz so in theory it should improve it, but enough to notice? enough to warrant that extra £500?? maybe try the av forums where someone is bound to have that setup. Seems to me smart mode makes it more dynamic, goes louder, but i found speech easiest to hear on standard with treble at +6. We all have different ears though, the funny thing is neither of us picked clear voice for better speech. :)

      I'll try your recommended settings again of Surround and Standard with Treble set at +6 (missed the treble part) and see how i get on. Yes, I don't really want to drop money on the subwoofer- I think spending that kind of money, regardless of how good the sub is, doesn't really make sense as we are into separate a/v receiver + 5.1 speaker price territory then.

On mine, in standard mode, the one in the middle is completely off/disabled, no sound, but in surround mode its in use. Is it supposed to be disabled in standard mode? the answer is how far you gonna go with the system. if you intend to add nothing afterwards the ms650 is the best option (the ms750 even nicer). if you are just adding a subwoofer the yas 107 allow you to add any sub whereas the ms650 needs the wireless samsung sub. but you also have the option of wireless rear subs for the samsung. so if you will add just a sub the yas 107 allows the best upgrade path. but only under those circumstances 👍😜

    Fantastic review - thank you. If I’m listening through Bluetooth am I just getting stereo or can I still get all 3 channels?
